PPL who play FFXI online mite know the answer to this; what do you need to bring a PS2 online? I've been looking arround and My Laptop probably isn't the right way to go with this game... Unless 1.6 Ghz and 512MB RAM can handle it (1GB RAM hopefully soon). (PS, to those who are getting the game on their PC, what ARE your specs for you PC?

Anyway, if I take the PS2 'path', what do I need Hardware wise? and is there a set price for using the PS2 online like XBOX?

Since its not gonna use the HDD all you'll need is a modem adapter unless u got the slim which comes with that

you need broadband, not dialup as i understand.

A usb keyboard.

Unless Sonic Team opts for headset support instead, then you'll probably need a headset as well.

This is the route I am taking, considering I have a Mac. I just hope this game works better then the other online PS2 titles I have tried. RE:Outbreak is the only one that I have found that works well at all....

Monster Hunter was a decent one..once you got past the area load times..ok maybe not..
But, as for Keyboards, I'm recommending the Sharkboard because I believe the Powerboard has discontinued and the Logitech keyboards are uncomfortably small.

K, then I'll probably just get my PS2 online then.

1. Online price was suggested as 10 for the 1st month & 8 or 9 thereafter. Not too bad. No word on forms of payment taken other than credit card.

2. For keyboards, you can use any USB kb. I use a nice Logitech one that was recommend for use with EQOA. Any one you come across will work fine tho.

3. If youve played PSO on a PC then you SHOULD be able to play PSU on your PC as well. Cant confirm that as I havent done much PSO PC playing.

Not neccessarily true. I used to play alot of blue burst, and I will definitely say that it is not the most graphically intensive game, nor anything near what PSU will look like. If you're playing PSO:BB on minimum or medium I'm gonna guess that you're gonna be chugging with PSU.

The specs on my machine have changed...

Antec Truepower 480W Power Supply
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 Dual Core processor (Runs 2 cores @ 2.2Ghz)
Thermalright XP-90C heatsink + Arctic Silver + Panaflo 92MM fan for cooling (I have plans to overclock and should be able to get it up there but haven't messed with it yet....)
1GB of Crucial SDRAM DD2 400 (PC3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel
1 ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition 256MB
.. still using my Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM SATA 8MB cache HD = along with 2 other 7200RPM drives. (Planning to get 2 10,000 RPM drives for Raid 0 soon..)
Sound Blaster Audigy ZS 2 Gamer Edition sound card

BTW, VioletSkye, isn't it Western Digital Raptor and not Maxtor Raptor? Maxtor's is called the DiamondMax 10, right?

Edit: Oops I don't have an X-Fi Platinum Card, I was just using VioletSkye's post quoted as stuff to change 'cuz I was lazy. Meh. I only have that Audigy ZS 2 Gamer Edition sound card. I don't have those Raptors either, I do plan to get them though! Read some good stuff on them.

Yep, it is Western Digital http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif I have too many things going on in my head all the time http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

BTW I believe the DiamondMax 10 is only 7200rpm. I'm not aware of a 10,000 rpm drive from Maxtor. I know Fujitsu and Hitachi both make one though.

There might be an 8400 or 8600 RPM one. Been awhile since Ive checked but there might be. 10k would be better. Just watch out that it doesnt burn itself out. LOL

They don't make harddrives in 8400 or 8600 rpm versions lol. All of the Maxtors are 7200 rpm. There are a few companies (Fujitsu, Hitachi and Seagate) however that make 15,000 rpm harddrives which are mostly SCSI interface http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I said MIGHT & that I wasnt sure. Doesnt anyone pay attention when someone's talking. I dont mind being corrected but I do mind when the person correcting me isnt paying attention. Consider it a pet peeve...

The only thing that VioletSkye was trying to point out is that there has never been a such thing as 8400 or 8600RPM drives... anywhere at any time by any company for any interface.

The last four speeds are 5400, 7200, 10,000 and 15,000 RPM.

The jump went from 7200 to 10000 RPM a long time ago. So even if it's been awhile since you checked, it'd have still remained the same.

You won't be seeing 20k drives either. Flash and light are the next speed boosts you'll be seeing in hard disks. Infact if you know how to make one, you can make a 4+ gig hard disk right now, it just costs a bundle.

Speaking of which, that reminds me. Why memory cards? Why not USB thumbdrives which provide a ton more storage, and the ports are built onto the PS2 already.

Oh & watashiwa, thanks for explaining. Yep, it HAS been awhile. I used to sell among other things, hard drives but that was LOOONG ago. Most recent connection Ive had to them was this external one I have for my comp. That too I bought a couple years back. Its not a bad one either, given the price.

No need to get edgy, sir. It's not my fault that people are seeing right through your BS. If you'd quit feigning knowledge, you really wouldn't have this problem.

By the way, watashiwa was also calling you out, since you apparently missed the last line of his post. Read it real closely.

Well, if everyone but one in particular would like to get back on topic, that would be great. We were talking about specs & HDs. Watashiwa, I appreciate your patience in explaining about the different HDs. You know I hadnt checked in awhile & ty for sharing such info. Now, I know. Not sure how many RPMs are on my HD but its a pretty decent, portable, 120GB HD. Serves my purposes. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

A. I absolutely was paying attention and that's why I simply pointed out that there has never been a harddrive in 8400 or 8600 rpm versions. The fact that you said "might" doesn't mean that someone else can't provide facts about your statement. If I said there "might" be a chance that the moon is made of cheese, that doesn't give me immunity from someone else correcting me. As Watashiwa pointed out, the 10,000 rpm drives have been out for quite awhile, so if you sold them, you certainly should have been aware of their existence.

B. I have a pet peeve also which involves insecure people getting upset because someone provides "facts" that conflict with their "opinions" (even if they "aren't sure."). I wasn't being mean or condescending to you. I wasn't making fun of you or ignoring that fact that you weren't sure about it. I simply stated fact and it shouldn't have been a big deal, but apparently you couldn't handle it for whatever reason. Another pet peeve of mine is when someone claims I'm not paying attention when they themselves are the ones not paying attention.

Anyway that's all I have to say about this idiotic off-topic skew except that: Odin, you were the one who took this thread off topic to begin with.

Back on topic:
I think it's still going to be awhile before we see anything replacing SATA and SATA 2 as the standard for harddrives.

Considering how horribly off-topic this thread has become, I am going to lock it.

To summarize, you will need a Playstation 2 with a broadband adapter. You will not need the PS2 hard drive. We do not know if it will be playable on dialup yet.
