View Full Version : Someone wanted a count on gender

So, to appease my fellow PSO-World users, i am making this poll since i know someone asked for it. Plus, I am a bit curious on the topic now myself. Let's hope i dont screw up making this, my first poll.

Here is the question:

What gender are you, and what gender will your main character be?

Blueblur
Aug 27, 2006, 10:13 PM
My first character is going to be a male, but I'll eventually make female characters. I usually like telling other players I'm a dude from the outset. I don't want another guy "warming up" to me. lol!

I only play as HUnewearl's on PSO and I figure why mess with a proven formula on PSU. Even though HUnewearl isn't an official title on PSU, I still think the Newman female will be refered to like this by the vets of the series.

All I've done, is play nothing but male characters through all PSOs. PSU ain't gonna be any different.

Im male and Im gonna remake my Hunewearl on PSU but this time im gonna raise it as a Ranger and when I get to expert class Im going to go with whatever is like a Ranger mixed with a Force.

Im just hoping that most of the people that were sitting in the lobby on Apetite 1-1 before I logged out today don't move to the 360 version of PSU. They were calling everyone with female characters gay and stalking them around the server. They were all level 20 something Ramars.

I just like getting in character XD I usually have one female character though http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif For my feminine side XD Its a game so I don't see any big problems with gender confusion, not like I go online to see if I find someone to date. If I see I get along with someone, the topic on who is male or female somehow comes up.

My thoughts exactly. I usually make a male character to start out, but I don't normally play female characters since it always seems a little weird to me. Well, I play them all the time offline, but not onlines...

Anyway, yeah, if and when I make a female character, I'm definately going to be strait-up about my gender. Since I'll be on the XBox 360, there will likely be a lot less, uh... I don't remember the word, but it's not "explaining"... Damn you dictionary.com! Why'd you have to go crazy on me... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif Anyway, yeah, the voice thing. I won't, like, be using any filters or anything, so there really shouldn't be too many questions about gender. At least, I hope not!

Females in PS games generally have different stats than male characters and people play as them because it fits their play style.
In PSO the Hunewearl was basically a Battlemage.

Gender: Male. In pso i had a RAmarl and that was neat mostly cause of stats, but in PSU i'm going to make a Male ranger cause i am a guy and i like guns. I will also have a Female Beast ranger character for the calange cause i played as a ranger in pso and it would be kinda fun, and if i was playing online with my Female Beast character i would tell the people in the team i was about to join stright up that i'm dude so there would not be any confusion.

The way I see it - males tend to put the female personification on things which are imporant to them, things they take pride in, or things which they respect. Boats, cars, planes, all often have female personification to them. Forces of nature, like the behavior of the ocean or a hurricane which can be devistating and uncontrollable are often refered to as being female.

To me.. my character data is imporant, and I can get a great deal of satisfaction and pride out of how I raise that character. So for me, I tend to put the female personification on my character data. That data actually having a female form is just the next logical step in that personification.

Though I'll have a mixture of genders and races - most of my characters will be female.

I've never understood why people give inanimate objects genders. I mean, why they used gender-based pro-nouns for them. One time, I ws at an aquarium-type place, and I asked this girl why she called a sea urchin "he", and she flipped out on me, saying that "Men are always calling their boats and stuff 'she'!", or something, and I was like "Ok, whatever, I don't do that, and it doesn't make sense to me."... Well, I would've said that, but she "Hmph!"ed at me and walked away before I could anything but "Ok, well, not me..." out. Some people are crazy as hell.

NDkEwL
Aug 28, 2006, 12:04 AM
All right, first off, Jinto, yes, you asked what is the male to female ratio, and i took it a step further to ask what the MAIN character of everyone will be. The one they will be playing the most and such. I know people are going to make multiple characters, i was just questioning the most important character to everyone.

I am male and have been making HUmars for PSO just because all the Newman were female, and i didn't feel like being distracted ::cough:: but finally, newman hunters are available, and even though my HUmars were all sword users, i will be using daggers and claws which means i might have well have used HUnewearls.

There is nothing wrong with using a different gender than themselves for a game since stats are different with gender, i just like feeling that i have a physical parallel in a game, plus more than two-thirds of my friends are chicks, so another chick in my life is not going to help me feel manly.

Male/Male.

