View Full Version : How Bad is the Slowdown on PS2?

Rosaria
Sep 25, 2006, 03:06 AM
There was a conversation being held earlier over IRC, but I thought I'd just post this for everyone to give their personal opinion about the slowdown. I've already heard that there was going to be slowdown, but how bad is it? And if it's not too much to ask, can someone post a video demonstrating it? Thank you

its pretty bad @ times, im just glad im gettin the 360 as main (jp ps2 is just 2 see me thru). its like whenever there is a lot going on like loads of enemies all cating techs at you at the same time, (yep it happens, A LOT!! damn barta casting cyclops monkeys). im just hoping that with the power of the 360 all will be well for me in the future.

it doesnt make the game unplayable just a bit frustrating when you cant do stuff (like heal item or resta) cos the ps2 is having a chip meltdown.

Slowdown..crap. If it bothers me i'll upgrade my pc. I don't wanna spend years on ps2 and getting owned by a ps2 because of the lag.

Low on hp+lag+enemy=frustrating death.

Well, I'd get it for 360, but friends are going to be on PS2/PC serverside. Since I'm afraid to ruin my laptop or have it run like crap I'ma get it for PS2.

I think it will be fine, and not be that bad. They knew people would complain if they made it impossible to play on PS2, especially because its their biggest japanese fan base system, so i think it will be fine. If i need to, i'll get it for 360 if i decide to get that instead of PS3 eventually.

I play EQOA, the MMO for the PS2. In a standard group of 4, there isn't much slowdown at all. In a raid situation though, with 15 ppl and up, it can be bad. With all the spells and such going off, unless you're within 10 feet or so of the mob, you can't even see it.

Most likely, it will depend on how much animation is going on at any given time. (A full group in a boss battle, with multiple enemies and large AoE animations/spells/etc..etc.. going off, may cause a bit of slowdown. I think most ppl would be able to put up with a bit of slowdown in situations like this over the choice of not playing / enjoying this fantastic game). http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

Ummm, i don't think the slowdown will be that bad at all. FFXI had no slow down at all really for the PS2 but maybe that was because it ran off the hard drive? Can you download PSU onto the HD?

Varo
Sep 26, 2006, 08:39 AM
Yeah that's unfortunate about the slowdown. Hopefully it won't be unplayable.

That's an interesting idea about the PS2 hard drive. I assume it would indeed boost performance at least marginally if PSU was installed on the hard drive.

I really wish SEGA at least gave you the option to use the PS2 hard drive. I mean, they couldv'e sold some special PSU version hard drives if they wanted to, and make some extra cash.

The slowdown isnt that bad, if you've ever played shadow of the colossus, the slowdown on PSU is nothing compared to that, and Shadow of the Colossus was perfectly playable

Sep 26, 2006, 01:11 PM
That's good to hear, Ryudo. I'll be playing online on pc, but I also preordered it for ps2 for offline.

If its not as bad as SotC that's fine with me. SotC was called "terrible" by some for its slowdown. Most of the time, and this is dead-honest-true, I didn't even notice. They handled it so well that it almost felt (artistically) intentional, like slow-mo or something. =P

Mmm... SotC and Ico, two of my favorite games ever, right up there with PSO.

hmn i dont recall shadow of the colossus having slowdown and i played through the game like 6 times because i was determined to TA every collosus on each difficulty.

Shadow of the Colossus didn't really have much in the way of slowdown, as I recall.

What it did have was truly obnoxious frame-skipping. They tried to cover it up (pretty clumsily) by applying the most overblown motion blur effect I've ever seen, but it was still pretty obvious that you were running at like, less than ten frames per second when the game got busy.

Personally, I thought it was almost unplayable.

PSU runs better than SotC in areas that aren't that taxing on the system (SotC was generally just bad all over, performance-wise), but PSU doesn't do auto-frameskip, so 20fps in PSU is a lot worse than 20fps in SotC.

Maybe Peoples opinions of how bad slowdown is differs? lol. Idk, to me- if you could handle playing ps2 games until now, i think it will be fine. I remember bad slowdowns in games like ... Dynasty Warriors- but that was really cool lol, bullet mode anyone? Anyways, i think it will be fine. I said this earlier, but i dont think sega would make the game crap for PS2 if it wasn't their biggest seller in Japan right now, and i think it will be huge in NA and EU as well. The thing about PS2, vs 360, is people who have friends who have a PC can play together. I know you all know that, but i think thats a huge deal- although i dont understand with 360 and windows being the same company, but regardless, it rocks http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif. Thats my $ 0.2+

motion blur? maybee i need to play again but i dont remember any motion blur except during the scenes where the colossi die. and im pretty sure shadow of the colossus doesnt acess the the HDD so its not as if it had extra resources to draw on.i just got my ps2 refurbished before i playeed SotC but i doubt that changes anything.

That motion blur effect does happen at times in SotC, but I doubt most truly notice it. Due to the fact that they were most likley focusing onto one small part of the Colossi. Refurbished Ps2 might help in some minor aspects, anyways. Slowdown is to be expected, annoying it may be... people will most likley blow it off or come whine about on some random gaming board http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Even PSOGC had slowdown here and there; I remember it most vividly in the Ruins, running into a room full of Dimenians, Belras and Chaos Sorcerors. I can't expect that the slowdown on PSUPS2 can be much more significant than that, and that wasn't enough to spoil the game, though it was mildly annoying.

I know what I'm asking for is an inconvenience, but if someone with a PS2 version can set up a camera to record your t.v. while doing a part of a mission you know will cause a slow down that would be great. This way we can see the slow down ourselves. I've just heard that the slow down is either "Really crappy" or "not too bad." I just don't know which one to believe. Thank you.

People who actually say SotC is terrible because of the "slowdown" or "frame-skipping" are idiots. I never understood people rating an entire game because it has a few little bugs. I don't see too many people calling Morrowind shitty, and it was possibly the bugiest game I have ever played.

Internet lingo is actually shorthand/acronyms. Both shorthand and acronyms have been sub-sets (for the lack of a better word atm) of the english language, and likely many other languages for centuries. So don't argue about something for which you obviously haven't thought through.
