depends on sword and sword-users ability to cut through wood, asuming this is a traditional wooden bo staff

But a ninja wouldn't need a sword to cut through wood, just people.

Ninjas would probably just stab people with a small knife, rather than attempt to cut through anything.

It is possible to divert a sword strike with a bo staff.
