I keep getting this exact same problem. Also, it will occasionally come up with this error message:
"Alert Message:
The certificate doesn't exist.
Note:
Please verify on the calendar screen
that the time and date are correct."
Only problem is... The time and date ARE correct. That's come up about three different times, in no specific pattern. There's been a minor FEW times where I've been able to access the website through my GC. But then it loaded really slow, and didn't even finish loading. I got the HL purchase page to come up once. But it also loaded very slowly and not even fully. Then it would give me that URL cannot be retrieved BS if I tried to go to any other sites. I ended up getting online with my comp and buying one, and I haven't tried to acess it though my GC, yet. Can anyne else help? I've been pissing myself over this game for almost a year now, and if I can't play online... Then I can't garuntee that everyone in my general vicinity will live through this day.

Scratch that. I bought one online, then clicked online game. I went ahead and put in all my info, then it loaded, got DNS, then it showed the lobby select screen. Except no options came up. It just sat there, showing the lobby and nothing else. I let it sit there for a long time and nothing happened. I pushed buttons and still nothing happened. Now what!?

K, nevermind, I got it fixed. Buy yer HL through your computer, then turn off your GC, and your comp, too, if you use both at the same time when playing yer GC online. Blow on everything on yer GC, clean the PSO CD, then plug everythging back in and turn it all on. That's what I did, then it worked. Of course, everything is laggy as bloody hell online, and I don't have a KB, but hey, it's a start, hm?

it says in the instruction book. [i can't remember the URL off the top of my head]. look in the section that talks about purchasing the hunter's license.
i got the same errors, then I reset my router [turned it off and on] and everything worked fine. i could purchase the hunters license and play perfecly well.

I'm sorry I don't have anything to add to help solve the dilemma, but this is better put in Tech Support.
And for further reference, what type/model is your router?
