View Full Version : Will GC PSO be a financial/commercial success?

Take into account these things:
Seperated servers means no more "world wide" PSO play and no more "breaking down the language barriers," however well that went in the past.
No Domestic keyboard meaning almost every US player will be forced to type with the software keyboard and bind shortcut chats to talk. Alas, no more easy access chatting(a major part of the game).
Steep $8.95 per month online charge, limiting its user base from previous versions.
JP being charged less and like before getting somewhat more?(examples=HL can be bought in 3 month blocks, a few items US aren't supposed to have legitimately[v2], and download quests[v2])
Your average Joe and Jane gamer have never heard of PSO.

Yes.

$8.95 a month is a lot. They will make some money off of that.

No.

$8.95 a month is a lot. Only us diehards are willing to pay it, not the masses.

But only half as many people have to pay it for them to break even. And if there are less people playing, that means less maintenence. And that means they get to keep more of the money they charge.

Perhaps. But I honestly don't see the PSO userbase getting high enough at that cost to pay for much of anything. Remember, the running total for the first (or second...) month of play is upwards of $110, and that's not counting the console/memory card/and keyboard.

That and your ISP cost of course.

theyll make some good money off us subscribers. i think they might get their heads together once they see how well it sells. if it does good, then theyll prolly try to push keyboards.

Taking into account, the fact that Sega will charge $8.95 a month pretty much leaves noone a choice, either you pay it and play, or you don't and your stuck off-line. Sega will make a bundle for the first few months considering the fact that markets do tend to change the price, hopefully SEGA will lower the monthly fee. <<PRAYS>> As far as commercialy i dont think it matters much, the new PSO will go by word-of-mouth, current PSO players, in which by the thousands will carry the good word for fellow prospects. So I voted YES. It will succeed. Peace.

1.For one thing. Once the Japanses get the patched version, they will be able to play with us again.
2. Sega said that their will be a 3rd party keyboard at the launch. Or there will be one soon after.
3. $8/95 a month isn't all that bad. Look at Everquest and Earth and Beyond. PSo is one of the cheapest online games I've seen.
4. They will be giving us the same downloadable quest and items. ST isn't stpuid enough to charge us that much more and guve us less.
5. The fact that no one has heard of PSO is our own fault. I've been trying to spread the word to my friends but I can't do it alone.

It will sell just fine.

You think the HL price will vent off the Hardcore PSO gamer? No.

You think the KB will vent off the casual gamer who knows nothing about PSO? Nah.

The ONLY thing that is hurting PSO's release is it's lack of Commericals in the US.

I predict it will sell About 150,000 units in its quarter. But no more than 225,000.

The games gona sell a good 500,000 copies worldwide (EU,US,JP,AU) Which will be a TREMENDOUS success.

First of all, no add-on that was not included with a game has ever been successful. Many gamers will be "scared off" by the idea of buying a $35 BBA/Modem...for just *one* game.

Second, a $8.95/month monthly fee is just about unheard of in the world of console gaming. Very few people out side of the hardcord PSO fans are going to pay that. Heck, many gamers were scarred off by the $3-$5/month that we were charged for PSOv2.

Third, the lack of a keyboard will also scare people off. Methinks many copies of PSO will be returned when casual gamers realize that a mute game of PSO isn't really *that* fun.

It's just too dang expensive to appeal to the casual gamer. You think that Steel Batallion for the XBOX is going to sell? Of course it won't.

This could very well be the greatest game ever created, but not many people will be playing it. It'll have a secure base of hardcore PSO addicts, but it won't get anywhere near the 200,000 users that DC PSO had.

this was a fringe game, on a fringe system...
it'll survive, but not be a smash

I really don't think it will have as much of an impact as the DC one did.

1. The cost of investing in GC PSO is much higher than the cost of getting DC PSO up and running online (adapter and insane monthly fee ((cost is unheard of for a console game.. and it's not even a MMORPG))).

2. The bad reputation PSO has gotten for being a "cheater's paradise" will put people off.

3. No keyboard puts a serious dent in the online aspect.

If you think this game will be a sucess in any way financially you are kidding yourself...

1) It requires the purchase of an add-on to even think about playing it online ($35).

2) There is no way to communicate since there is no keyboard avaliable as of yet in the US.

3) $8.95 per month for a console game?! Are they insane? Earth and Beyond is $10 a month and it's a massive persistent GALAXY of individuals all playing at once.... $8.95 for a hack and slash P2P console game is absurb.

4) Retailers aren't pushing it hard enough since GTA: Vice City, Timesplitters 2, and many other acclaimed titles are lauching around the same time.