I'm torn though. Whenever I play a game, I make either one of two characters: A recreation of my favorite old D&D character, Rogan, or a fantasy version of myself. The former I do in most RPGs and MMOs, and the latter is for games that have very robust character creation asthetics (such as City of Hereos or Earth and Beyond). The only game that I didn't follow this patern with is PSO, in which I made my grey-haired polearm master Edgar.

Basicly, I can't decide which of those three I want to make as my main character for PSU! Oh, the humanity!

To me, it sounds like an old centuries-old custom. (Like maybe back in the day, men thought of their ships, etc like (anatomically incorrect) women that served them and were pleased to do it, or perhaps the men had to leave their women for their ships or weapons during wartime and they had to think of SOMETHING as their companion...)

I love how the male population is so oblivious to how many female gamers there are. I attend MLGs (in case you don't know, that's Major League Gaming) and have noticed a larger amount of Female players on Halo instead of SSBM.

From my history of friends (female of course) most female gamers play RPGs, FPS, MMOs, music games, and Simulation (sims I don't consider a game http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif). I've heard that the percentage is about a 60:40 with men out numbering in those categories, and I see it as true.

Sports games, fighting games, RTS, racing are more male dominant.

I'm a male and making a male character, to me, when I play RPG's I always try and make a "role" for my character which is an extension of me in a video game environment...I DON'T role play at all but I'll never feel "connected" to playing a female character in an online game...offline I will probably make a female just for the hell of it, but online is a different story.

Although Sinue is right, most people add personification to objects but usually those people are enthusiats of said object, I never looked at my computer and said "isn't she a beaut?" but more like "My PC is awesome" that may change if I ever go heavy into building and knowing everything about cars for instance...but most likely it will not happen for a long time.

Oh dear.... /sigh

That's one of the things that bothers me about proportion sliders. At least that should be a hint as to who is actually a male playing a female. >.<

What about the guys who make less-than-E-cup females? (I'd be one of these but I'm not cross-gendering online)

ahahhahaha thats funny, in a way celethalion i bet your right about this. im sure most male players including myself will most likely make their female characters to have features similar to Maya. But hey what can you do.

Not all guys who play female chars are perverts or sexists....I'm sure quite a few will play female Newmans because they have cool stats if playing a FO. Or some might just want something they've never played before. Some people make a bigger deal out of this then it has to be. I really think gender roles are pointless.

Im a male, definitley making a male character ofcourse.

I remember one time on XBOX PSO, there was a female force in a battle server. I dont think the mage had a headset on cause everytime someone talked, the mage didnt respond with text or anything. So two random guys were deciding whether is was male or female. Finally one of them made up their mind and started treating the mage as a female and all of a sudden "Ayo, my bad i, my headset wasnt plugged all the way in".

I'll admit that my main in PSO was a HUnewearl, but that was only because there was no HUnewm. Back in the original series we had Nei, Rika, and Mieu (even though she's an android). I loved those characters, and the idea of the Numan.
That's why in PSU I will be a male Newman Hunter.
I know not all guys who play females are perverts, obviously not, but I've heard plenty of comments to affirm it.

The thing is, I treat every "female" character as a male until proven otherwise (in an online environment), I know girl gamers are out there, but I won't treat you like one until I know you are one.

In my case, I'm a straight male, making a female ranger caseal... as my main.

I would rather spend 1000 hours looking at some cute female avatar then some random male one.

As my secondary I am making a male hunter, to recreate my old pso humar.

lotte brings up a good point, regardless, i am in the same boat as Celethalion, except in PSO since Dreamcast, i have been making HUmars because they were so balanced and I didn't feel like making a HUnewearl because of my desire to actually want to smack monsters instead of admiring the flying kick moves (I am a daggers fan, though my end game weapon was always a Chain Sawd)

WHY ISN'T IT OCTOBER YET!

I tend to prefer female characters although I also go with more ambiguous characters as well. (Ergo things like slender, with a helmet/mask combination) I do play as male characters occasionally, and more often depending on the game, but frankly male characters tend to be more centered around just smacking the hell out of the enemy rather than blasting away with spells or ranged weapons. Female characters also tend to be quicker, lighter, and have more even stats. I feel that's how I would be in a real world situation as I personally couldn't rely on my strength but instead my agility and abilty to ascess the situation and solve the problem using means other than hand-to-hand combat.
