View Full Version : Names on PSU

I was wondering if any of the Beta testers can answer this. Are names reserved once they are taken as in many MMO's, or can you have many characters share the same name as in PSO.

I doubt that they reserve the name since your character isn't restricted to 1 server like WoW or DDO is, but just wanted confermation.

I believe that Ryna stated that names are not reserved, same as in PSO. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Oh great... Here comes the influx of Cloud, Sephiroth, and *insert DBZ character here* clones if they don't make the names reserved... I was very much hoping they'd make names unique.

Latiku
May 11, 2006, 08:05 PM
I have to agree with Kaeorii. As much as it would such to have the name I wanted taken already, I still kinda like the idea of that name is yours and yours only. I remember on PSO, I would have numerous people ask me if I was the other guy.
Either way, I will be happy. Thanks for clearing it up for me guys, good to know it is based on partner cards now.

As for DBZ and FF names, you can never stop them. Although, I do fine clones to be interesting from time to time.

I would like to note that I never got the chance to test whether people can have duplicate names. I am just under the impression that it is possible.

On a site note, you'll be able to have fairly long names in this game. One of my characters had a 15-letter name with a few spaces left.

DikkyRay
May 11, 2006, 08:14 PM
Ryna do you know if they will censor some names? Becaus I know that some people see my name as a perverted thing.... but its actually a nickname.

Ryna
May 11, 2006, 08:16 PM
They will probably censor certain names, but that is just speculation.

I do know that the censoring is more intelligent this time. You can actually say words like "shoe" and "Saturday" now.

I'm actually fine with their being multiple name duplicates. It is like in real life. How many Pauls are there in the city of Boston, or how many Jasons? I don't see a problem with it though it does feel nice to be unique. But most of the time, I've never seen a duplicate of my name on PSO and I know I won't see one on PSU.

I don't think reserved names would stop the flood of Sephiroths, Ryu's and Goku's.

Moreso we'd end up with something along the lines of these:

SSJ1GOKU - SSJ2SEPHIROTH - all the way up to
SSJ2006-NARUTO

What if I want to party with the same players? Do I have to contact them through a ID number or something?

You can always contact a party member using their Partner Card (if you have it).

If the team leader has your Partner Card, they can invite you to join the team remotely.

im of two minds about this. cause i hated in GW not being able to get any of the names i wanted, but i also would dislike seeing abunch of people with anime names. i mean dont get me wrong anime rules, but lets leave it where it is at, on tv or in a video game. not online.

Heh, I'm glad it's like PSO's names, Ryo is such a bland name, but I figured, I never named a PSO character after myself, might as well do it with PSU http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif I don't care if others take it, I only plan to play with old PSO friends anyways

I don't really mind, but reversed names kinda make it easier to know who's who for me, the amount of clouds/spirits etc I've played with on PSO, they might as well be the same person, because I can never remember who's who once I see a popular name http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

I also like the ability to search or message someone if all you have is their name, I like that feature in other MORPGs, some people might not like a name search due to want of privacy, but a message service without requiring someone's gc at the very least would be great imo (ala WoW)

EDIT: fixed typo-s XP

Perhaps there will be a better CHoice Search function(I know it doesn't exist on BB), such as where you can search people by level, race and names. Just speculation, I dunno, I've never had much trouble with the card system in the past, but I guess this is a different game for a reason.

I wish they were reserved, because it leads to greater variety and an over all better experience. Considering the rather hefty visual customization you can do in PSU, I doubt that you will see too many people that look alike with the same name (unless of course the person is intentionally copying some one else).

Seriously though, can't people come up with something better than a FF or DBZ name? Don't get me wrong, I have a HUnewearl named Morrigan (one of the best Capcom Characters ever http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif), with the wings and all. But I have never seen any one do that so I thought it would be fun. Oh well, that's my 2 cents http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I think its fine that the names arn't reserved. As long as their is no two people running around with the same name, act the same way, and have the same friends, i think that system cant go wrong.

About the DBZ, FF, etc, names... oh well. lol. If someone is really inclined to be Goku then thats their choice, now whether people mock them for it well.....thats their own fault.

On PSO - I generally wouldn't accept Guild Cards from anyone who had a FF/DBZ name. I didn't know them, and I didn't care about them. Though even with the original sounding names - I sill woudn't keep their guildcard unless they were a very good friend, and extremely good player, or had a interesting/funny Guild Card comment.

Then again.. I guess I'm not one to talk since I plan to name my character Neika. Though, I think, Neika works better as an independant name than something like SSJSeymoroth. Most people don't even recognize it as a mixture of Nei and Rika until I explain it to them.

I feel kinda the same way Sinue.
If someone with a DBZ/FF name asks to team with me, I'll usually say no. Unless they prove me otherwise, my experience has shown me that those type of people usually don't work out well in a team.

Only once, once mind you, have I ever had someone with a DBZ/FF7 name prove me wrong about that assumption to which I prompty apologized for assuming the worst.

Sgt_Shligger
May 13, 2006, 12:26 AM
It won't be a problem for me or for many others. The point of this system... if you choose a really common name then that is fine... it's not original so it hcllenges you to get a good name.

I came up with "shligger" when me and a friend got into a racial argument...

