This is strange. I noticed that the 'ghosts' are still in the final version.

but look at this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFBuFRtJmvM

it looks like in populated areas, players themselves become 'solid metal/stone people' unless you get close to them then the game tries to load their actual model, clothes and colors. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

does this happen often online?

does this graphical substitution also affect your party members when in the city/outposts, etc.? what do you think about it?
Just wondering. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Probably has a lot to do with video settings as far as the PC version is concerned.

It happens, those "metal" people are placeholders until the game loads the player information.
And yeah, ghosts are everywhere, are you scared? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

so like if you turn the camera away from a group of people and turn it back to view them, they reset as those metal ghosty things until the game renders them again? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

thats strange. I guess that's better than invisible players that don't appear until they are loaded or something.

this might be confusing though. confusing a npc ghost for a player at times and vice versa. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

No no, once the character models have loaded they'll stay that way, they wont just revert to default models if you look away. The only way they'll default is if you're not in a party together and you run off untill they're completely out of site in like... another area.

Not really, they look completely different, and seeing as the ghost dissapear once you get close.....

You can turn the "npc ghosts" off anyway.

Well that and the whole "character name hovering over head" thing would probably make it hard to confuse a player with an NPC. But nothing surprises me anymore.

there is an ACTUAL in-game option to turn the 'ghosts' off??? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/pizza.gif http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/ducky.gif http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/sprite.gif

If it is the first time you see that person, yes, they will appear without detail. RAM. If your PC were to hold the character data of every single player, it would go crazy.

How to explain this.. a computer doesnt want to hold any information it doesnt have to. If you never see a certian player, why should it have its data? When you run into that player it needs to have that data, so it will take a few nanoseconds to load it, it will then stay in its memory for a certain amount of time. If that information isnt used within that time, it will then discard that information. Why would it hold on to something it doesnt need?

Computers can do all of this in nanoseconds. I deal with networking, and when computers talk to each other they remember the IP and MAC address, but only for a split second, if the computers dont talk again with each other in a nanosecond or so, it's then discarded.

This is all happening on a very fast paced level where you shouldnt even bother to try and understand.

In short, if youre around that player, it will keep its info, if youre not, it wont, simple as that.

The faster your computer and depending on how fast the server can talk to it, the faster the character detail will load.

oh ok. well I noticed in actual missions ppl are a brief blue light until they are fully loaded,

but I never seen these metal/clay models unless you're at a populated city or outpost. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

My guess they are the same thing, but intead of the grey, its blue, but on the backside of operations, its the same thing.

actually no the metal effect takes longer to load their model than the blue light, I noticed this a lot from the video I posted here, and for example the instant the dragon boss battle is loaded online.

the blue light only lasts like 3-5 seconds, while the metal models in the cities and outposts take like triple that amount for some to load and you notice that player had to move closer to some people in order for the game to load their models quicker. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

well it's not a problem but it's neat how they used this method instead of the invisible method other massive RPGs use to sustain framerate and stuff. this coupled with the npc ghosts, does a pretty good job at providing a populated atmosphere. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif
