The updates only talk about missions....What about just
going to a planet and leveling up?

We will probably be able to do that. There just hasn't been anything official released yet.

Well, specific details havn't been released on traveling around the world, but apparently, the once small, yet convient lobbies are now being switched for massive cities. Those along will be worth a look.

That would suck if you couldn't roam around the planet without doing a mission.

I'm assuming PSU will be similar to WoW in the level grinding and map roaming.

You mean similar to ANY RPG. Remember guys, when it comes down to it, its still an RPG. That means we will still be able to roam & discover. Maybe, there might be plotpoints in game (regardless of mode) that might require beating a quest or what not. However, I still think that for online mode, we should be able to start at the GC (if thats where we start) & immediately start planetary exploration on the planet of your choice.

I meant that the roaming expirience would feel similar to WoW, and the fact that monsters will be roaming freely aswell.

no need to be hostile or crass.

1. Scott, wasnt being hostile or crass. Just thats how any RPG is. Who would wanna play a game where you couldnt explore an open field?

2. DM, dont start. Youre just dying to bring up FF VIII's exam. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Im gonna reprogram the exam's pillar's to shoot Megid instead of fire & ice at you. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Oh, & extra Lillies. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Crap...wait, how would you stop me? I'll just go when no one is looking http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Then end up dead from roaming alone http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_dead.gif

Hmm, well my mental library of RPGs is VERY small, but we're talking free roaming, like...

Well, FFXI (didn't play)
W.o.W (don't play)

Star Ocean.

There an entire world you can explore with multiple cities, market places, people NPCs, you can make trips to other areas by foot or high-speed transport.

And each planet is like this.

Wow that would be awesome, then again in W.o.W. and FFXI (and i'm sure many others) Since it's one place you can TRAVEL THE ENTIRE PLANET right?

PSU, i don't think you can travel every inch of a planet, just particular areas you have access to.

Universe means big, but i just can't believe it would be THAT big.

Not that it would be a bad thing. Oh i'd pee myself ALL over again.

Edit: Maybe with each mission you expore more and more different areas of the planet, that you can go to manually "out of mission" Hmm. We'll have to see ._. -hugs his flip top- darn....to Import and play offline, or no? -sigh!-

I think it may be a free roaming world in the sense that the stages/zones on the planet map are accessible to you, but the dungeons/ruins are probably accessible as you progress in the missions. As for freely roaming, I think there will be free roaming where you can go down to the planet and just level up and explore. I'm willing to take a guess that missions will act more as challenges, and a way to go through the storyline just to make the game more interesting.

They said in extra mode you can freely roam and choose whatever character's card you have to join you, and as you go further in the storyline offline with ethan the more areas are unlocked to you offline in extra. So my guess is online will be pretty much the same format as in you can freely roam areas that you've explored probably accessing more via missions. Likely based on the leader (game maker's) progress in the storyline.

it really does make me wonder about Extra mode, Online characters are stored server side right? Ala "Blue Burst" Right? (note: anyone know how many characters per account/card yet?)

Is there really a reason WHY offline multiplayer wouldn't work? And will quest be avaible offline? Interesting, so many possiblities. I'm going to be SO disappointed if PSU flops.

soon enough. we will know.

I remember having a conversation while playing PSO on my Dreamcast, just several months after I got it (1st day it hit shelves at Best Buy).

I said something like "This game is awesome, don't get me wrong.. but I wish you had more freedom. Wouldn't it be cool if you could pilot vehicles? I wish the town was bigger and there was more space to roam around on the planet."

I did always appreciate how PSO was a little less open-ended then your typical MMORPG. I did want it to be just a tad more open-ended, though. Not as open as say... EQ or even City of Heroes, but just enough to have a bit more elbow room to goof off. PSU seems like it's gonna have these things.

Based on the screenshots and information that the team has let trickle out, it seems like it'll give you a lot of freedom compared to PSO. It's only natural to assume you'll be able to freely roam around the planet. If they plan to restrict us to missions only, then.. they need to put the crackpipe down and push the release back a bit further to give us a real RPG. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_bash.gif

Are we even sure if it's an MMORPG?
This game has one hell of an identity crisis if you ask me, lol
