View Full Version : I did it! I finally...d'oh!!!

Well, I finally did it. I got to scan in some of my line work! I've wanted to do this for a loooong time, but never had a scaner, or wanted to spend the money on one. Anywho, I also happened to aquier Photoshop 5 and I thought to myself, "Hey, I can try to color in the stuff myself. How hard can it be?"

After spending a bit of time cleaning up the line art (it was my first time using a scaner, give me a brake! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif) it suddenly hit me...I have no clue what-so-ever on how to use photoshop!

Anywho, long story short (hmm...a bit too late for that...) dose anyone know of a place that can give me a good tutorial of photoshop that's quick and easy to understand?

The disgruntled artist,

Photoshop is one of those complex programs that the only way you can really figure out is by playing around with it.

So until you get it figured out, you are gonna post the pencil pics, right?

Photoshop isn't very complex... There's a little bit of its behavior that needs to be learned, but it's really no harder to use than MS Paint... Just pick a tool, pick a color, and jump at it... My tip for anyone just getting into Photoshop, is to learn to deal with layers quickly. By doing all your coloring on a layer over the original line drawing, you can easily go back and fix something if you messed up-- mostly because you didn't just paint over the line! Oh yeah, and for selecting an individual area within an outline... Use the Wand Selector tool... Oh yeah, and for that matter... When going to select an area... Make sure you hold the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys, one at a time, or several at once, just to see what they do!

O.o; Wow, Meira, you make it sound soooo...complicated! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif I've tried messing around with stuff, sure, I just don't know what I'm messing aruond with...

And as for postin' the pencil pics rbf, I'll see if I have the time. They're none of my PSO pics, but that dosen't really matter. I'll try and scan those in later. Keep in mind this is all new to me, and I'm really busy, and I need a place to host my pics, with is also something I haven't done yet...

Everyone says geocities sucks but make a free account there and upload the pics. Then all you have to do is change the image tag (IE .jpg, .png, .gif...) to .txt and you can link to them. If you don't feel like setting up an account you could send them to me ([email protected]) but I am sure other people would be willing to upload them, too.

Happy birthday, Moo2u. (going by your title as of this moment. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif ).

Anyway, you can also host images at homestead.com, which is what I do. The free account gives you 8mb of space, and it's pretty easy to use.

As for the Photoshop tutorial, if you're going for the usual 'anime' cg look, you can try various art sites, such as polykarbon.com and the tutorial at howtodrawmanga.com. However, I felt that it's good to just sit and experiment with it, and see what looks best with your personal style.

Hope to see your drawings soon! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I use Photoshop and i'd have to agree that it is a fairly simple program.. if i'm not mistaken- doesn't it have a tutorial within it? but anyway- the BEST way to learn is to f*ck around with things.. i've been usin photoshop for years and have made many things that i am proud of.. its a good tool and i wish you luck in figuring it out.. my photo sig was done in paintshop, and in this one particularly- i colored the girl in.. in fact i took an anime girl that was completely different.. brown hair- and an entirely different wardrobe and using photoshop transformed her into my PSO character Starla and then extracted her and put her in front of a background i had previousely made- whatcha guys think of her?

photoshop is definately a good program. If you want some tutorials on image editing, try polykarbon.com BUT you must have some skill in at first and atleast be familiar with the tools. But most important thing is to learn layering and cutting out images. Other things come in time once those things are learned. Other tools like everyone else said are pretty trivial, such as blend, burn, etc. Tools like magic wand are extremely useful. If you search the internet for photoshop tutorials you are pretty likely to find some.

Well it's the first time I've seen your sig, I can say it's really nice:D. I guess mine lacks originality, did you draw the character yourself Starla?

Oops heh should have read your post again. You recolored it, still looks nice though XD

Well, after putting it off for months now, I finally got around to just playing around with Photoshop, like so many of you suggested. I used the two most simple drawing that I got the chance to scane. I set up a rushed tripod site (another new thing that I did, and this is impressive considering I'm scared of new things! o.O;;) and put up the only two pics I did.

http://moo2u3.tripod.com/pics/id1.html

So, considering it's my fist time using Photoshop, what do you think? Note that the first one isn't supposed to be that blurry, it just became that way when it loaded onto the site. I don't really want to spend the time to fix it. Lazy old me! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

And also, I haven't scaned any of my PSO pics yet because I'm using these pics (and more of my original character pics) in a project I'm working on, but some day they will come...

Nice work! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif I especially like the cute little furry guy, hehe.

What's the story behind these characters? Are they from the same body of work?

Moo2u
Oct 6, 2002, 07:26 PM
Yup, they're all from a story I've been working on for quite some time now. I just finished chapter seven of it (these take me a while cause they're like 30 pages for each chapter! o.O; ) I sent them out to most of my closest friends, and they seem to enjoy the story so far, so I'll probably continue writing it. I posted one chapter here once, but I never bothered posting more chapters after that. Man, I'm lazy!

I'm extremly busy (I'm trying out for a lead in a bordway production! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) but if I get the chance to color more pics (the more detailed onces) I'll say something. I'm just happy I understand Photoshop now! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
