View Full Version : Censorship in our text bubbles

Phaze37
Sep 15, 2006, 10:03 PM
I just read on PSUpedia that the text in our chat bubbles is going to be censored again.

Why can't they just do what everyone else does for their online games, and give a warning screen before going online saying "Game experience may change online" instead of trying to stop people from using bad language? It's not like it's hard for someone who wants to swear to get around the censors.

It was ridiculous in PSO how normal everyday words and even the names of items available in the game were censored. Hell lazer, frozen shooter, saturday, refrigerator, shoes... are we going to have to remember another list of ordinary words so that we can remember to put a space in the middle so that they don't get censored? It was annoying having to re-type messages all the time when I forgot that a harmless word I was trying to say gets censored.

Buy the 360 version, I guess. They can't censor voice chat can they?

Ether
Sep 15, 2006, 10:18 PM
The censor is even more dumb this time, you can't say "isn't it". It'll censor the last 3 letters

"Put a" is censored too. As is "toss".

But you can go ahead and say fucker fucking fucked and it lets that all slide

lol that is strange and really handicaps the english language. there should be filter options to allow anything.

but then again, the default will make it unreadable to others. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

oh well, maybe resort to baby talk. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

That might change in NA version though.
Since they not going to connect the JP server to NA, they at least shoulda have thought of making sensoring different for these two versions.
But then again, its SEGA we talking about.

Phaze37
Sep 15, 2006, 10:35 PM
Sounds like it's become even worse this time around! Judging by the fact that it censors the last 3 letters of "isn't it", they're trying to stop people from getting around the censor by putting a space in the middle of the word. That's just going to make things exponentially worse. I remember PSO used to censor weird things because they were naughty words in other languages, but the PSU servers are seperated by language so hopefully they at least won't try that again.

By the way Darijuana I'm not going to buy the 360 version just because voice chat is uncensored. I'm sure the regulars on this board have heard this from me several times already, but voice chat is a negative feature for me because I am partially deaf, so no 360 version for me.

I would prefer filter options. The only game ive played with chat filters was Guild Wars and I thought it was cool. I think letting players choose the filter is better than to trying and censor every freakin bad word. -_-

Phaze37
Sep 15, 2006, 10:39 PM
Yes, filter options makes sense. I'ts probably too late for Sonic Team to add that feature though.

RoboKy
Sep 16, 2006, 12:16 AM
They dug up irrelevant or swear that are'nt even used anymore. Like you can't say frig because it's too close to fcuk, and dago and spic are some old racist term against hispanics and Italians. And there was some wierd stuff like pork that was edited. Wasn't there a way though to get around it by changing your language set or text?
Shiznit was also blocked, they don't like snoopy dog.

People will invariably get around the filter one way or another. I hope they do put in an option for the filter. Trying to block every bit of bad language is insanity in itself.

SodaPop1

lol, yes, practice is a good plan. Hopefully they don't add a bunch of new words to PSO's already-terrible list of bad words. They'd better not censor "gay" this time, I found that very offensive! It's not always a derogatory (sp?) term

Lol, I don't think you got what he meant...

What he means is that if you have the filter on, you won't be able to see people cuss, or cuss yourself. If you have it off, you can see other people cuss and you can cuss yourself.

If you do get it...I don't see why you think it would be pointless, O_O

And yet why the heck do we care that much? If so many people didn't abuse the filters, insisting on cursing etc, then perhaps the filters would have never gotten so over-zealous? I have to say we should blame only ourselves.

Tystys
Sep 17, 2006, 12:26 PM
Well, the problem is that they are blocking actual words in the english language because they have words like "ho" in them(case in point, you can't say shoes in PSO)

tyler2zelda
Sep 17, 2006, 12:31 PM
It's not actually 'ho' that they block out. it's the 'hoe' that they block out. Which is strange, 'cause if Harvest Moon was online and run by Sega, everyone would be doomed... ^_^

Jife_Jifremok
Sep 17, 2006, 11:47 PM
Why blame ourselves when there are plenty of other assholes to blame that overuse cuss words? For fuck's sake, those who use the language in a NORMAL way shouldn't have to suffer from the dumb ass actions of several uh...thousand(?) douchebags who need to watch their mouths. Hell, one of the reasons I'm cussing like this now is because I actually have the freedom to do so...I am not inhibited by the overzealous censors in uh..other forums and games. Of course, let us swear responsibly and not abuse our freedom of speech...uh, outside this thread.

I've just been reminded of a precious memory in Monster Hunter. While gunning an enemy from a very long distance, I typo'd and said "My shits take too long." and shits wasn't censored! Shit without plural was though...so maybe we should try cussing in plurality.

"Dios" is censored in naming your character, but I can name my character a variety of swear words if I pluralize them.

I find it pretty humorous personally.
