The phrase "riding shotgun" was originated in the time period where horse-drawn wagons were used as a main form of transportation. For security, there was someone sitting next to the driver holding a shotgun. This is to stop thieves, marauders, etc.
Rules for Riding Shotgun
1. If you call shotgun, you are in sole possession of the shotgun seat, and nobody else may take it. ("Nobody" includes medical emergencies, and everything and everybody but you.) http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif
2. If two people call shotgun at the same time, they must:
A: Fight(Physically) over the seat while everyone else watches, places bets, etc. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif
B: Race for the seat, with the shotgun seat being the finish line, or...
C: Come to a diplomatic solution (This includes any nonviolent solution {besides racing}, such as Rock, Paper, Scissors.)
3. If you have the shotgun seat, you must expect and be willing to put up with harassment from the backseat. This includes:
A: Hair pulling
B: Pinching
C: Strangulation
D: Other stuff
4. If you are in possession of the shotgun seat, and you leave your seat for more than five(5) minutes, your shotgun call is void, and the seat is once again up for grabs.
5. A shotgun call from a 360+ pound linebacker overrides all other calls for the shotgun seat. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif
(I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, but what the heck, this is FKL. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif)
