Nice to see a little hype start up.

Loved this part of the preview:

We're curious to go through a bit more of the game to see what the experience is like when we're fully tricked out with a mag and the ability to synthesize things. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

There aren't any mags, PMs have replaced them. Gamespot is just stupid. >_> "Rangers are a blend of the two, possessing solid melee skills but also having the ability to cast some technics. "

Wow, just wow, gamespot. So many people will be miss informed. Did they even look at the screen while some else played?!

Not defending Gamespot, but Ethan does have the ability to use Technics while a Ranger or Hunter (obviously not as well as he would as a Force though), unlike his online counterparts http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Still that 'Rangers are a blend of the two' comment is awful.

Gamespot has always been stupid, and always will be. They made a few other false statements as well. I doubt the xbox 360 version will be released in october like the PC and PS2 versions. They also said "Though not as powerful as the sword, the gun-and-saber set is faster and lets us use a special "photon arts" attack." That suggests that swords don't have photon arts. Though I can't know for sure since I haven't actually played PSU yet, I'm pretty sure swords have photon arts.

Swords do have Photon Arts, yeah. Can't remember the exact names off hand, but the currently known ones all end in 'Break', and the first Photon Art for swords is 'Tornado Break' IIRC.

Meh. It's pretty obvious that a guy who hasn't kept on PSU news reviewed it. I wouldn't call him stupid or anything, it just looks like he didn't put that much time into playing it and assumed too much. Someone should point out this site to the guy or something.

*growls @ gamespot* They gave it such a terrible preview, they made it sounds exactly like PSO while somehow making it sounds increadibly boring @_@

He had alot of negative things to say, which bothers me. I mean, it's his opinion and he has every right to say bad things about the game, but not when he obviously knows so little about it. I doubt he ever even got to ultimate difficulty in PSO.

You're probably right, probably because Gamespot editors have more than just Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe on their plate to cover. Of course their information isn't going to be deadly accurate. It's all based on the three or four hours they were able to devote to the game before they had to move on to the next. That's just the way things work.

Wow, sounds like gamespot is screwin everything up.

Sounds like gamespot played the single player version, on the premierre disc there were no PA's for the sword and ethan could use anything remember so they could play as a force ranger type.

Well, if you guys think this was a bad review, here's another one by IGN. It's more positive and they know what they're talking about. And they actually get the names right.

Hunters are strictly physical fighters, while forces are the opposite and rely mainly on casting different technics (pronounced techniques). Rangers are a blend of the two, possessing solid melee skills but also having the ability to cast some technics.Yeah, this guy obviously didn't actually play as the ranger class, or he simply relied on his experience with Ethan without realizing that Ethan is an exception in his ability to use facets of all three classes (though one would wonder why he found himself unable to use technics as a Hunter then?).

This, coupled with other previously mentioned inaccuracies and his seeming inablity to get past what (very little of) PSO he experienced, gives me a rather low opinion of this guy's report on it. It's nice for PSU to recieve some attention, but it'd be much nicer to have a competant person doing the article.

Who's the girl behind Ethan in the first picture? Some random NPC you have to escort?

Thanks for the link, that was a much better and more accurate preview. It's good to hear about it from someone who knows what they're talking about.

At first I was set on getting the 360 version of PSU. But ever since I read that preview article on Gamespot about how it chugs and stuff I was becoming scepticle. Now I have just decided to get the PC version. Although my PC more then powerful enough to handle it, a part of me just feels that it is meant to be played on a console. Since the PS3 will have the PS2's emotion engine in it the game won't be in high res since it's not running on emulation software like the 360 does. So basically it's the PC version for me.

P.S. Does anyone in here use a usb controller to play the game on their PC? If so, could you tell me about it?

I just bought a Logitech USB Gamepad, but.....people say to get the Xbox360 gamepad for like 40 bucks, my Logitech is 20 bucks.......and the other thing is I went to Gamestop and the only had a Logitech Gamepad so I couldn't buy a Xbox360 gamepad.......both of those work well

the preview at IGN is definitly much more accurate and full in detail because they broke down each and every part of the three missions. on gamespot, they pretty much MENTIONED the three missions and told us all information, we pretty much already know.

wait um what did IGN say? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

they did say the first episode was like rescuing Lumia.

and the 2nd episode is the first mission as a Guardian, I think involving Remlia and Karam's farm.

but whats the 3rd episode? oh right the Relics mission with the scientist? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

For some reason I'm glad the 360 version won't be released in oktober...

They say that hunters are the main melee class, that forces are the main technic class, and (check this out) that rangers are a blend of the two, both "solid in melee" and "able to use technics." What the crap happened to them being freakin' RANGERS. They use guns people... c'mon now...

I know tell me about it. That's the same thing I was thinking. I don't ever remember Rangers being all that great with blades in PSO.

Honestly, GameSpot's PSU coverage has always been pretty horrible.

From the way the guy wrote the preview, he makes it sound like this is how the overall game is going to like. All I got to say is screw him. This isn't going to reduce my hype for this game one bit.

I find this to be the most interesting part of the preview. If you click on the download link and you aren't registered, you will see this:

"Download: 169_phantasystaruniverse_x360_gp4_082106"

Notice the _x360_ in the url for the download? I wonder if they mislabled that because it would be interesting to see that IGN has a crappy looking preview and Gamespot has a nice looking version.

Their videos are from the 360 version. That's why the backgrounds are all blurry in the videos.

Actuially they are kind of right because RAs are a lot more like FOs now!

And anyone can use any gun.

*Bitch-slaps GameSpot, kicks it in the nuts, pushes it over, and, finally, kicks it in the small of the back before walking away with a grim look on his face.*

...Bastard. Incorrect information pisses me off. Sega should stop letting them preview their games, or something.

I'm watching the highest quality vids. Its the cloest thing to having the game play on your own TV and there is a slight blur effect as mentioned in preview articles. To be fair, its not as bad as its made out to be.

Eclypse
Aug 27, 2006, 09:28 PM
I know, people make it seem likes its the worst blur they've ever seen when it's not worse than a beta grade game that is in early developement. Hell I've seen completely finished products on PS2 look 50000 times worse.
