weird
Have any of you been on the JP and EU servers of DC version 2 in the past few days?... A particularly strange thing has popped up. The last time I was there, you could see it in the lobbies of 01-01-01 (that's Io), and 25-01-01 (hope my memory is correct; the latter should be the first EU ship in the list).
If you look around the lobby, you'll see a short, black RAcaseal with the pseudo-pigtails style of head. Her name is "Millenium" and her language setting is German, level 200. If you look at rank, it will say "AN-DROID" instead or "BU-EI" or whatever.
Looks like a hacker at first glance, in fact I avoided her to start off with. But first, notice the oddity that the same character is in two lobbies at once. Furthermore, hang around in that lobby for awhile... Millenium doesn't move at all, and seems like she's idling, but eventually she'll start naming off a ship, block, lobby, and team name. If you're in the European lobby, it'll be in English, but either way, the term "FSOD" is visible. She's naming off the time of the last FSOD that occured on the network, and where it happened.
Millenium obviously doesn't log on from a Dreamcast... it's not even sure she's a player. O_o What IS for certain is that she is a program; a bot that keeps tabs on code-usage and hacking on the DC network.
What I've seen for myself is that she can keep track of where FSOD's happen, in teams, even if she can't stop them. We went over to the last lobby she mentioned, and sure enough, two level 200 players with names like "TERRORIST-X." Uh-huh, pretty suspicious. The other thing I saw for myself is that she'll talk to you if you tell her certain commands with chat bubbles. They were in Japanese, though, so I couldn't try them myself.
As for rumors, I've also heard tell that if anyone RSOD's or FSOD's a lobby in her presence, she'll detect their Guild Card number and soon thereafter they'll be banned from the network permanently. Another rumor is that she'll automatically disconnect anyone who uses color codes in the lobby.
A friend of mine has said she's met the person who created this bot, logging on under a different character. I really want to meet this person sometime. At first I was worried that this was a disturbingly devout hacker who had broken into the PSO network, but fortunately seemed to at least have some sort of morals... but after talking about it for awhile, my friends and I can't see how this could be accomplished by anyone without the help of Sega.
So... why in this late age of DC PSO are they finally bringing some security to the DC network?... And why is it in the form of a little RAcaseal named Millenium instead of a series of server patches? Well, no one can say for certain, but I'm excited, because I'm hoping this is Sonic Team's way of testing a prototype for the Gamecube servers. Perhaps this is their trump card, which they'll keep in the hold until code-users really start to become common on Gamecube.
Why it's in the form of an actual character, well... it's very strange... it almost makes me think of Hack//Sign; the network's way of fighting code-users comes as such a tangible figure. O_o Perhaps this is fighting fire with fire? Perhaps they figure that the best way to scare off hackers is to make them worry that they're being watched? Perhaps in the future "Millenium" will come under all sorts of names and guises and randomly police the network?
Anyway, I really can't say for sure, but this is the most interesting thing to happen on the Dreamcast network for quite awhile. I certainly hope it turns out to be something sponsored by Sega. And if it isn't, well... wow.
