Will names be exclusive to a character?

On PSO I saw a few people with the same names, is this possible in PSU?

Hmm seems kind of weird. Most games that use server side saves use exclusive names per server for character identification purposes.

Hmm. Well I haven't looked at the PSU overview yet, but I'm thinking that names will be specific to characters. In PSO it was possible to have the same name because you create the character offline, where names can be anything and when you go online it's not like Sega is going to prompt you to change it. However, since PSU is creating everything on the server I'm assuming that they wil have a database to reference, and if the name is taken than it won't allow you to use it (as Marks said).

At least I think so.

Characters are held underneath your sega account profile.

It's pretty certain that it will be like PSO, and names will not be unique. Meaning, if someone else has already named their character BillyBob, you can still name your character BillyBob. In PSO, every character was assigned a unique numerical ID, therefore there was no need for names to be unique to each person. Also, since people can travel between servers at will, there will be far too many people for unique names to be practical.

Unique names apply on things like WoW and EQ because people pick a server and they're pretty much stuck there, unless they get a server transfer (and then they have to change their name if someone on the destination server has already taken it).

So, basically, don't worry, You don't need to hop online the first day and start making characters to reserve your favorite names.

ZOMG Sephiroth is everywhere!!!! I just looked at the cover for my platinum Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD #3 and on the back in the top right corner of the tree of life diagram it says Sephiroth II. o_O

It was already said that names aren't tied to one character so anyone can be named the same name.

Which is great. Makes no sence for people to not be able to share a name.

What i love the most is how every Sephiroth you meet claims to be "the first Sephiroth"... haha.

I kind of like the server saved names. It makes everyone more unique. I mean it would suck if you were counting on a specific name and then found out someone had it, but you could just think of something else and then go out and find the person that took it! haha, that could be fun, they could be your 'nemesis' of sorts.

I don't. Nothing peeves me more than to create a character in a MMORPG that I put some real thought into, a character with what I thought would be a unique name tailor fit for the "look", only to find out the name's already taken.

Unless you name your character Sephiroth, Cloud, Goku, or Vegeta, the odds of actually running into someone else with the same name is very, very slim.

i try 2 give my characters 2 names there for if some1 takes my name, they can have it cause i will have a full name that gives my character just a little more life ^_^.but what if real life had server side names. lol mike, myke, maik mikemike, mikemyke, etc...

Try using a name like Busta -___-;... I have never in my life ever met someone else USING my name, yet it is somehow always taken.

BestRAmarEver- rofl I had the same problem on a web based game as well as most message boards. Usualy if space allowes it I use Dragon Knight JMAN as my character/screen name. This was the case of a web based game, and even though I figure NO ONE else would use a full name like that, it happened to me yet again that my name was taken. It drives me nuts sometimes like that.

Honestly, what are the chances (in real life) of NEVER encountering someone with the same name as you? There just aren't enough names out there for everyones to be unique.

I dunno, the only good thing about unique names in my opinion is that they put a limit on how many different spellings of Sephiroth people can come up with.

... I am just guessing your are REALLY REALLY IGNORANT... Sephiroth are the 13 concepts or whatnot that are the branches of the Tree of Life. It's all in Kaballah, a jewish mysticism thing. and yes, the sephiroth in ff7 was named after that

I'm glad you can have any name you want just like in PSO. I hate having to rush online just to try and get first pick at the names. I couldn't tell which one was who or maybe I just never figured out how to tell them apart. Is there a way to do this? Because if I have two people named the same on my list I don't want to start up a conversation with the wrong one. because up until now, characters were saved on consoles or computers. now all the characters are server side saved, which means we can't access them offline. it's a possibility because most mmorpg's have server side character saves and they do not allow more than one of the same name to exist.