I am gonna assume it's like PSO. The card has an ID number on it. When it does the search it isn't looking up the name, it is looking up the number that is unique to you(or the guy your looking for).

I like this. I really hate it when someone else takes a name I want, it gets disapointing when you cannot name your character what you had originally planned. I can be at ease that I don't have to rush out on launch day and hurry to reserve a name.

And let's put it this way, if the names where unique to each character, if the servers are linked with the JP and it comes out in Japan first, guess whos gonna get 1st dibs on names? I bet no one would like that.

Sev
May 13, 2006, 01:03 AM
Yeah, I definitely couldn't be Sev on most of the games that I play. And I mean... When you think about it, it's not logical for only one person to have a name. I guess it's because they don't have any other way of identifying the person as mentioned, so I really hope they do allow it.

Some of the stupidest names I encountered on PSO- Xbox:

Riku
Shadow Warrior
Killer
Killa-probably the stuidest ever if chosen by anyone
Shadow force
Captain America
Of course, Goku and pretty much any other two letter combinations with "ku" you can think of

Things I am guaranteed to see on the first day I log into PSU Xbox 360 version:
-Stupid tards playing annoying rap music as loud as they can in the lobbies
-Some girl screaming at sexist guys who are making fun of her
-Hackers most likely with Sonic characters talking about how cool they are
-People making porno symbols with the chat symbol tool (the most disgusting one I saw was what looked like a stick being rammed into a pandas behind)
-Some kid with a southern drawl trying to speak english to northerners
-people chasing each other like noobs in the lobbies
-some guy getting to the top most point of the lobby and exclaiming, "I am king, bow down to me!"
-screaming annoying 10 year olds wanting rare items

choice search would be quite convinient as it is on PSO, but not many ppl actually new to turn it on so one could only find like 4 ppl this way. i also try to give my chars 2 names for uniqeness like Jace Tridwell or Rina Matsugane. i have to admit i did make a Kikoku and Jou'un characters (2 of 4 legendary katana makers) for fun, but i wonder how origional do ppl think they are making sepheroth and inuyasha chars? what would be funny is to see a Goku char that modeled his after a different goku like from saiyuki or somethin than have avery1 online say he looks nothing like Goku. btw would one still treat a sepheroth differently if he was of medium hight with short red hair?

Well, I've never had any gripes since I've never encountered anyone using the same name as me. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Although it would be nice to know my identity were safeguarded with a name registry I'd also hate it if someone got first call on a name I wished to use and thus I miss out. :/

Anyway, it's illogical for one person in the entire world to have a unique name so I like it this way.

My name's inspiration has been drawn out from Breath of Fire 2's array of characters, I just thought that Katt's appearance shared some similarities with a HUnewearl - and even more so now in PSU - and so it just stuck. Resstar was not the result of a distorted 'Resta', rather I wanted to use the name 'Redstar' but I wanted my char' to yield the Redria ID so that was off.

My other characters? Well, Lin = BoF 5's Lin - or Rin if you insist. Felis - made up to yield the desired ID.
Sakura Kero - yeah, well... that was just a half-assed character. =x
Merrith Xue - ahah! Now this one is made up. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Strangely enough I am normally very finicky about my names, in my other MMORPG experiences I've insisted that I come up with totally original or semi-original names. When I say semi-original, I mean I've mashed up two character's names together. Regolevrae is an example, who is an Iksar Coercer on EQ2.

I wonder if anyone can guess which two names I've used for that? Clues: the characters are from games of the RPG genre, they are not from the same game, they are bosses, they are draconic-like creatures - I think I've said too much.

My alt' on EQ2 is another non-original name however... a Froglok named Flaahgra, and yet no-one in-game has grasped its origins. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

As mentioned before, ID numbers are assigned per account, but also like in PSOBB, you may append comments to your partner cards. Additionally, you can always change the sort rank on your cards (You can now affix a number value to all the cards you've gotten from other players, value from 1-5, 1 being most important, to 5, being bottom of the barrel [the default for new cards]).

the chances are really low for same names unless you use a common or popular name. and even then the chances are slim. Anyways, people commonly have the same name here and there, so it's quite natural.

A good tip though is if you really wanna keep your name unique and stand out at least partially, maybe apply a last initial, or a middle initial, or a last name, or something.

Well guys, whenever I name a character I'm very unoriginal. In my first PSO experience, I made a HUMar and called him Mystic Gohan. But I got bored being LV100 for months and not being able to go any further, so I made a new HUMar called Vegito.(My Dragonball names)

Now for Star Wars names, in PSOBB my main guy is a HUMar named CountDooku. Then I made a RACast called EVA-01(Evangelion Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion), a FOMar called Juza(A boss from PS4 on the MD) and a HUCast called Megazord(MMPR).

See how unoriginal I am? In GW, I have a Ranger called Zachery Knightblade(FFVII). But for PSU I'm not sure, maybe I'll name my guy after a Dynasty/Samurai Warriors character.

Even if you had reserved names, with 15+ characters available that would leave room for Cloud 1-100000000 not to mention any form of alpha-numeric l33t speak variations to tag along instead. We'd still still have a billion Goku's an Sephiroth's, just like FFXI. So if I had the choice, ya none reserved names please, I'd rather just see Sephiroth without a serial number after it.

And I did meet one other Ancient in my PSO travels...I was much cooler than him ^___^
