Computer being so friggin loud? I come back to school form the weekend and it is so friggin loud. It sounds like it is coming from the back(power supply)?
Also, when I hit the back area near the one fan, it goes quiet for a little. Then it whirs back up.
This is terribly annoying.

In my own experience (if you're whacking the power supply) then yes, the fan on your power supply is probably going out. Had an exhaust fan in back go out last week and before that, it'd shown the same symptoms.

Thanks, I hit it a bunch of times and thought it fixed it. It was good for a half hour then it starts up again.

Get a can of compressed air and clean the guts of the computer. It can happen that dust forms a layer hard and thick enough to create friction.
And if that wasn't the source of the problem, then at least you'll have helped with the airflow. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Pay special attention to the power supply fan in particular. If this doesn't solve the problem, then you really need to replace the power supply, as it will invariably overheat and potentially cause some rather annoying problems. You should be able to pick up a new power supply for about $35 or so.
Alternatively, it is possible to replace just the fan, but this is unadvisable as the capacitors in the power supply may retain a 120 volt charge, even months after being unplugged. If you're like me, then this knowledge likely won't stop you, in which case, get yourself a new fan, some wire stripers and some heat shrinks.

Hmm, well I have no idea what most of you are talking about so I am going blast it with air. I can't even remember how quiet it used to be, I wish I had money to upgrade this bitch.

Yeah, last time that happened to me, my power supply went out. (It actually caught on fire, but didn't do much damage)
I'd clean it out with compressed air/vacuum ASAP.

I blasted it with air...didnt do shit yet. I hate computers.

If you do decide to purchase a power supply, don't be cheap about it. I purchased a cheap 600W supply I could find a couple years ago, and while it provided decent power, it was irregular. Meaning, it was prone to providing either too much, or too little, voltage to the various parts of the machine. This is a problem notorious with cheap supplies, that and efficiency is low, and wattage is measured by the maxium output instead of the constant output. You can easily find a good name supply online, and generally they are not too much more expensive than the offbrand models (unless you crave wattage, features, quiet, cool, asthetics, and efficiency over 70%).
Some names to remember would be, Rosewill, OCZ, PC Power and Cooling (freaking expensive, but best that the consumer market can buy. They even have a 1kW model!), ThermalTake, Antec, Cooler Master, Enermax, Seasonic, ASUS (same company that makes various other computer components), Fortron Group (FSP Group), and Silverstone. Personally, I would suggest PC Power and Cooling, ThermalTake, Antec, Seasonic, or Silverstone and you can easily find a 400+ Watt model from around $35-40, or a 500 Watt from $40 on up although any of the companies I suggested should give you good results for the life of the supply.
A question I have though, how long has that supply been running? Some of the cheaper supplies, the ones generally included with lower end computers or with computer cases, can have life ranges as low as 30000-40000 hours, or less. (About 3-4 years constantly running at 25 C or 77 F, and drop as temperture rises, which in most supplies will reach far higher than 25, more like 35). Like anything, power supplies have a shelf life. If you have been overtasking it or it has been running a number of years, even with normal use, it will invariably go out. Some last for over a decade, others, like my cheapo, last a couple months before they fry out.

My computer has been running with the same stuff since around August of 2004.
Edit- Things not working makes me terribly angry. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

New post to bump this, Sorry.
Say I get a new PS, anyone give me some cheap cheap cheap examples online? Or, anyone have any extras looking to get rid of? We can work something out.

What is the rating on your current power supply (watts)?
Also, what type of computer case do you have? (ATX, etc.)

mine is noisy too.

Antec case, i think it says 15 on the back, in the red thing. It has been quiet all day so far...

Does the current powers supply say anything such as ATX on it?

Uhhh no, not that I see on it.
It is made in China though.

Hmm...
Can you take and post some decent pics of the label(s) on your current power supply?
The wattage of the power supply should be in the low to mid hundreds (depending on the computer's age and how powerful the parts in it are).

Put it this way. If you don't know wtf we're talking about, it'd be a good idea to find someone you know who knows computers and basically tell'em your computer needs its Power Supply replaced. If they know ANYTHING about computers, they'll understand and can help you get it replaced.

It is off and on, not as loud but louder. Why the hell does hitting it quiet it down?
