View Full Version : You know what customizable clothing might mean?

Fashion fads. Trends. Whatever you want to call it. Think about it. So far, we have no idea whether or not clothes will actually carry stats, but for now, let's assume they don't. Even without that, eventually, some piece of clothing is going to appear on PSU and be a big hit. I can see it now. Think a pre-Christmas Macy's; stores crowded with people trying to get that hot new boot, or slick new shirt and glove set. "You're still wearing the old purple pants? Ugh, that is so last update!"

Get enough people together, and they're going to start deciding what's "trendy" and not, right? I'm no fashion-person, but the fact that this game allows this possibility is kinda exciting.

I hate fashion trends... In fact, I plan on picking my starting outfit based on what I think other people WONT pick...

If there are fashon trends I'm going to completely ignore them. Because of the fact that this is a game it gives me even less (Heck practically no reason at all) of a reason to care what people think of what I wear. I'm going to pick what I think my character looks good in.

...Really, there weren't fashion trends in PSO, but it had somewhat customizable clothing, too. I don't see it happening here.

That, and people pretty much already design their characters as an extension of their personality, not by what's in-style at the moment. Well... Most of us, anyway. :/

i don't care about fashion trends i just want my character to look diffrent from everyone else so whatever i want i will wear no matter if somebody criticises it.

Well, its inevitable when ppl say what looks good or bad in a game when you have the ability to alter the appearance of your char. Its rampant in EQOA & Im sure it has happened in WoW & FFXI. Me personally, Im going to wear what I want to wear. The option to buy or even find dropped clothes allows me to have my guys wear what I want. Im definitely looking for unique looks for each of my chars, but, it will be something I choose for them, not cause nameless ppl say so.

I'm most likely going to stay with a standard style of clothes, pants, t-shir, and over shirt. But it is guaranteed that there will be AT LEAST some people who are obsessed with fashion. Those are the people who respond to the question of what they are going to do with the mission's reward with: "Uh Duh! I'm going shopping!"

I plan on making sure that my character looks cool by MY definition. I don't see myself trying to impress anybody. Fashion trends in video games and online communities that have avatars are just sad.. I saw it in Gunbound and Ragnarok among a few others.

Of course, some outfits just look generally much better then others, in which case you'll see a lot of people wearing the same thing. That's only natural, but a large part of the appeal of an outfit leaves for me when I see more then a few other people wearing it.

hypersaxon
Feb 14, 2006, 05:46 PM
I'm not worried at all about people wearing the same outfit as me. I'll just wear whatever I feel like wearing for the day. I'll buy every article of clothing, regardless of what it looks like, and whatever I'm in the mood for, that's what I'll wear.

I can see how people will want to wear certain clothes or have a certain hairdo (I remember seeing TONS of HUmars using the spiky hair lol) but I don't think it will be too much of a problem that you'll start to see a million clone characters. There's so many customization options in this game that you'd be hard-pressed to find a character that looks "exactly" like you. If you want to be unique, of course you could look and see what the trends are and defy them, or you could go with the flow if you wanted to, or you could just pick something you like. Either choice is just fine, just as long as you're happy with your character.

Of course, people will judge what looks good and what doesn't. In FFXI, though, people don't judge another charatcter by looks, but instead, by the effectiveness and how well the armor suits the job's role in a party.

Although, in FFXI, your character's look is dependant on their equipment, and their equipment usually determines how well they perform in a party, good or otherwise, which is different from PSO/U.

Let's just hope we don't have a PSU clan called "Fashion Police"... And hope they don't all talk with lisps, and critique peoples' rooms, too... :/

I can imagine fashion trends in PSU. The folks here SAY they'll make a character that will be unique, but you know that if you see a cool lookin' outfit you might wanna try it on your char. I know I will. I won't follow a fashion trend just cause its a fashion trend, but if I see something that looks good on another character, I might wanna try it out for myself, and if it looks good I just may stick with it.

Sgt_Shligger
Feb 14, 2006, 06:56 PM
i won't go with any trends. I take long periods of time to make any characters outfit. i always plan that I won't change the outfit ever. The only thing taht makes me change the outfit is a new weapon, power, or the like.

I dont care what any 'fashion trends' are, hell, I don't follow them in real life. Knowing me, I'll make my character look as gothic as possible, or dress her like Uriko from Bloody Roar- haven't decided yet. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Trivial point, but isn't "gothic" a fashion trend?

Hopefully the clothing line becomes that expansive though. I'd love to be able to find Gothic Lolita or J-street fashion gear.

True, true. It is an interesting idea. I guess we will have our own private areas to use for things like guildhalls, why didn't I think of that? Even if it is only six per room, you can still use a small guildhall for it's most important purposes like leader meetings and so forth.
Looks like there will be a lot of possibilities. I guess that's what's making PSU especially interesting to speculate on.

Though I expect to be as unique as possible. I do expect fashion trends to happen on holidays. On christmas people will wear festive clothing. On Halloween people will wear scary clothing. Stuff like that I like, but regular fashion trends only lead to bloated egoes. I hope they have an updater that tells you what others are wearing so you can be more unique.

OdinTyler
Feb 15, 2006, 12:10 PM
Well, thats easy. Wear Halloween costumes on Christmas & vice versa. Thats a quick way to be different. LOL I totally agree with you tho. Like fashion is more important than practicality. Yeah, its good to look nice, but, sometimes you gotta wear what works in battle. Besides, having your char look cool doesnt make you better than anyone else. I just hope too many egos from past games dont appear on PSU. Im just glad to see so many ppl agree with the customization that it should just be fun, not cause cliques.

Blackwaltz-R
Feb 15, 2006, 04:32 PM
The fashion won't be an issue at all. There are people who wear what "looks cool" and then there are the people who just chose something that isn't too extravagant. The same way people chose their names, with little thought or taste http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Its good for people not to care what others think because if people did care then people like more than likely be on their case all the time.

Excatly how long does it take for you to determine how you feel at a time. lol

I'd say arounf 95% of the names people choose to use have atleast one of the following:

Noun
Adjective
Verb
Adverb

The name I use on this forum which I stopped using about 3 years have an adjective and a noun which I felt expressed lack of creativity and dropped. Using a color alone in a name is just horrid along with the fact I got it from a FF game but since it wasn't a commonly used name I decided to use it.

The worst of the worst are the romanji names >.<

But thats after using practical stuff ad nauseum & I need a change of pace. Right now, my RAmar is dressed in red & black, has a Red Nidra mag & uses a Ruby Bullet. Alot of red going on. Maybe its a mistranslation & 6 is still the max. But yeah, on my main, her room will be the official guild hall as she is the founder & leader of the clan. I think you'll have to buy clothes according to your race. Everyone probably won't be able to wear the same thing. Newman's seem to have that whole fuedal japanese priest thing going, so the clothes they're able to buy might reflect that and a couple other different styles. Cast are probably stuck with attactments to thier body parts or complete body changes or something.
