The site doesn't even mention the 360 version yet, they're a tad late on the updates

It is a mistake; I noticed that a while ago. Trust that it's being released on DVD-ROM.

Some companies do make a limited press of CD variations for those who dont have a DVD drive, Unreal Tournament games are all released on DVD nowadays but they STILL do a limited edition CD version for those people who dont believe in technology LOL.

But yeah sega probably having noticed/dont care to change it.

only look at the space you need for when you install the game. and it cost less to print the game on dvd then on normal cds.

I acknowlege what you are saying about it being on DVD, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did get put on CD rom. I mean, the hard-drive isn't even necessary for the ps2, right? So how much data is on that disk anyway? Seems like it would be just another way for them to save money with the least expensive disk format.

I'm sure it will only be 1 DVD. One dual layer disk holds roughly 8.5GB. Once compression is factored in, it's obvious they could easily get over 9GB worth of data onto your harddrive with a single DVD.

right on.
I'll take that as a compliment.
Anyway, I found it:
32MB DRAM of Main System RAM
4MB Video RAM
2MB Audio RAM

Let's see... A standard CD-ROM holds approximately 700 megabytes of data. Phantasy Star Universe is nine gigabytes. Therefore, you would need thirteen CD-ROMs to store the game in the standard CD-ROM format.

EDIT: This may be slightly less due to the compression used in installation files, but it would still be a substantial number of CD-ROMs - far more than is ordinary for most games. Defenitely not a good option for SEGA when they could use two DVD-ROMs instead.

If they used good compression, like was used in Unreal Tournament, they could probably cut it down to a single DVD that would probably not even need to be dual-layer. It would mean a slower install time, but it would allow for a lower prodution cost.

As for comparing PS2 to PC... There is a key difference: PS2 reads the data directly from the disc and never installs. The PC version is the opposite, likely only using the disc for authoriting (if even that) and loading from the harddrive. The save files will be tiny in comparison. But, because it essentially copies the entire disc to the harddrive that is why it requires so much space. A harddrive, as slow as it is, is still faster than a DVD drive for successive reads in different sectors.

even so, they will optimize it so that the console versions will load up at a decent speed even when moving to other sectors.

LOL, Norvekh is talking about a different kind of sector http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Somehow, I don't think you understood what he meant by "sectors."

In any case, this isn't Star Trek. You can't just say "optimize it!" or "compensate!" Reading from a CD, or DVD, will always be slower than reading from a hard drive. Hard drives are simply faster.

Edit: Not to say the PS2 version will load slowly. I'm sure they'll manage to keep the loading times adequately short (especially considering those low-res, blurry textures are so small in size).

Sorry, couldn't resist taking a shot. >.>

well reading from the DVD 100% isn't as slow as people say anyways.

take PSO DC for example. always reading right off the disc and decent load times.

Ether

Dreamcast didn't use DVDs, and I remember on Version 2, where it took about 25 seconds to load every players model. A little optimization by not putting the code on opposite sides of the disc would've helped there

... It's slower than reading of a hard drive. Quite a bit slower, actually. However, be glad we're not still reading game data off floppy discs.

No one's saying the load times will be intolerable. But they will be longer on the PS2 speaking comparatively to the PC version. Take a deep breath, realize no one is telling you to sacrifice your PS2 to the evil PC demons, and quit being so defensive.

well ya'll are the ones comparing them again and again with PC.

Nice Sony-brand DVD-ROM drive for 25 bucks. You can get a no-name one and save $5, but I personally would rather just spend the extra $5 on a brand I know.

Oh wait...ok Im a fool when it comes to computer hardware(not software) Does have a DVD rom drive mean it can read CDs too? I have 2 CD drives, but one of them is for burning CDs. Whats the best CAN DO ALL disc drive?(run CDs, DVDS, Burn CDs, etc)

Kyuu
Aug 8, 2006, 02:11 AM
A DVD-ROM can read CDs as well as DVDs, but can't burn CDs. If you already have a CD-R/RW, as you stated, all you really need is the DVD-ROM anyway. If you only have two bays (places to put CD/DVD drives), then take out the regular CD player and stick the DVD-ROM in. Otherwise, you can have all three in there. Not that there much use for 3 drives in one computer, but hey. Why not?

VioletSkye
Aug 8, 2006, 02:12 AM
I probably wouldn't buy just a DVD ROM drive when you can get one that burns DVD (both +/-R in dual layer) for roughly $10 more.
LiteOn 16X16 Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive - $34.99 (http://clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=CA1547024)
