I have to wonder how much of that dropoff is because PSU got bad press for being unplayable most of the first week. Still, I doubt it's going to be there again.
Japan's continued fixation with the DS continues to baffle me, though. Who the hell wanted more Brain Age?

Could be (though not likely) because the game is sold out everywhere. They did order a 2nd printing already right?

You would have thought everyone would have a copy of Animal Crossing over there by now too.

While that is a HUGE sales drop I have to at least partially agree with Ether....Plus it says that this is for ps2 only. I am curious to know pc sales figures. 20,000 in a week is still rather impressive however.

PC Sales figures? We're talking about Japan here.

Most RPGs in japan experience the same thing... huge sales week 1 and then drops.

I think the game has already done well beyond Sega's expectations, if the servers exploding wasn't evidence enough of that.

I would wager the game is sold out in a lot of places, if sega werent expecting the numbers online that they got, they probably werent expecting the sales they got either

Ah well, it will probably be off the charts by next week. I think the reason we don't have PC sales stats is because the PS2 version is WAY more popular in Japan.

...And... Freshly Picked Tingle's Rose Colored Rupee Land? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif What the heck is that?! Japan scares me sometimes. XD

Weird, a PSP game at the top. Its like the TWILIGHT ZONE.

Word of mouth can be a powerful thing. The initial problems with the network mode in the game didn't help things along, no more so than it did Final Fantasy XI. FFXI had a rough start, but its playerbase grew over time, and the same thing can happen to Phantasy Star Universe once these initial problems get addressed.

Word of mouth can be a powerful thing.
I think it is the most powerful force behind a product or service, even more than the commercials & ads.
The first week wasn't that stellar for PSU, but I think things can change.

I think every Japanese by law has to have a DS Lite >_>; I think its all the things everyone said here. Its probable the game is sold out, also probable that the problems it had at the beginning greatly affected. I also believe that will change. Like someone here said, FFXI also had a rough start and look where its at http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif I'm looking forward to PSU's future, especially since I think the game is going to do well over here http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif we'll see...

But seriously its due to bad press from the server thing + the elitest belief of the JP that they must get the game launch day to be the best, and play it nonstop as much as they are allowed in order to triumph. Any less is not elite, and is inferior. There are probably a few recreational gamers living in Japan, about 20% of their gaming population I'd say judging from the 20k second week sales in comparison to 120k. Using that as a basis I'd say 20/120 = 0.1667 carry the decimal 16.67% recreational gamers, at least as far as PSU is concerned. I don't care who you are, if you get a game like PSU on the release date or the week of release, you are most likely not going to be playing for recreation.

At any rate it is still the top console game over there. When you live on an island and you need to globally compete, you must travel. Travel = no console gaming = must buy handheld.

It is because many player can't log in on the first week. That is a huge probelm

Its because PSU will be sold/gone on the first day.....not many people get it on the second week.

No its a chart showing the affect of global sea temperatures on the average number of pirates.

Look at the amount of sales in the first week. Then look at the competing games. The games that cater to a wider audience still sold at least 50,000 copies less. And the amount of people that play RPG is far less than most other genres.

Most of the people that would buy PSU at all, have already gotten it.
They'll have another spike at NA release, and then it'll fall off again.

I'd like to see that chart.

Perhaps when the servers are stablized and friends hear from friends that everything's good again (And maybe when some content starts being unlocked), PSU's sales will rise again..

Sega of America better not make the same mistake of too few servers/space to handle an unexpected amount of ppl.

watashiwa
Sep 14, 2006, 03:04 PM
I seriously doubt they were. I even think their initial Japanese estimate of 20,000 for PS2/PC players for NA might be ENOUGH to start with due to the whole no advertisement thing. We'll see, though.

/laugh. You know it's funny, everything we say about them w/ GBA, they probably say the same about us and x-box.
