It helps me talk about crap not worthy of being talked about in real life! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Or just talk period.
See! *points down*

I read in the Hawaii newspaper today that we get at work that Adult Swim picked up "The Boondocks," a regular comic strip I read in the Sunday paper. I'm very curious as to how much like the comic it is when it gets turned into a 30 minute show.

It debuts October 2nd it says, and the TV schedule means the jokes will be a little delayed-by a few months. So their example was that the kids in the show can't make fun of "Being Bobby Brown's latest episode."

Shucks.

I'd wish you would record the poser mobile commercials, and make witty gifs of them.

Ouch, well that just goes to show you can't control other people.

And stop quoting me if you're not going to reply to anything in my quotes-which I took the time out to write out and try to make interesting.

They're going to make a Boondocks cartoon?

Eh, after the first month or so of initial shock, I realized the comic itself isn't particularly clever or funny, but maybe the show could be good?

Actually its one of the most rascist cartoons since the 1920's. But since its black people making the cracks its "okay". I dont get that http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

I agree that its not really funny or particularly witty. I have no idea how thats supposed to translate well to a show. Running a politically and racially driven show right next to something silly and insanely funny like Robot Chicken just doesnt seem quite right...

It's not racist or funny, but it is witty.

I'm sure that the creator of the Boondocks laughs at anyone that would bother taking offense to the comic. The Grandfather and the Nephew (little brother? The gangster one) are basically like Peter of family guy.

They say insulting things, but taking them seriously will only result in a tumor.

The comic isn't supposed to be racist, but not everyone can see through it. It's a witty comic hiding in a silly comic hiding in a prejudiced comic.

Actually, I don't think that it's really supposed to be all that funny. Peanuts has never made me laugh out loud, but I do enjoy reading it none-the-less. Hello people, stop being so brainwashed by popular media.

My mom met Aaron Mcgruder, the creator of the comic. She said he was nice. Its funny to me but the only thing i don't like is the use of the "N" word.

But PSOW also helps me to type.http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I wont pretend to be so smart as to get all parodies out there, so I'll just assume that The Boondocks particular variety is lost on me and not stoop to saying it sucks or whatnot.
All I can say is that, to me, it does seem to play the race card quite a bit, and the delivery isnt very good at making sure you get that the race card IS part of the parody. But thats just me.

Yeaaaah... that's a problem. I'm not even entirely sure that it is a parody, lol.

I should have taken the newspaper home today to quote more from it. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

The article ends by the creator(Aaron McGruder, as Infinity said above) saying he felt like he won the lottery saying he felt like he made it, "White people payed for my show."

It was first shown to Fox, and they wanted to make it another Family Guy, otherwise it would have been too harsh even for Fox. He then showed it to Adult Swim/Cartoon Network after Fox told him it was too much for network TV and cable TV would be a better fit. They agreed to air it, but told him to "not make it another Family Guy."

I find that funny since they're soon going to be showing South Park on UPN(a bad move, I think if there ever was one).

They went on about the creator of Adult Swim, Harvey Birdman's show being comprised of old Hanna Barbera cartoons that Cartoon network was showing for years and years. They never wanted to do any new shows and suddenly they gave permission to create new shows. The first of which was Space Ghost Coast to Coast. the rest came from there after more people tuned in to watch this 15 minute show.

Sometimes in the cartoon there are jokes concerning "white people." Other times its just like any other comic(grandfather asks his grandson to come over, its very important, then says to change the channel on the TV and the kid had just come out of the shower and gets upset).

It has jokes about current events and new technology pertaining to suburban life. Jokes about MTV along with jokes about the president.

I enjoy it and I do agree that it isn't for everybody. Not everyone wants to see a cynical-"wise beyond his years" African American kid making fun of popular culture/political events, but the comic's creator has an audience, plenty of ideas, and will continue to make more of these comics.

I hope people are not too swayed by it using race as a reference for some jokes, then pass it off as a racist cartoon. It will surely spark some emotional outbursts and heated discussions/debates when it airs in October, just over little things like this.

First of all....How the hell did this get to the boondocks. Lol, I'm joking, hey, really, i am joking. Why yall looking at me like that? Don't hurt me >.<

My mom said based off that lil convosertation she and Aaron Mcgruder(the creator of Boondocks)had, she said hes one of those guys that'll purposely put certain things out just so controversy can get started and actually enjoy it. She also told me hes really nice.

She told Aaron, her son(me) wanted to make comics and he said "Thats nice. Tell him to keep at it and one day, he may just get famous"

I think she met him in Atlanta Georgia on her vacation. I need to ask her again.

I like "The Boondocks". Sure, it's not always lol-worthly, but I find it an enjoyable read nonetheless. And I read the comics every day, so I am appointing myself expert. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Now, if you want to discuss horrible comics, let's talk "Mutts" or "Dick Tracy". http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

Nah, Mutts is silly enough to work sometimes. B.C., I'm sorry to say, is pretty much the opposite of Doonesbury. Hear no one complaining about B.C., but make fun of Bush, and WOAH, back off mister.

B.C.? Never heard of it. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_cry.gif
Our "Doonesbury-counterbalance" is Prickly City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prickly_City). I find it generally more annoying than Doonesbury or other "political" comics, as that's basically all it ever covers. At least Doonesbury has some variety!

Prickly City just seems... wrong.

BC is basically a comic featuring cavemen trying to figure things out. However, it is written by a man that doesn't believe in evolution. Go figure.

Never heard of this prickly thing, but B.C. is okay. Everyonce in a while its really good and otherwise its pretty average, yeah its "christian" but most strips deal more with literary or sight gags, than any religious agenda. And it never throws barbs at any other religion.

My favorite social paradies (comic wise) would have to be OPUS and Non Sequiter. I'm just glad Non finally finished that damn Ordinary Basil story arc GAWD that was boring!!

Doonsbury comes off as too bitter these days, if you read his early stuff you can see a huge difference, and that was during 'Nam.

Solstis
Aug 13, 2005, 01:20 PM
I'll agree with you about Non (especially that Basil part, eurgh), but I dislike Opus.

Tries too hard to be obviously trying too hard, or something.

Freud? Geeze, I said Opus twice.

Ooooh I love Non-Sequitor to bits! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/heartcookie.gif Gotta be one of my favorites. But, yeah, I gotta admit that "ordinary Basil" was not nearly as amusing as the usual strips. I am, however, a big fan of Pierre of the North. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Opus does nothing for me; I hate the characters, for one, and as Solstis said, it seems to "try too hard". Thank god the Trib only runs it on Sundays. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

And about OPUS, its an aquired taste. And I admit the new characters arnt quite as strong as the ones in the original strip Outlands. I miss the subliminal messeging cockroaches and the Mickey Mouse bum.
