i just want a sword that can cut my morning orange-slices. and cut pie.
so, if not, i can go as high as 65$.
so does anyone know where i could find one?
that has an actual grip, none of those kitchen-knife handles.
preferrably black.

I can just go down town to a shop that sells some really kewl looking swords, but that looks kewl too, hefty shippings cost though. Although, not suprising considering its a weapon.

You're not going to find anything battle ready (thats decent) under $500, so forget that silly fantasy if you have it.

A lot of show pieces are unsharpened and start to fall apart if you swing them at all, much less actually strike something with it. But are cheap as dirt.

Sharpened pieces that can serve more purposes than a hunk of steel on the wall are ranging more from. $100-200

So in other words, you get what you pay for. And you're not offering much.

Don't get in deeper than you can get out of, concerning eBay. (last second outbidders, non-shipping auctioners, scams, paypal only, etc.)

Also why not save up more money, for a better one?
You'll appreciate it more since you worked harder/waited longer to get it, and it should have enough quality to fit your uses for it. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Heh, while I was viewing it, the bidding ended. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif
Nobody purchased it. And they might have had a minimum bid amount for the item also, so if it wasn't met, then they don't have to ship it to the winner. :/

Honestly, its a live and learn type of thing.

Everyone has their own opinions on swords due to their own trial and error, and own research on prices/quality.

So do what you feel like, what'll make you happy.
We're just here to support either way.
Provide info/insight. Yeah?

-go google yourself some info about your choice of swords
-find the one you want from some site (again, google)
-find out how much it costs
-buy it, or save up for it

its.. not.. difficult..

My philosophy is to wait and see.

I've considered buying several CDs in the past, decided that it wasn't quite the right time, and, a month or two later, found them at super-clearance prices just by chance.

Swords... well... I've almost purchased quite a few cheap ones, but realized that I: 1. Have nowhere to put a sword 2. Will not use the poor thing at all.

when buying quality bladed weapons look for name brands like united cutlery, or kit rae. most cheapy replica swords are knock offs of respectable companies products

It doesn't have to be a million dollars for a sword you can use!

Under 200 dollars.
Fully sparrable.

Quit looking at movie swords. Those are useless.

YOu simply can't get a "battle ready" sword for under at least 200USD. Think about the cost of material to made said sword.

Battle ready would mean:
1. You can swing it, and it will resist the impact or the mere motion of swinging such a long thing around. That would mean the blade HAS to go into the handle. That means, more steel.

2. The blade can't be crap steel. Anything less than a 420 would mean that you can't sharpen it, if you do, it will go dull in a nano. Also, it has to be me quenched in a way that the steel will also resist impact.

Just these two things alone will cost at least 100 plus. Anything cheaper just isn't gonna happen.

And it is SPYDERFLY.
With a y. Where can you get it? Check with your stat government and see if it is legal to start with. Most of the time, it is illegal. Even if it is, if you have it with you, chances are it can get confescated.

<.<
Everything is technically called "carbon steel". That is too vague to tell whether or not it is good. I think your number one priority should be whether or not it is full tang if you only intend to swing it rather than trying cut stuff up.

And Zel, your friend make folded steel katana? How does he fold it?? What kind of steel does he use? How does he quench them? How does he harden them and at what temperature? How does he fold them and how he keep it from de-laminating?

And how much are we talking about?

Carbon steel is just a fancy way of saying, "steel with extra carbon". Most steel has carbon in it to prevent corrosion, increase strength, among other chemical reasons. Too much carbon makes the blade brittle and stiff. Too little and it becomes too maleable. It was added to blades to give them the strenth needed to take on modern warfare. Though, that was developed for knives and bayonets mind you.

The same can happen with improper mixtures of tin and iron, the two main components of steel. If you are really interrested in getting a good sword that you can even occasionally cut things with, I suggest you read up on swordmaking and the advantanges of various types of steel.

Carbon does not make the steel prevent corrosion. In fact, the higher the carbon content, the easier for it to corrode. Chromium is what adds the "stainless" quality to steel. It does make the blade strong, and actually retend its edge. Steel would have to has at least 0.50 carbon content for it to be a good steel for blades. But there is a combination of alloys that is also crucial to the steel. How it is quenched and how it is hardened also affect how good the blade steel is going to be. The same steel made by two different company can perform very differently.

So.
In short, all blade steels are supposingly "carbon steel". As I said, too vague.

Seriously, If you're not going to kill someone, don't get a real sword. If you just want to practice, get a bokken. You can get a nice oak one for 15 bucks.

And if you are going to kill someone, a gun is much more practical, albeit lacking in style. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif
