Just some stuff to share. I'll add more later, as I don't feel like resizing the rest. I doubt a lot of you would want 1000x800 resolution images posted, especially since they're like, half a meg a piece. That'd do quite a number on my bandwidth to boot...

That top one of Ethen's head by itself makes him look Arabian. I also don't like the design of his hood when its up like it is but then again there concept sketches. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

To bad we can't see any other sketches on the "wall of phantasy" fame. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

I like how they dont just design a humanoid figure. They also draw on the same paper different details like a chest plate or a ring or something, just to get the details right, then, add it to the character. Usually, Ive seen completely separate drawings for that. Good way to make use of space & compare. You can tell the artists were working their butts off on this. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Alright, the secret is now out: you can find these in Takao Miyoshi's blog at SegaLink. You will need an ID if you plan to look at it. His entries are pretty much daily... for example, below is a resized version of his picture for today's entry. The original size is 1500x1024.

http://synbios.net/games/PSU/misc/4.jpg

Here's the rest of the conceptual art that he's posted up so far.

http://synbios.net/games/PSU/misc/6.jpg

http://synbios.net/games/PSU/misc/7.jpg

http://synbios.net/games/PSU/misc/8.jpg

The rest of what's up is primarily stuff we've seen before, artwork of the characters and so forth. If you're a collector like I am, you'll want to grab everything anyways.

Sorry Nites, no Karen artwork yet. I'm waiting for it myself. =P

Woah! Now that shot of the girl in the three monitors with the crowd standing around looks like something you'd expect in a comic strip! I hope they use that concept pic for something in the manual. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Hopefully we'll get to see some similer clothing styles from the original PS series like Alysa's hunter uniform (Alys from PSIV) in PSU even if it means being updated to look like futuristic clothing (with the glowing strips and markings,) I still say that allot of clothes from the original games was pretty good. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Lets just hope we won't see anything skimpy to almost to revealing like with Nei's clothing. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

Actually, in Japan, Alys was known as Leila. Alis (from PS1) was Alisa. Just thought Id clear that up. Guys, stop picking on Nei. Her outfit was not that skimpy. So what if it was a mini-skirt? Keep in mind, she was considered a monster & ran away. Rolf found her, took her in & saved her. Im sure he couldve gotten her more protective clothing. But, he doesnt look at her as a hottie. To him, Nei was always a younger sister & I doubt he'd let his sister out of the house in something REALLY revealing. I have younger sisters. I understand the protective instinct. Nei's outfit isnt that bad. She tended to carry herself very respectfully. Honestly, I paid more attention to Nei: the character, not Nei: the miniskirt. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

There are some really interesting things brought up by these pictures. For example, you know the circular things on Ethan's hoodie? Those are actually his nanotrancers. In some other sketches, they're referred to as "photon amplification units." Also, in one of the newman sketches, section IDs are mentioned. Well, specifically, "something like section IDs." Nothing is said about them being used for the same thing as they were in PSO, however. As far as clothing and accessories go, the designers seem to be putting lots of time into clothing line names and the like. For example, I recall Ethan's jacket being called "Solid Skin," while his pants are "Gothic Star." (I think. I can never seem to get a clear shot of the lettering on his pants leg, so I could be wrong on that one.) Anyway, another clothes line shown in one of the sketches is "Upperblow." "Metro" is the brand name of a "weapons transfer unit," which each character seems to have at their side. Below the Metro logo, this unit is referred to as "arms memory load.sys," so it's probably a nanotrancer for your weapons. And, finally, "Gale" is a brand of shoes, while it seems "BHU" or "bee hive unit" is a photon amp brand.

DizzyDi
Dec 23, 2005, 02:33 PM
The brand name thing brings up and interesting idea. What if they had like an Armored Core like thing goin on with clothes, weapons, and even cast parts? Like each brand name has its own ins and outs, if you get what I'm saying. Maybe you could even make your own brand name with PM-created items, -drool-.
I can't wait 'till we get some more info on this game.

PhruitBaskit
Dec 23, 2005, 02:51 PM
Wow, that's pretty cool. I guess I didn't think that those letters were actually for different brands. And their names aren't actually all that bad, so that's good. Very good; 'Solid Skin', 'Gothic Star', 'Upperblow', 'Metro', 'Gale', and 'Bee Hive Unit'. Those are all pretty cool. And it's nice that they have different brands for the same thing. Not just one brand that makes ALL the clothing. That would kind of suck. All the different brands I'm sure will make a lot more fun. Plus all the different logos they'll have. Kick ass! And it's cool that there aren't just brand names for clothing, but for photon amps too. That's awesome. Thx again Espio http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

If it was a miniskirt, it would have a skirt around her waist now wouldn't it. because it does not, I think we can call it a swimsuit or bathing suit. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

One slight correction I need to make concerning my previous post. It seems that Ethan's pants and jacket are both made by the same clothing company. Upon much closer inspection, it doesn't appear to be called "Gothic Star," but "Cubic Star," instead. (The lettering on his pants leg is so cramped together it makes it difficult to figure out what each letter is in such a stylized alphabet.) And "Solid Skin," I'm guessing, is maybe a style within that brand name. Anyway, two others to add to the growing list of names: RRI and ASFA. RRI comes from Dr. Dorson's lab coat, so it may actually be the name of the lab he's from. ASFA is from a screenshot in the recent official site update. They're listed under the name of a vest set Ethan is purchasing.

