View Full Version : What if Spacship travel between planets was more immersive (

AAAAH now don't throw pillows, this is just a thought.

PSU already looks great the way they use brief cutscenes to show a spaceship quickly travelling from one planet/colony to another. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

but I was just imagining if we could actually ride in the spaceships, you know like ummm FF11's airship rides (with no fees of course)
except of course we would be in a beautiful spaceship, kind of like a space cruise. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif and we could walk around, do maybe some minigame thing in the ship, or sit down and wait for arrival, etc. etc.

and looking outside the windows you would see stars and travel streaks of light and stuff like that. and then one it enters the atmosphere/whatever, you would see the world and stuff outside (it would help to switch to 1stFPV for this if you wanna look through the windows better) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif you know a soothing, immersive 10 minute ride. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

I thought of this cause in trailers we seen cutscenes of Karen and Ethan talking and looking at the outside surroundings through the window and stuff like that. And that feels quite natural. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

but ya it's already great the way it is with at least that spaceship travel cutscene. and people can even skip that if they wanted to. but what's the fun in skipping it? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

besides most people would rather have travel be quick and impatient stuff like that. so ya it works better the way they have it as it is now. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

besides looking at the technology, those gate rings look like they gatejump ships really fast, so I guess the speed and all wouldn't give us much time to enjoy the ride anyways. Looking at those gate rings, I always think of Sonic 2 special stage getting rings for emeralds. maybe we might see Tails looping around those warp paths for rings. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

ya it's fine how they have it. I'm just glad there is a greater sense of travel this time instead of 'just teleport this and that'. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I would like it to be more like Starfox http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Would be so cool that before go to a stage , you had to shoot at SEED with your spaceship..

::throws pillows at Saner::

I was hoping for some way to have that sort of 10-min ride though, or at least have an option on the ship itself to instantly warp yourself into the next world if you dont want to sit the ride out. The way its done already though is good, no needing to wait a certain amount of time for it to come/go and then waiting extra minutes for it to fly tyo the next planet.

There was a glitch at EP2 ship where you could see the outer side of the ship and some nebula and a star http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
But if it's only 10minutes, I like it:)

I hated those stupid airship rides in FFXI, it was the biggest waste of time and money I ever spent. I went all the way to Kazham and found out that people STILL couldn't play the game properly.

Short CGI cutscenes will do just fine for me.

No thanks. I agree with the above poster.

When you first play FFXI, it seems like a wonderful idea to help with immersion... But after months of riding airships, you just see it as a big time waster, especially when you missed the airship and had to wait through that 10~ minutes just for it to get back. It became just a short 'break' for people to go afk and do other things (much like many other 'events' in FFXI).

cruise control afk on the docks ftw~!

I think i would love to have a chat with my party/friends in a space ship riding us to the next battle ground but agree with the posters above nothing close to ff11 otherwise youll hate it in the near future^_^

With how PSU is focused, i'd rather the CGI cutscene, if it was like FFXI/WoW i'd probably like having the time to communicate and do other things...because everyone knows that once my character lands, talking will be minimal at best, and will speak only on the occasional weird/stupid comment or effectively planning something at the half-way points.

One of PSO's best features was how it didn't force you to waste time travelling between areas. Many MMOs use that as a way to keep you playing and paying longer. I'll take a 5 second loading screen over a 3 minute walk/airship ride/whatever anyday. My lack of patience for this sort of thing was one of the reasons why I quit WoW after only getting to level 23.

yeah, it seems as though all online PS games more or less dont have these time sinks as the others do. I never played WoW so I wouldnt know, but alot of the time in FFXI, it seemed that you kept 'waiting to play'.

My friends would get annoyed with that. "Hey Pengfish, meet us over at Clyez!"

"Okie dokie, let me just hop on the spaceship and I'll see you in ten minutes so I can feel like I'm REALLY riding in a spaceship that couldn't possibly travel instantly."

You sir, ma'am, thing, worry me. Your 2000+ posts is also increasingly worrying, are they all similar to this?

I agree with everyone else. CGI will do me nicely. I'm just after some juicy PSU gameplay, if I wanted spaceships i'd play something else.

I see the spaceship thing as a good idea, but sitting around in that spaceship can certainly get old, and I just don't see that many people wanting to sit around after the first dozen or so times. It sounds like a fun idea, but...well, the way PSU is probably won't be suited for long spacehsip rides.

Whatever conversations and minigames that would be on the spaceship could easily be done on the surface.

Besides...maybe the spaceships in the Gurhal system are fast enough that loading the inside of said ship is pointless anyway. I mean, if we're talking about less than 10 seconds of loading and cutscenes...yeah.

Another classic "heelo i am saner!!!!" suggestion. Once more, novelty. The first time, it might seem nice and "immersive." After that, it's just, quite simply, boring. This is just an inhibition to quick travel. Such a system might work out better in a game like Final Fantasy XI, where you would have to run across the entire landscape to get somewhere anyways (yet another one of Phantasy Star Universe's advantages; you don't have to watch your character run for ten minutes to get somewhere), but in PSU, where everything is designed so that you can easily get between areas in a reasonable amount of time (teleportation, "instantaneous" planetary travel), such a system is far less economical.

Plus, I have no patience, and don't necessarily want to spend my time stuck on a small, enclosed spaceship with fifty annoying idiots.

Some of my favorite times on FFXI were taking the boat. Nothing beat the sight of seeing a dozen people rush up to the deck after only to get annhilated by a Sea Horror or pirates. Of course a lot of the times it would just be a plain old boat ride. Which was exactly like the airship ride, boring.

So unless we're going to get to actually pilot the ship, or have some kind of encounters on the ride EVERY time, than no freaking way.

Quoted for emphasis. Having recently quit Final Fantasy XI as of a month ago, shortly before I left, I rode the ferry between Selbina and Mhaura which turned out to be empty. It probably has something to do with no one wanting to sit on a virtual boat for 15 minutes anymore, because virtual boat rides aren't entertaining after more than a handful of attempts.

LOL *at Sinue's post* good reply.

Um, i prefer quick travel too, no long boat/ship trips. A special ship to ship battle mission would be cool though.

Could you imagine episode III if you were an arkz and had to walk to each mission location?

Aug 27, 2006, 10:40 PM
my 2 sents: It would be fun as a 1-time thing. Maybe the first time you go to a planet you could choose to ride there yourself but that might even be annoying doing it only once. I think there should be a mission/mini quest that involves you on the spaceship. Thay would have to make it fun in multiplayer though.

I guess I'd preffer just cutscenes for interplanetary travel. (can you skip the cutscenes?)

im thinking this style is way better than waiting to travel to another location. i rather be quick and get to my location than waiting like 10 mins for my ride like i did in final fantasy. man that was a waste of 10 mins to me.

Being stuck on a space ship with members of the former PSO community, and with a great majority of the members here, would simply be hell. Every time, guaranteed. It would also mean Sega would get a nice cancelation notice from me.

As an option it sounds nice and I wouldnt mind, but repeatedly; no thanks. Traveling in FFXI was a hassle in itself by the time your at camp someone has to eat. I don't want to see any of that ever again lol.
