Since Super Ethan was recently revealed,I wondered if anyone has changed their minds about which mode they want to play first, online multiplayer or the story mode.I haven't changed my opinion at all because I already wanted to play story first.

I'll probably set up my account and create characters first, but then I'll go through the story mode. I'm a sucker for classic RPGs, and I've been waiting for a Phantasy Star game with a true story for a long time.

After I'm done though, I'm going online for a LONG time http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I believe he is referring to the fact that Ethan can use all weapons and learn all photon arts, bullet arts, and technics to max level. Hence, he is Super Ethan.

actually Ethan is a super elite, technically. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

anyways I'm playing offline story first because it's an important part of the Gurhal Solar System's history and events that have shaped online's past and present situations, learning more about the races and factions and worlds and cultures, etc. etc., can only be discovered through the offline story.

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/burger.gif

and there are countless benefits to experiencing the offline story first, which will make the online experience and universe even more a part of your character and vice versa. Even the producer recommends it. the offline story mode is not some tacked on add-on. it's a part of the greater whole that makes the online expereince COMPLETE. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

besides, playing almost nonstop, I'm sure I can complete a 40 hour story in 3-4 days, and then after that, online everytime all the time. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

At least "Super Ethan" is better than "SSJEthan" or "SSJEthanroth" or somesuch.

As for me, I still plan on playing the offline mode fully when it releases before going online. I've been waiting nearly a decade for a true story driven offline Phantasy Star RPG - and by god I'm going to savor it.

Its online right away for me with the US version when I get it. I'll be probably be playing the import offline until then, if I go ahead and import it. Since I'll have missed some elements of the story, I'll go back and replay the US offline in between bouts online. At any rate, I dont think knowledge of the offline story is going to impact the online experience all THAT much, and I truly dont have the willpower anyway to keep myself offline to see. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I'm really going to enjoy having a new PS story after all this time, but I have to admit since I stopped going online with PSO GC I have been awaiting online PSU even more, so it comes in a sort of secondary spot for me.

Saner, I'm sorry, but... no.

I can tell you right now that online mode is not going to be part of some grand new storyline. Online mode is going to be, "Isn't it good that that Ethan guy brought peace and happiness and prosperity to the galaxy forever? Let's go beat up some monsters now!" If it doesn't work out that way, you have my permission to beat me up in-game.

(If there's no PvP, haha.)

I'm not really sure what I'll do, but I figure that what will probably happen is that, having gotten the game, I'll install it, play the offline mode obsessively until I get stuck on some ridiculously difficult part, then play the online mode until I get bored and start to do the offline mode again, get stuck, switch back to online, and so on.

I totally agree, it's not like there's some crucial information you need to learn from the story that will make people able to "enjoy online to its fullest." I can learn how to play when I get online, and i could not care less about the characters in offline. I'll have plenty of fun killing stuff with friends. I really don't see what everyone thinks there is in offline that will make the online experience any more enjoyable.

Nothing. I don't plan on playing offline mode as a precursor to online mode in hopes of enhancing the game experience. I'd be just as excited if PSU had no online mode at all. I want a new Phantasy Star RPG - not "Space Diablo".

But that's just me...

For those of you who have been posting about how stupid Super Ethan sounds or that you don't want to play offline nor will you at all, listen up.When Saner said Offline effects online,he wasn't going by just the story,he also meant statwise. If you play offline first and you mess up your character who you want to make as perfect as possible, you'll have to erase them and start over.If you play story first you can get a better understanding of the statistics(new weapons grinding system,Partner Machinery, what stats to focus on,and class levels) so that you can work better on your online character when you make them.

I also think that there is nothing supremely wrong with playing offline, that is,nothing that would make you not want to play it ever.It won't hurt you that bad(unless you think every living moment needs to be spent on your main online character..."MUST MAKE HIM/HER STRONGEST WARRIOR EVER").I'm actually thrilled to play the offline story because of many new things. The story characters are interesting and pull me in.Now that they have voice acting on the offline story you can have more memorable moments with whoever is your favorite character(laughing at Pete, the Partner Machinery, yet not hating him for his high pitched voice).I'm also surprised that I'll get to play as the enhanced Ethan(although I already wanted to play offline first anyways). It'll make it a little bit more fun to play as the originally-less impressive main character,Ethan.

About Super Ethan...I'm almost 100% sure it is just a nickname for right now.

Super Ethan is not his name. it's just Ethan Waber. he is simply all 3 classes at once. which is a cool thing to experience for the offline story.

and you're acting like Final Fantasy is the only series with good stories and pre-made characters, which is not true.

I would actually like to play offline first to engross myself in the story. But I highly doubt i will be able to resist the online while I play through FOURTY HOUR adventure. Now if I could get a week off work and tear through that single player in 3 days (which at 40 hours would be tough), maybe I would.

I voted for the offline simply becausxe I WANT to play it firt and probably will spend a few hours on it before I go online. But I know that online is going to consume most of my time. I'll probably come back to the single player a month or two after I get the game.

it that some kind of inferiority complex? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

I've always been a sucker for storyline, as it makes me feel more immersed in the world. It worked for what storyline there was in PSO, and with PSU being more vast in storyline, I plan to delve into that as well.

I'll probably spend the first few hours or so dealing with the off-line play (to also give me some more choices in Extra mode), and then probably head my way into on-line.

There is another really good thing about playing offline mode first ... With Ethan you can experience all the play-styles naturally and how they work together without worrying about building up this or that. You may find out that you like a HURA type style than a FORA or a RAFO or HUFO type style and you won't have to waste all your time learning that

Oh yeah, like when (STAR OCEAN 3 SPOILERS) Fayt talks about violating that UP3 thing, despite already committing numerous violations of it already because of his RPG Hero Circumstances. And then later on, he's so whiney that his Teen Angst Power destroys an enemy fleet! The enemy ships invaded, Fayt got all upset, and then BOOM!

If Ethan goes anywhere near that, he will be made fun of for much of my online game.

Super Ethan is just a made up nickname, you won't see anyone in the story mode call Ethan that.

he is simply all 3 classes at once without limits to what weapons he can use.

and since he's human, he's well rounded in all categories, having no weaknesses.

Well, the set-up may sound corny, but it could be the best story ever once you get past the beginning(like Tales of Symphonia or Baten Kaitos. In ToS it was "help the Chosen One on her journey to save the world" and in BT it was more like "stop an evil creature from ressurecting",but in the end they both flipped your world upside-down with characters you would never expect to rebel to automatically decieve you with good reason).

Failing that, it could have a cast of characters that can be downright entertaining most of the time, like Tales of Symphonia, Legendia or Eternia*. Great characters can turn a mediocre story into an awesome one.

no matter what they put in the offling, they're going to make online that much better. It's where their bills come from for them so theres no point in making the free aspect of the game better or as good as the online part.

its apples and oranges basically. both modes offer a different flavor of fun.

offline has story mode and extra mode, and online mode is what online players more than likely want the most.

not because it's 'better' but because that's the flavor they enjoy more playing.

It depends.
If the JP version i am importing has the chance to switch to english ( like pso had ) then i would play offline first in the jp version , and then go online while i wait for the eu/us version to release.

If not , i probably wont be able to play story mode in some quite time , because all my friends are getting the game as soon as it is released (US/EU), because if i fall behind ( specially at first, when they will be playing like there was no tomorrow) i wont be able to party with them , or i will make our team get less points wich will slow down us all.