Well, to be nit-picky, Alis's name in Japan was Alissa. The cut an extra "S" off her name to save space on the cartridge. They spelled it out fully in the PS:Generation 1 remake though.

As for Nei - when Rolf found her she was still just a small child, and she was cloaked in robes and a scarf that her foster parents had given her before her home was burned down and she was chased out of town by an angry mob. Darum was about to kill her when Eusis (Rolf) stepped in and saved her. Noone dared harass him like they did her previous foster family - because he was an agent of Paseo.

So Nei's skimpy outfit (more like a leotard, than a mini-skirt) was something she picked up well after she met Rolf.

Here's a great scene from a PSII Manga comic that show's Rolf's reaction to Nei's outfit... (though it isn't 100% cannon to the storyline)

http://pscave.com/com/psfan/0128.jpghttp://pscave.com/com/psfan/0129.jpg

http://www.classicgaming.com/saturn/pso/Download_NeiKan.jpg
There's a picture of Nei as she was just prior to meeting up with Rolf. (From the translated version of the game Nei's Adventure)

As for the concept art, it's pretty cool looking. Makes me think that it's just about time for Sega to put out a 2006 edition of the Phantasy Star Compendium.

Regarding the blog, it seems there is a new pre-order item. There's a pricier version of the game that comes with a PSU T-shirt, alongside the soundtrack and artbook. They haven't come up with a T-shirt design yet.

The T-shirt can also be purchased as a seperate item. Purchases are made through Sega Direct.

Edit: Of note, Sega Direct doesn't ship internationally. Guess we miss out on the T-Shirt. Bleh.

It costs money, amusingly enough. 1 Yen = 1 point at SegaLink.

The PSU related items are free though. I went ahead and popped a few of them onto my avatar for kicks. I've got Ethan Waber's clothes, Karen Erra in the background, and Pete the PM floating alongside in a mag-like fashion. Such a silly website.

To be further nitpicky, Alys's name would be Laila or Lyla. (Or something with an R replacing one or both ls, since it can go either way, or something incredibly doofy but still valid.) For it to be Leila the Japanese would have to be spelled differently. Curse this board for not supporting Japanese characters! XO It's spelled RAIRA(ra, i, ra again) in katakana, it would need to be REIRA(re, i, ra) to work out to Leila.

Nei's outfit doesn't bug me nearly as much as Rika's, even though Rika is technically MORE clothed. I think it's the whole black leather dominatrix thing(Seed needed a woman, clearly, nevermind that he was a computer). That and the wondering about how the HELL she manages not to freeze to death on Dezolis in that getup.

I still maintain that Mirei looks like they slapped half a dress on Nei and renamed her, though. XP

We need more bishounen dress-wearing male newmans. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif So far Rutsu is the ONLY decent-looking male in the game. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif (And shouldn't he have blue hair? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif )

I could do without those stupid hats, though. Hopefully you can omit them when making an online character. I resented being stuck with two hairstyles for my FOmars because the rest all had really stupid hats(#...3? It's not shown on PSOW here, and I don't have my GC memory cards to boot up PSO and check, short with tiny stupid hat with antennae), or were spiky(#9), or the headgear wasn't stupid but the hairstyle itself was(#5, the circlet was fine but what the hell was with the frizzy wedge cut? I've never seen a man with a wedge cut). And then all the FOnewm hairstyles that didn't suck had really bad hats too... *weep*

One random thing I forgot to mention before. SonicTeam's going so far as to explain how your character is tracked on the game's map for the area you're in. In the picture with the female human next to the male human, the close-up of one of her arms mentions that the little circle decoration on her shoulder could actually be a GPS antenna used to show the character's location on the in-game map.

OdinTyler
Dec 23, 2005, 08:03 PM
Does this then mean you can track your offline AND online comrades during battle?

Parn
Dec 23, 2005, 08:09 PM
It's just some explanation for how things work in the game's universe. Unnecessary stuff that developers throw in when they love their job enough that they put that extra bit of polish to make things shine brighter than it normally would have. I'm the kind of gamer that eats that stuff up. End result: I'll be buying both the import and the domestic release in support of the game's huge development, among the soundtracks and other extra stuff related to the game that they'll sell.

Niki
Dec 23, 2005, 08:19 PM
I think these are actually droolworthy.

