my mom's suddenly against my getting a sword, and now i have to convince all of my extended family that it is not a bad idea, and im about halfway through the people who mom actually respects the opinion of.

If it's this big a problem, why don't you wait until you're older to get one so you won't have to worry about your parents bugging you? Not to mention you'll be able to afford a better one by then.
