I'm getting some wierd pixellation on the graphics during the opening movies in PSO. Is it happening to you folks at all or is it just my system and/or game?

I noticed it too. Things looked a little..... harsher, especially in the scenes where it panned Ragol.
Then I realized that it's because whereas the entire opening was done in FMV in the DC versions, it appears to actually be rendered in real-time on the GC version.

No, I mean it really breaks up into big solid color squares. I noticed the "rough" aspect a bit too (especially in the Dragon Appears movie before you fight him) but this is a weird technical failure thing. It doesn't always happen during the same bits either. And so far I've ONLY seen it during the intro movies.
So is it just me?

The video shouldn't be breaking up into coloured blocks at least it doesnt on mine.
The difference with the boss intros and exits are because sonic team added motion blur to them on gc.
To me, all of the Movies actually look better... And I think they are done in real time now as well... But no, you shouldnt have problems like that in the intro movie, if it bothers you, get a new copy, if that copy does the same thing, its your TV.
In fact, try it on a new TV first.

Wow...could it really be the TV that's causing it?? I do have a pretty huge tv and now that I think about it that's more what it looks like; the TV freaking out. It's REALLY bad during the last flight through the buildings for the Episode 1 intro. You can't make out anything on it.
It's no big deal really as it never happens during the game itself but it is a little worrying all the same.
Thanks for the help everyone.

to me it kinda looks like motion blur or the new "bullet time" stuff goin around, looks kinda nice, especially on the photon blasts

Ok, it's NOT the motion blur. I know what you mean about that. This isn't that.
Small sections of the screen pixelate into big solid colored blocks, all squooshed together. It kind of resembles Tetris. It's NOT purposeful as it never happens in the same place twice.

Usually happens when an MPEG is badly encoded... Exchange the game.

Yes, it sounds like your game has bad movie files--must've been a replication error unless you happen to just have really good eyes, as all compressed movies have some amount of "blockiness" or compression artifacts as they're called. You can even see them on some DVDs if they were encoded poorly or if you have a cheap player.

yep same with me. but in multiplayer i noticed that when i fight the dragon w/ my bro, its not all werid like i single palyer.
Real-time? HAHAHAHAHA!!!
When Sonic Team has to cut the amount of polygons per side for splitscreen mode which results in this:

...I can't help but roll my eyes when people make statements like that. Sorry, those opening scenes are nothing more than streamed video, compressed a lot less than on the Dreamcast which results in less fragmentation. There's no way GameCube could handle that stuff in real-time.

Okay, that clears it up. It had the "in-game graphics" look, but I wondered how the hell they'd pulled it off.
...Especially considering that even single-player mode has more popup than the DC versions. There always used to be a bit of magically-appearing boxes, but now other things do it, too. Odd, wasn't the GC one supposed to have slight graphical improvement?
Maybe ST thought that people wouldn't notice, but when you've done 39503840539 forest runs, any slight difference catches your eye :X

Xbox won't have these problems http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif. Game looks great can't wait... I'm jealous of you GC people.

If you're using a TV tuner that connects through your computer, then I'd have to guess that's the problem. It's NOT a problem with the disc itself, if it was the game wouldn't work properly. It looks fine on my display, the movies look nice, but if that's the only problem you're having, I wouldn't be obsessed about it.

Um, ok. Clam down. Deep breaths... Ahh... Wait.. Wait.. .. .. .. .. Ok, that's better..
Now, really, how could you say that? The graphics are a heck of a lot better than they were on the Dremacast version. The amount of things appearing on the horizon is *exactly the same* in Episode 1, and I haven't noticed this "extreme popup" in Episode 2 either. And if you can still say that the graphics haven't improved over the Dreamcast version, then I'll come to your house to give you a detailed lecture about the differences. Are you sure you're playing the GameCube version?

Sorry, RMR, but I agree. The graphics defninitely look worse on the GC and the pop up is a LOT worse. And those in game movies are a joke. They look like a 30 yr old filmstrip.
Anyway, I exchanged the game and I still get that breakup. SO it's clearly something with my hardware and not with the game itself, otherwise I imagine it'd be happening to a lot more people. I'm guessing it most likely is the TV or the connection.
-too bad my xbox freezes all the time or I'd get that one MP

I'd argue this. If you ignore the lights flickering on the ruins doors, the polygon flicker of monster blood vs. terrain (this tends to happen a lot in Episode I stages, particularly Caves 2 with the water), and monster blood conflicting with lighting effects (VERY blatant in the Temple), then yes, I guess you're right.
The amount of things appearing on the horizon is *exactly the same* in Episode 1,
No, actually, this is improved a bit on GameCube. Proof enough is that lengthy room in Forest 2... that area no longer "pops-in" like it used to. Also, if a friend is way further out and opens a door in a room you haven't reached, you no longer see a blank background like before. The terrain rendering distance is improved just a bit.
and I haven't noticed this "extreme popup" in Episode 2 either.
...however, the rendering distance isn't far enough to prevent the really blatant pop-up in the Jungle Area North and Mountain stages. I like how the mountains in the far back just suddenly "blink" in when you reach a certain distance. This is probably why they primarily had in-door dungeons, because the Seabed looks great. Fogging and/or draw-in would have helped considerably. The problem is that PSO uses a segmented-area loading system, a environment rendering engine that should have STAYED abandoned back in the early 32-bit era, with games like Panzer Dragoon, Daytona USA, etc. The pop-up in PSO GC isn't nearly as bad as the two aforementioned games, but it shouldn't be in there in the first place.
