Yeah, wasn’t sure to ask this under the system spects thread or not, but what the hell? Anyways I was wondering if it was confirmed or not if the PC version supported widescreen or not? I got my hands an early version and I don’t see it under options. I have a 1680 by 1050 resolution – so 16:10 aspect ratio. I noticed a few of you actually have the game imported so hopefully someone knows. If the game doesn’t support it right off is it just a matter of editing the options file? Also I think I read that one of the consoles either the ps2 or the 360 wouldn’t support wide screen, but the other would? Anyone know which is which? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure that I heard the 360 version would support widescreen.

I can't confirm really though, being the 360 version is coming to North America before it even comes out in Japan.

I think you mean 16:9 because there is no such thing as 16:10. I think I recall someone mentioning that the PC version did support WS if you editing an .ini file but I could be mistaken. You might want to ask VioletSkye in a PM since that person has the game and seem to be doing many test on how it runs etc.

16:10 is a common aspect ratio. On one laptop (Turion) it was in fullscreen on the other laptop (Intel) it wasn't. Both are 17" widescreens with the same native resolution. I didn't really investigate why that was, but I can look into it later today maybe. If someone knows offhand how to force widescreen let me know http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Thanks. I went over the .ini files and I didn't see anything that screams resolution edit. So in short of going into the data folder and searching through those, I was hoping that in a newer version of the game it listed the available resolutions. Assuming you're using XpPro, if you go into Display properties > settings > advanced > monitor > then uncheck "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" then apply - load up the game and you should see every resolution the game can display... again assuming that the game engine works like that and isn't on a fixed resolution settings list set by the programmers.

Well PSU PC's max res is 1280x1024 as far as I know, and changing the .ini file seems to have no effect for me.

Yeah... my screen's recommended resolution is 1920x1200(or rather, it's the highest setting), so..

Looks like windowed mode for me.

I stand corrected. Seems that after being a computer tech for 3 years you can still learn something new, but lets not be immature like some of you are being.

Yeah -sorry didn't mean for it to be too insulting. Little bit of a tech myself offical testing pending. Anyways I just find it hard to understand why the console game would support widescreen and the PC version wouldn't. I can understand that I might just have to wait for the north american release to actually find out, but theres alot of imports floating around so I figured someone would know or could find out.

I don't mind, I use my high concentration to make the screen 360°^E99

Ok, I went into the settings for the Intel GMA chipset and changed the display setting in the DISPLAY EXPANSION area from MAINTAIN ASPECT RATIO to FULL SCREEN (NO BORDER) and now it shows full screen on both laptops http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Is it true widescreen support or is the image just being stretched? I also have a 16:10 1680x1050 resolution monitor, and as far as I can see I'm only able to pull off a stretched, albeit fullscreen image.

VioletSkye
Sep 21, 2006, 03:30 PM
editted after finding set resolutions in game code.

As far as I can tell the game only supports 5 resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960 and 1280x1024.

Kinda of ignorant of ST if you ask me, but I don't care so much. The stretching isn't as terrible looking as it could be.

There's a set of predefined screen resolutions, and one of them is a widescreen res (1280x720? I forgot what's the exact one).

But are you sure you want to run full screen? I have a widescreen monitor but I just picked one of the 4:3 predefined resolution and just run in windowed mode.

Hold on a minute I've disassembled the options.exe file and I'm seeing there are a few resolutions listed that don't show up in my options menu. Interesting http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Here is a list of resolutions found in the game code:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x960
1280x1024

Nice.

The line that sticks out the most for me is the %ld x %ld line.. I'm guessing there is probably a way to set a custom resolution then by modifying the INI file? (Maybe?)

I know PSU.INI is located in Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication DataSEGA I was playing with this earlier today, and yeah, it seems all it checks for is the values 0-4 where 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 equal 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, and 1280x1024 respectively..

Have you guys tried checking the registry entries for PSU? I know one way to up the rez for FFXI is to edit the registry files.

watashiwa

Been there, done that. PSU doesn't modify the registry for it's display settings.. it uses the file PSU.INI located in the folder I stated above.

Found some interesting stuff in the SJSessionAX.DLL file:

RefreshLobbyUser
RefreshRoomList
JoinRoom
ExitRoom
Chat
Whisper
CreateRoom
JoinRoom
JoinChatLobby
RequestRoomUserInfo
QuickJoin
ForceUserOut
RejectChatInvitation
ForcedUserExit
ProhibitWordList

and tons more.

Anyway, I've gone way off topic. It would be interesting if the %ld line held the key to custom resolutions http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

It'd be nice if we could set a custom resolution.

The stretch on my monitor is tolerable, but could look a lot better.

I'm going to personally use windowed unless something comes up.

VioletSkye, do you know what compression or encryption algorithm is used on the psu.exe file? I didn't really look into it much, but hexing it doesn't show any sort of tag line which would identify the compressor.

I was just wondering if you knew or could find out by disassembling. I don't disassemble programs, so I'm not really familiar with that..

There was an offline fix or something done with the program by a person who's name I won't mention, but I don't communicate with him. I haven't even looked at his "fix" to see how it was done.. if it was through EXE modification or DLL.. I'm just assuming it was EXE modification, but the EXE seems encrypted or compressed.

What I was going to try doing, if I could decrypt or decompress the EXE, would be to modify the entries for resolutions in the EXE. Hex search for 1280 or 960 or anything.. and just custom hack the resolution into the EXE by replacing one of the other resolutions. I'd first try 1280x960 to 1280x720 and see how that fairs. But.. since I can't really read anything in the EXE.. seems like just a dream right now. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Ah, I was thinking 1280x960 then. I somehow thought that was widescreen, but I tried it again and it's not...

1280x720 is indeed 720p wide screen mode res, i got my pc and Xbox 360 hooked up to LCD HDtv via DVI & component, and i use it as dual monitor setting right next to the pc monitor when not using x360.

Well, it seems widescreen mode is yet another exclusive feature for the 360 version which is one of the reasons i was excited about PSU 360. It's quite a shame that this mode is not even optional on pc version but i guess it's likely due to game coding compatibility issue with the ps2 version.

...see, this is why i don't bother with gaming on pc, after all that hassle and headache for upgrading like every year messing urself with installations/configurations all that, and you still can't get that optimal setting to play the damm game in this case at least. I'll keep my gaming to console and save myself some trouble.

For those of you who are still wondering about why the Xbox 360 would have it and not anything else: Microsoft forces all companies that want the game signed off by them to make their games with strict protocols. One of them is that every game be at least 720p. That is your reasoning behind the X360 having it.

Its so dumb that they wouldn't. There are games that came out years ago that have widescreen resolutions.

I think the overall feeling is most PC monitors are not designed with WS formats necessarily...annoying I know, b/c I have a 17' WS as well. Most of my games do not support it, actually I only own 2 I think that do. Hopefully this trend changes.

I seem to only be able to play in window mode.?. My monitor is 1440x900. Is it possible to play with it maximized (streched)? When I try to I get an error message.
