View Full Version : Shimmering text issue on PC PSU.

I noticed some people have an issue with shimmering text. I had a bit of it myself, though I noticed something while playing with display settings... look at Ethan's name on the bottom left for each screen.

Here is the game with Anisotropic Filtering set to "Application Controlled":

Now, here is the same thing with Anisotropic Filtering set to "Off":

And here is the game with Anisotropic Filtering set to "16x":

Notice the difference? With AF set to "Application Controlled", the text gets jacked up. Set it to something you want, and the problem seems to be non-existant, at least on my Nvidia GeForce 6600GT card. Note that Anti-aliasing does not seem to be supported, as the graphics get really flaky and glitchy if you try to force it. I also have vertical sync set to on (I hate screen tearing).

Anisotropic filtering does make the 3D stuff shimmer less, BTW. How far you want to take it is up to you, though I see little difference between 4x and 16x.

If you mean those little blue things they look part of the game

Wow so that was the problem? I thought it had something to do with the resolution or installed fonts.
Looks all nice and smooth now. Thanks!

Strange that something like anisotropic filtering would affect this. Oh well.

Does this happen on everyones PC or just a minority? It could have something to do with graphics cards but it might be something that happens to everyone. If that's the case then I'll have to play around with the settings myself. Is it easy to change settings or do you have to exit the game to change it?

I didn't see a difference...

It's easy to see that in the first picture, the text is 'fuzzy', while in the second two pictures it's much sharper.

Say, is there a way to take screenshots provided by the game engine? I tried pressing Print Screen, it doesn't seem to do anything. Shift+Printscreen seems to make the window blank out for a split second, but again, there doesn't seem to be any file output.

At the bottom left the white writing (I think it's katakana) above Ethan's stats. The first image has ugly symbols and the other 2 have symbols that look fine.

the change isn't too big but I assume in online when theres lots of people talking you will eventually see some letters/characters that look illegible.

You can't see that big a difference because it's a still picture, so it's hard to see the shimmering effect Parn is referring to. The point is, if you're having a problem with it, Parn has provided the solution. If you're not having a problem with shimmering text, then don't worry about it.

And yes, PSU looks very smexy on PC. Very glad I have a PC that can run it well. Sega just needs to hurry up and give it to us. x_x

I don't have the PC version myself but apparently Print Screen takes a screenshot and dumps it in a folder in the install folder (Presumably Program Files/Sega/Phantasy Star Universe/Screenshots).

Anybody got any idea how to fix this with Radeon cards?

Well here's what my text looks like now. As you can see some letters are in bold and the "t"s are messed up. It all started a little after I got a program my friend used called ATI Tray Tools. The text displays the same weird way when I turn the application off, and I don't know what the deal is.

Here's how my text used to look before. As you can see all the letters look nice and even. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it still gives me the same arbitrary bold stuff.

I have the environment data if that is needed for further questions.

Results page, nothing wrong before I used ATI Tray Tools

Load Data screen with ATI Tray Tools, nothing wrong.

Room text with ATI Tray Tools, nothing wrong.

Same text as above in a different position with ATI Tray Tools, text goes crazy.

The same thing happens when I shut down ATI Tray Tools.

Incorrect. Screenshots is stored on user/My Documents/SEGA/Phantasy Star Universe/Screenshot.

No, PrintScreen dumps the screenshot into a folder in My DOcuments. The SEGA one.

Hello!

May I know how can I smooth out the text, for my name and lobby menu and the bottom of the screen? I looked at some screenshots and some shots have very smooth and nice text while the others look like mine, pixelated and all...

Thank you!!!

Wow, thanks Parn -- and thanks Tycho for bumping this up (or I never would have seen this)!

I was -just- wondering about this last night, now I know how to fix it. Sweet!
