There are special PSU 8MBmemory cards.
But you don't especially need those do you?
I mean, you can use regular 8MB mem cards too right?

Yep, you can use standard ones.
But only use the offical sony or the licenced hori cards (both 8MB).
The cards from datel (16-64MB) tends to corrupt savefiles with newer games.
