Im planning on getting back into the phantasy star world with PSU and to maximize the experience decided to buy a controller for my PC. Which one do you think is the best controller for this game?

Im getting an xbox 360 controller, because it's got the same button layout as a PS2 controller.

XBox360 pad with a little configuring with XBCD feels fantastic with PSU. I'll not play it with anything else.

I was originally going to use a PS2 > USB connector until I played PSU on the PS2 and didn't like the placement of the analog sticks for this type of game.

I also tried it a bit earlier today on my Saitek P2500 pad and it didn't feel too bad either, but I much prefer the XBox360 controller for comfort and layout.

Drivers for xbox 360 controller for windows.
Microsoft drivers for 360 controller for windows are bugy/unresponsive but controller itself is superb.
People made their own:
http://xbcd360guide.50webs.com/guide.html

I have 360 controller and use XBCD (custom drivers).
Site also has video to help with installation so you shouldn't have any problems.

has anyone tried the xbox 360 controller on the PC for PSU yet? I wanted to know if you could set the control pad to cursor movement while still having the analog stick for movement.

Do you need to buy a special xbox360 controller? or just a regular one and it will plug in to the PC USB port?

They should both work on PC since description for wirless controller says "windows xp sp1 required."
I have wired version and I did try it out w/ PSO BB. Felt exact same thing as DC controller (in a good way) but even better comfort.
Bought mine at K-mart for $34.

I have a Logitech Dual Action at the moment, but I'm starting to get rather tired of the PlayStation 2-esque layout... I may pick up one of those Xbox 360 Windows Controllers soon.

It's easy, and pretty much like every other game's controller setup. There's a list of actions, and you assign buttons to those actions.

Don't worry about it.

I just did some research. The XBOX360 Wired controller is supposedly the only one that works with the PC. Also the XBOX360 controller for windows is the exact same as the XBOX360 controller, the only difference is it comes with a CD for your drivers. At best buy they sell the CD version for +5 bucks more when microsoft says they should be sold for the same price. Just get the normal controller since you can get the contents of that CD from http://www.microsoft.com for free.

How is everyone's controllers configured? I have a wired 360 controller and "Default Buttons 2" seems to be closest to what I was going for, but, it doesn't seem that there is any use for the analog triggers? What would be closest to the PS2's default layout?

And it doesn't seem like I can map the big Xbox button to anything no matter what drivers I use.

The wireless doesn't connect to PC.

I'd recomend the 360 controller since most other PC game pads Don't feel like cheap crap.

I purchased the Xbox 360 controller this past Christmas with a $50 gift card for Best Buy that I got and I am extremely pleased with the purchase. It responds perfectly and works great with racing games and adventure games which happened to be why I purchased it in the first place. I use the normal Microsoft driver at defaults and it is very accurate and responsive. I had a driver issue when it updated at first but I simply re-did the diagnostics and calibrations and it hasn't bugged out since. I find it is the second most comfortable controller I've ever used, following the GameCube controller.

I just wish Force Feedback worked as it would then be essentially perfect.

I'm going to use ... I think this thing says "Game Elements Gemini: Recoil (It jus has a retractable USB cord). I used it for PSO. This controller has a PS2 layout so I hope it optimizes well with the PC setup.

Had same problem w/ regular M$ drivers. Because triggers are 'pressure sensitive' they dont function well in games (cant assign them as buttons). XBCD will fix all that and more. You wont have ur leet pressure sensitive software but they will function as buttons.
Plus it makes analog sticks MORE precise and less twichy.
As for wireless controller, it needs Windows Media Edition XP. Just get wired version its just as good.

How difficult was it for you guys to configure your Xbox 360 controllers to PSU using XBCD? What did you had to do exactly to get it all correct? Did you had to install and use ControlMK and figure out how to configure that as well?

This is true. Also the 360 button in the middle that currently doesn't do anything on the PC will be put to use when Microsoft releases Vista. They plan to make the button open up your 360 dash on your monitor just like it does for the console.

How did you config it? I have adjusted mine so
back = chat
start = menu
L = Lock-On Camera, Turn Page Left
R = Change Weapon, Turn Page Right
I have left out the turn page left/right dedicated buttons (do we need them)

also i've left the putton to put the cam overhead and the puttons that are unassiged int he options (no idea what they do).

I'd like to use the L trigger for something though

Definitely have to disagree with you there. 360 controllers are basically a modified, sleeker, more comfy version of the awesome Dreamcast controllers.

The only controller that may have been comparably comfy was the GC controller, but that thing's button layout was terrible for anything other than Mario or Mario Kart, IMO.
