M.U.D.S., telnet etc. (semi-serious)

Does anyone remember the old MUD games? The birth givers to the modern RPG? Or telnet? The other interweb used with command prompt? I just remembered MUDS and telnet when i was reading through a magazine with an article on it.

Anyone have any experiences with those? I was fighting a pidgeon (it was "ez" experience) and it said i kicked it in the knee.... whcih caused a scatch and it pecked me whcich caused "severe bleeding"

Absolutely.

I miss telnet a lot. I don't think that I've even RUN telnet since nether.net went down. Unfortunately, I didn't get into it as much as I could have while it was around.. missed out on the MUDS and some good old fashioned BBSes. I used to play on various MUDs back in the day.
One of them I even played on for a few years before I got burned out on it. There's some pretty imaginative people out there. I even played on one that used Pueblo for its graphics and was basically all of the first Final Fantasy, but in an MMO/MUD form. Pretty sweet.

I didn't know much about MUDS (didn't knwo the proper name0 until i read a magazine about the command prompt menu and what it can do. It gave me a great site for finding a lot of still-running MUDS!!!

mudconnect.com i played the birth givers of the modern day RPGS. It is mostly text graphics and vivid text descriptions of your surroundings. you people should try it. Sad, forgotten technology....

Not true.

See: Adventure (one of the text versions), Zork, etc. Text based games gave birth to the MUD, had offshoots called hypertext (such as afternoon, a story), and eventually spawned the RPG of today.

(Also: Ultima, Wizard, blah blah)

The text adventures were, of course, inspired by "Choose Your Own Adventure" novels. Which were probably inspired by something before then, all leading back to the moment when a cave dwelling...

I never used telnet, I know about it (along with FTP via shell command) but never bothered with them. I never have the time to deal with MUDs. >_>

I never manage to stay interested in one longer than a week or two. I end up looking over at my other games with longing... they seem to say "use the g-d graphical user interface already!"

I kept trying to join a Beast Wars MUSH back in the day, but it was a real pain to get a character OK'ed by the people who ran it.

First off, it took them two weeks to respond to a submission. Add that to the fact that they rejected my character several times simply because they didn't like his name, and you can imagine my frustration.

After about the third or fourth rejection, I pretty much gave up on it.

I was supposed to run through a town (VERY bad text graphics map) and do something. I decided to fight. I Could dual wield also... shovel and wooden staff.

Doesn't sound good but it's all you started with (if youra spellcaster.) I saw on the text area description "pidgeon" and I could fight anything with colored text. I said "attack pidgeon" instead of "cast <spell> pidgeon" so it said i attacked the pidgeon causeing a scratch.

It pecked me causeing "BLEEDING" so I typed Cast magic missle at pidgeon. It said "You begin to chant. INTERUPTED. Very frustrated i scrolled frantically to the help menu while my health was getting pecked away.

I typed push and uit said "you try to pus hthe pidgeon away" causing a wound. Then i selected "kick pidgeon" and it said "You kick the pidgeon in the knee causing a scratch.

The pidgeon killed me making eternally opposed to any spellcaster in an RPG.
