Enemy weaknesses?

Is it just me or do enemies also have an attack type weakness? The nano dragon type creatures on palum seems to take less damage to melee than they do to ranged attacks. I'm pretty sure it's not elemental weakness either cause I'm using an earth gun against them (fire) and my melee is neutral.

It might just be that while its not exactly an elemental weakness, they have less resistance to it which could possibly add more damage..