It's easy to see that SEGA is putting a lot of time and consideration into the gameworld, and for me this kind of depth is beyond welcome. i especially liked the monochrome images of the costumes for human and newman males and females. The bottom pic also seems to show the costume effects when elements are used, eh?

I don't think the GPS unit is so much going to keep track of your team-mates - but rather it's an explanation for the radar (the mini-map) you have up in the upper-right hand corner of the screen - just like PSO. Except, in PSO it wasn't given an explanation as to how it worked.

Usually the concept art looks WAY more kick ass than the actual in game art, probably due to the lack of graphical power. Might not be so bad this time though.

But I remember comparing PSO's HUmar's first hairstyle to the art. The in game hair looked terrible, like a bad haircut.

Without redownloading the videos, I'm not exactly sure which one it is. I know it is one of the videos from the 27th:

http://universe.nomaki.jp/live.htm

Just enter "psu" in the textfield at each of the download screens. Also, remember you can only download one file at a time. If you try to download multiple files, you'll get a 503 error.

I just looked over the file that I called "video6" and Maya's concept art does appear in it for a few seconds around the 3:40 mark.

I'll probably add some of these videos to PSOW's video section over the weekend.

So Karen's clothing is part of a line called Cubic Girls. And just like Ethan, her jacket uses the Solid Skin System. Oh, and one other random thing I noticed from one of the recent videos, the RRI on Dr. Dorson's lab coat actually is the lab name like I'd thought. It stands for Relics Research Institue. Also, concerning Dr. Dorson, some of you may recall seeing him referred to by Renvolt Magashi as "Dr. Daren." About that, his concept art shown in one of the streaming videos reveals his actual name. It's Ohwren Daren. (Not sure about the spelling of his first name, but it shouldn't be too far from that.)

That it does! XD

I agree with Parn; it's much easier to find specific guides in each section now with how you've organized everything.

Yea I've been meaning to try to get it a bit better. I've been having a slight problem with a few detail things but just not enough time lately to sit down and just do a whole mess of detail work. I really want put a gradient dispersal on the BG dragon but all my progs won't allow it ;_;

Yeah.. this is in response to something on the first page..

I agree - Nei's outfit isn't -that- skimpy. It just reminds me of older science fiction wardrobe and that makes it cool - it doesn't feel overly skimpy to me at all. It suits her - it's not like she's running around in a hot pink bikini or such.

*shrug*

Anyways - I like the new concept art. Thanks for sharing : )

FINALLY! Someone who agrees with me that Nei wasnt dressed like a slut or trashy. She was a hero & died as such. Shes also 1 of the most important chars in PS. She shouldnt be looked at as someone with neither fashion sense nor the morals of a streetwalker. She was...innocent, in a way. Besides, if you want to take up her choice in outfits, blame the designers. LOL

This is the cargo ship that Norphe pilots for Green Green Farm. The ship is described as being a Koltoba transport device. Other points of interest include showing how the lid and sides of the cargo ship lift up as well as mentioning that the length of the ship was designed with the topography of the area in mind. (Kind of obvious, though, I guess.)

Only for the purpose stated. I doubt this would be used for in-game travel, as it would probably be relatively slow and it would also be limited to flat areas due to how long it is. If it were to attempt to top a hill, it would more than likely get stuck. XD

That new picture just screams "I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL!" and I scream back "NOT IF I KILL YOU FIRST!"

But seriously, the D-Cell observation looks EXTREMELY accurate. Now we might start seeing some more connections between PSU and PSO (saying as how it is actually a "sequal" from what we have been told)

Well, it looks like the Google translation was off just a bit. Here's my translation of Takao's blog entry this pic was posted with.

Good evening, everyone! Today's illustration is of the very first enemy that Ethan encounters. This creature and others like it continually appear throughout the game, always getting in Ethan's way. Ethan ends up slashing this guy down with his saber.

PhruitBaskit
Jan 14, 2006, 11:39 AM
So that monster is basically a Booma, huh? I'll bet Ethan's Saber kills more than a few of those things LOL The first monster you encounter won't be too strong me thinks http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Go here:
http://www.pso-world.com/user.php?op=edituser

Scroll down until you see "Post Per Page on Forum." Change it to whatever number you like. After that, just click on the last page of the topic you want to read. Do not click on the "Full" link. Otherwise, you'll be presented with the entire topic.

To EspioKaos:
I was highly doubtful of Googble's translation. Thanks for the clarification. Was there any mention of this monster's name?

Well,
unless you can read those japanese characters, it shouldn't be a concern to you. While most browsers now prompt you whether or not to download a foreign language pack, I really don't recommend doing it.
Instead, try using Google Translate and enter the webpage's name and it should be able to translate most the JP characters into english.

And just to let you guys know, Takao's blog entry with the Vance doesn't mention anything new about it. Basically, it just says this is a monster spawned of SEED when it (they?) attacked the Guardians Colony. It attacks Ethan and his party with its enormous tentacles.
