question about importing to PS2 [Archive]

I am looking to import the PS2 version of PSU from play-asia.com as well as w/e is needed in order to play on my U.S. PS2. I had a couple of questions before I did this: First) what is exactly needed in order to play the imported version on my U.S PS2? and can it not involve opening/modding my PS2? website? Second) I will be playing offline mode only in order to get the feel of it before U.S. launch, is there anything I need to register for before hand or can I just pop in and start playing? if registering is needed, can someone direct me to that website/location?

all you need in order to play Japanese games on the US PS2 is a flip top. something like this:
