View Full Version : Shields?

I was reading up on PSU and two things caught my interest, duel wielding and the Shield Line System. Does this mean shields are now a thing of the past? If so I'm going to miss them.

Idk if thats the case. It seems to talk about an invisible shield or barrier except for the lines on Ethan's clothing. Each color representing a particular element. However, thats just Ethan. That doesnt account for other NPCs or your char online. Im sure shields will probably exist. If not, then this invisible barrier would serve as such.

I thought Sheild line was the explaination for why you cannot see armor. I think barriers/sheilds might take a hand this time (and may be what that character was holding 0_0 not a slicer)

But, if youre holding a shield, you cant dual wield. At least having some sort of body barrier, youll be shielded & STILL be able to dual wield. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

That's the point. In PS4, you either dual weilded, or carried a shield. It is a dillemma that the player must decide for himself. Either you dodge half of the attacks and kill the enemy slower, or try to kill it before it can hit you. It's Genius!

Well, that is a common dilemma in any RPG. But, you must ask yourself: Why a shield 'system' then? If this photon barrier system is present, would that not imply that you can still be shielded even with dual weaponry? An added shield would just add to your defensive power.

No, evasionary purposes. Armor is defense, which is always present, no matter what weapon you have on. Sheilds/Barriers raise evasion, the dodgy ability.

For general purposes, any armor you wear, be it body armor, shields, etc, are SUPPOSED to raise DEF. If they raise evasion, you could be speedy as hell, it doesnt mean you wont incur dmg. If we're going to go by shields raising eva then if anything, a good pair of boots would do that. Shields, when you think about them, take hits so you dont have to. Youre not throwing a shield at an enemy while you run away. LOL THAT would be evasion. Hey, that would be a cool attack. Expensive, but, cool.

Yeah, the shield line system is just a way the developers are lazy, http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
But I've gotta hand it to them, they deserve it with the massive world they've been working on.

hopefully the shields aren't invisible like they were in PSO >.>

imagine, you could RP a knight and have a huge shield and big sword and say something cheesy like "here i come to save the day!"

omg

No, you wouldnt be a knight. You'd be Mighty Mouse. LOL That was HIS catchphrase. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Uh oh, I shouldnt admit to knowing that. Oh God, Im showing my age.

Atleast he didn't say "Up and Atom!" http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif..
But I don't think ST totally abandoned the idea of visual shields, they'll just probably be some of the more rare items like on PSO..
I didn't even know there were rare shields until I about a year after owning pso ep1&2!..and theres still ones I haven't seen (while playing).

Also, in keeping with the 'what if visible shields are rare', I like how when you combine various armor pieces of the same set, you get a bonus to stats/elements as a reward. A good setup Ive loved is Delsaber Buster & Shield. Your stats shoot up way high & help give a good bit of Dark Resist. With those & some other items, my RAmarl has a DR of 105, thus, being immune to Megid. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Its entirely possible that this idea may return & thus, reward you for sacrificing dual wield for a chance to enhance yourself in other ways.

Visible Rare sheilds would be pretty awesome. Not only would they increase certain stats like crazy, but add some style factor. That'll be the day when a group of people find the first PSU rare, heh.
Also, I'm sorry for the sudden topic hijacking, but I've got a question...
Regular stats ARE still going to be in effect for PSU, right? lol

From what we know, yes. I wish Luck would get thrown out. Using mats to aid in stat raising, Luck Materials were the absolute worst items in the game.

I never found enough of them, and with my luck boosted by ten, it's only 32. Criticals are very useful, especially with the delsaber combo. It does massive damage. Hard attacks doubled normal, and crits multiplied by 1.5. That seems like it would be useful on some monsters in PSU.

Back on topic, we need the sheild system more effective. Mine NEVER kicked in when I needed it. A Sinow Blue could get Three crits in, in a row, and it wouldn't work. But, in the forest, 1/3 Bartle hits would be blocked. I just hope Hunter types will be more evasive this time around...

Thats explainable in 3 reasons:

1. Bartles are much weaker enemies. You eventually become strong enough to block most of their attacks. My FOmarl can do so.

2. You have to level up a bit more to handle Sinows more defensively as theyre clearly stronger than regular dwelling enemies.

3. Sinows are cheap bitches that dont play by the rules anyway. Thus, when defeating one, it is presumed one cheers their demise.

Omg, I'd hate to switch off topic, but is anyone here pissed off greatly by the Sinow's in the TTF quest when you hit a certain room in the mines? lol

How about the first time encountering S-Red's in ver2?

*Sinow Red casts Shifta*

Me: Oh ****!

Back to topic.

If shields as we know them are indeed gone I can live with it. The coolness factor of a visable shield would be missed though. To make up for it some of the rarer armor could have neat visual effects when blocking.

And PSU will make up for it in just plain ass-kickyness http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

That too. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'm sure once we play the game all the good new stuff will overshadow anything that was lost.

Shields aside, I think ppl will be stuck drooling on the fact that now you dont need 2 hands to wield a 1 handed wep. Trust me, it sticks with ya. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
