In my case, I am looking more and more certain to be importing the JP PSU to play offline until the US version comes out. Its then the US version I will be going online with.

Like Aeralure, I'm mainly looking forward to importing for offline story mode. I'm thinking I'll also get online once I finish story mode and enjoy playing with the Japanese (plus fellow importers) for a while. Then when the US version comes out, I'll get online there first http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif and await to see the crappy dub >:P

Personally, I find the US dubbing not bad at all. As for me, I'll probably have to wait until it hits stateside, myself.

I have never said every dub is a crappy dub. I give them a listen, even though that's usually only when there isnt a Japanese voice option. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Some US dubs are decent. True enough. Many are not. Let's just say I am not optimistic about having to use the dubs we're given for the US version in this case, but hey, happy to be surprised. I've never criticized anyone for preferring one vocal choice over the other though. If you by and large prefer the US dubs and are happy with them ~wonderful~. I kind of wish I could say the same but *shrugs*.

oh right...... as if Japanese voice acting is sooo 'perfect' in all games.

they have their bad voiceover histories too.

Yeah. And where in what I posted did I say either "all" US dubs are bad OR all JP original voice acting is better? Depends in part on the game's style and in part of course on the quality of the cast. Granted I said "most" in each case, but not "all".

Pu-leeease indeed. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif

Just to steer the conversation away from the Dub v.s. JP voicing arguement, since it always gets out of hand. Yus I will be on the JP version, hopefully see you there.

I'm thinking about importing the JP version for the offline game, but the problem is that I don't understand a word of japanese. If by some miracle they give the JP version the option for english text and subtitles then I will pick it up for sure. But having to constantly refer to a translation guide to navigate menus and to find out what just happened in that cutscene sounds like a real pain, and to me, not being able to understand what the characters are saying will really get in the way of me enjoying the story.

This is probably an extremely stupid question, but how do I play imported games legally on my PS2 anyways?

Saner
Jul 23, 2006, 01:17 PM
even with f.a.q. translations, the offline story doesnt feel very inviting not understanding their voiced words and stuff.

you miss out on A LOT of stuff, even things some people take for granted.

the only advantage of importing and not knowing the language, is playing it earlier, which hardly is half of what the game is.

Not a stupid question. Since I have been importing games for the better part of 10 years now, when I got a PS2 I simply got an import machine. That's certainly not the answer you're looking for I realize. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

[edit]

I changed my reply to also "Google" it. Just to be more forum PC, even though I dont think I mentioned anything out of the way.

Hhmm I would hold back from asking anything further. You aren't really 'supposed' to play games of another region in a US PS2 http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Which is quite stupid in my opinion -__-; I hate region separation. Anyways, there are ways but its not appropiate to say so in this forum. Google it up http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

I disagree. Politely mind you lol. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I dont feel you miss out on anywhere near half the game. The only thing you miss out on is some of the story. In all but the most complicated stories I have encountered while importing, you're able to get a good sense of what's going on even not knowing any Japanese. With a rudimentary FAQ in hand, or translations even, you then have a really good sense of the story but may then only be missing some of the exact dialog. The only reason I say that is I've also in some games followed it up by also then playing the US localized release.

You can either translate and memorize the menu options, learn them by trial and error, use a FAQ and/or learn some kanji and katakana, depending on what you like and how much importing you do. Its not for everyone. That is for sure. If you dont have a penchant for experimentation and/or Japanese and making that an additional layer of the game experience itself, then yeah, you're experience will be more as Saner describes and I would recommend strongly not importing.

Anyway, think i will bow out of the topic. Poor Nika originally only asking who was importing and playing online. I will likely be online a month or two while also playing offline on an import version of PSU. When it comes out for the US, to be able to play with a few friends here in the States, I'm going to have to choose that over playing only on JP servers. Unhappy about that. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I mean spending 100 dollars and stuff. 30+ for import equipment, 60 for the import game, etc. I mean like, all that money goes to waste once I get the english version 2 month after!

I mean like like......like I could save myself like 50 dollars simply waiting 2 months for the english version. buy the game at the store, no strings attached. voila! and it'll still feel brand new! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I happened to play PSO:BB JPN version but this time I decided to stay away from PSU: JP.

Why?

First of all, when I entered into PSO:BB, I pretty much knew the basics of the game like items, mechanics and the storyline.
However PSU is an entirely new game and if I can't understand the items, mechanics and storyline because of the language barrier... I'm not getting the best bang for buck there.

So in the end I have to wait for the english version and purchase that instead.

I'm going to be online from the first day, anyone want to meet up?

Some suggestions:

I think we should make a chat channel, and designate as ops any trustworthy people who can speak Japanese, to translate your items and not steal them.

That we keep most English chat to that channel when playing with mostly Japanese. It's always annoying:

1. When people don't like the fact we are playing, and whinge about it.
2. When people are delighted by us and use us for free English lessons.
3. When those speaking Japanese feel awkward about the English and stop talking.

I've had all three happen before in online games, and there's really no reason to have to put up with it. Who's with me for setting up an IRC channel or something?

I want to enjoy every aspect of the game, and since they're throwing in more story, I'll miss that in the JP release, both online and offline modes. I'm buying it for collector's purposes... I am now leaning more and more towards importing the PC version of PSU instead of the PS2 version. Doing that I'd not only play it for the offline story mode of course but I would then also go online for a month or two until the US version comes out, at which point I'd shelve the JP version and go online with the US version (cant believe regions are not connected, but that choice forces me to do that). So anyway, if I end up doing that, I'd love to meet players from here online. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif
