View Full Version : Lazek: Skuda's 3D modeling project [Update]

This past week, I've been working on my midterm project for my lowpolygon modeling class. It's not due for another 3 weeks, but I'm already finished modeling.

The only thing I have left to do is rig it with a bone structure and then I'll be able to animate it as much as I like. :3

The assignment calls for the model to be comprised of less than 1200 triangles and the character be an original creation.

Thought I'd show you the work that I have done on it.

Lazek: Stone Rhino
lowpoly game model

This was the original concept I was working with

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazekconcept.jpg

from there, I constructed a model sheet to work with in 3D.

Click! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/scan__105.jpg)

from there, I began crafting my beast digitally.

My first batch of screens:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/Lazek_lowpoly_1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/Lazek_lowpoly_2.jpg

This stage, I had just modeled out what the body structure would be. The basic shape is there, and the limbs aren't connected yet. As you can see, this could be just about anything at the moment. Even a delbiter :3

My second batch of screens:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_3.jpg

Here, I began to define the beast's features a little more, making him smoother and more distinguishable. I had also connected the front legs to the model.

My third batch of screens: (not really a batch :/)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_combined3.jpg

This stage, I connected the hind legs, and began working in some deeper details. The head is a little more defined and I added the teeth and some of the spikes.

The final version: 1178 triangles :3

here we have the final product.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_final_01.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_final_02.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_final_03.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/scottkuda/lazek_lowpoly_final_04.jpg

And there you have it. I am quite proud of myself, not only for bringing my creation to life, but doing it in my spare time. >:3

(I'm usually such a procrastinator)

so, all I have left to do is rig it and animate it and it's ready to hand in. :3

What's even better is that our final assignment is to take this model, and make it even more detailed. For the final, I get to take my model from a small 1200 triangles, to a nice 3000. I'm going to able to add in so much detail, and smooth it out nicely.

I hope you liked this stuff, and I hope to have more soon.

I'm "hopefully" going to be starting on another monster model soon. Something I like to call, a Blood Dragon. >:3

enjoy!

I can tell that some of this has been shopped.

Great work Kuda! I wish that I could figure out these darn 3D modeling programs, but I just don't have it in me.

"Blood Dragon" does not sound very pretty. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif. Why not "Happy Happy Dragon of Happiness?"

I've said it before a hundred times, but great work, hon.

I can't wait to see it finished. Mmm delicious creatures.

Skuda, that is, just amazing. Can you provide a version that is a .3ds or a .gmax? (Then everybody can copy you...)

Kudadragon? XD
Will you get to put texture on it? Cuz once you do, it'd prolly look like quite a beast!

but of course! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

as soon as I am finished with modeling and rigging the medium poly model version, I'm going to attack it with my brush and get some awesome texturing on it.

I think I'm going to try and take my texturing to the realistic level for this. :3

I may even be able to learn to put some normal mapping (using light to make the model look like a much higher quality than it really is) to put in even more detail.

I've got a lot of work ahead of me. Good thing I get so absorbed in working when I'm tinkering in 3D.

Nice work Skuda.
Those are some sexy polygons right there. Can't wait 'till you up it to 3000.

looks nice! what program did you use? to me it looks kindoff maya.. dunno why.. maybe because you haven't soften the edges yet.

I can't wait for the normal maps, what programm are you gonna use for creating the extreme high poly normals?

Skuda
07-20-2006, 03:28 PM
yes, it is maya. I don't really want to soften the edges yet, I still want it to look somewhat rocky. :/

as for normal mapping, I was told about some function in maya where I just make my high poly model and get it converted into a normal map.

easy peasy.

Dude, this is looking awesome. Makes me wish this was in a game, and I could fight it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Dx I envy those who can do 3D work...

Its coming along very nicely :3 I'm itching to see what it looks like when it's entirely finished http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

you can always try to learn it yourself http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

to create normal maps, I am useing zBrush, dunno if you ever heard of it? in zBrush you can easely edit extreme highpoly models (did 6 milion poly models on my poor iBook)

yes in maya there is a function that can do it aswell, I've tried it in maya, 3dsmax and zBrush, but zBrush is the best imo, it's worth checking out.

so, if you want something to look slightly textured on the skin do you have to raise/impress upon the original 3D model and place texture patters that are in reality not textured at all, or are you given some leniancy on the skins elevation? I wouid think it would suck to have to do the former.

About the most experiance I've had with 3D imaging is a 2001 (i think) edition of Bryce i played around with for a few hours, so I can't give much appreciation for something I don't understand a whole lot about. Other than raising and lowering the hundreads of little boxes to manipulate the shape of the polygons that make up the larger image, I know very little. so... good work I guess -_-; Can't wait for the final image.

3D modeling is basicly starting with a primitive shape, and you will make it more detailed and detailed, and like you said, you manipulate the form of the polygons by moving the vertices (your little boxes http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif )

to bring more detail on a low poly model, we use Normal maps these days, thats a three colored bumpmap that will put all the detail of a highpoly model on your lowpoly model.. a bit hard to explain http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

here is a link that shows a bit more of it: http://crytek.com/screenshots/index.php?sx=polybump&px=poly_04.jpg

My brother is building a toilet, and he is doing full fledge normal mapping. It looks amazing and it is real fun to see the process. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Once he has a workable toilet I should grab a screenie and show.

Update!

I've set up my Lazek's bone structure now and I'm almost ready to animate the lil' sucker (or big sucker.. >.>).

next steps are to weight the joints, then I'm going to texture him. It's ALIVE!!!

Sweet! Almost done. Its looking good. I don't know, I think texturing is going to be the easy part.

Well. Texturing makes up a huge part of how nice your model is going to look. It is gonna fill in all the little details for the model to make it come alive. Anyone can texture but it takes a lot to make it texture well so you don't see stretches and such. So. It is hard to make it work nice.

Looking good kuda. There better be a video of this with music.

Nice work Skuda! you better make a video http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I think texturing is going to be the easy part.

wrong! modeling is the easy part (at least low-poly). Texturing (including the unwrapping) is boring and hard, unless you are the king of photoshop.

Everyone feels so differently about this stuff. I actually love texturing, it's my favorite part of the whole 3d process. =) I find unwrapping fun too, it's like putting a puzzle together =D
