For me in PSO was the community i would always get on to say hi to friends I made and go and play and what not so much fun

They give you a goal to work toward. A sense of purpose and something to do. In PSO, for most it was the appeal of hunting for rares (which the dupers thoroughly ruined). PSU appears to offer a lot of the same, but with a far more comprehensive system.

The fact that it's not a generic point and click MMO/Network RPG for one.

Real time action game-style combat, and the lack of timesinks.

The art-style, the side stories, rares, combat, MAGs, and the good ol' thrill of leveling up.

QFT, although gotta change MAGs to PMs for PSU of course.

Edit: And add what Tycho said below me too.

The money, The power, all of it could be yours just at the right level. lol. But I only had the chance to play online once. It was a lot of good people there.

The red boxes, the art style, the music, the atmosphere, the story, the sheer amount of customization.

Right, and the fact that you don't have to be good or even decent at the game to be welcome in a party, everyone has fun giving the game a nice, casual atmosphere with exciting boss battles (I still get on edge whenever I fight De Rol Le).

NO GODDAM POINT AND CLICK!! THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SO UNGODLY GOOD.

But anyways, pretty much every single one of the above ideas.

It was the first casual online action-rpg; jump on, jump off and still have fun.

Meh, I'm a fan of the midieval settings myself. I don't like the casual clothing styles in this game.

I myself like the simplicity of combat combined with the complexity of stat building, as well as the the goals.

Because WE ARE PLAYING IT!... The community never bitch against the game like I see in other MMORPGs... so I guess the community makes the game a lot better.

**The community that I'm talking about doesn't include cheaters and hackers.

RTA Battle system. Nostalgia (For those who've actually played PS on genesis).

There really wasn't any strategy in PSO, aside from a mindless hack & slash.
Which tended to become extremely boring offline. It was still fun to play with friends tho.

I think the thing that made PSO really great is that it was one of the first attempts to make a online videogame console RPG.

PSO/PSU being an online action rpg with a great community!
I love action rpg's and making online just adds a whole new level to it all.
I hate turn based and point 'n click games.

Now if they ever make a Secret of Mana online game, I'll be a happy camper.

It was the first which is part of the reaosn why many of us play this game. Also its OUR game as in for those of us who never played on online game till PSO or an online adventure game PSO is our pinnacle in the online this area. To many of us who examine every online we've played since then we compared every online adventure title to PSO. although they may have a greater scale than PSO in the end we realized that alot of the extra crap they use to entice us is very shallow and barely meets the same enjoyability that PSO offered (especially at hgiher prices).

No game needs to have a higher scale than or be massive to be good/great and many of us didn't realize that PSO set the standard of what a decent online adventure game "should" be. Massive games are shallow gimmicky time-sinks which we have all established many times but it will take a while before more comanies, if ever, relaize this and start scaling down online adventure games and work at making them good rather than recyclcing what we told them we THOUGHT we wanted in online games.

That's actually fairly close to the truth (http://www.phantasystarwiki.com/index.php?title=Connections_to_Star_Wars).

(That page is still rather incomplete, mind you.)

There's also the fact that even though you do have a purpose, it's not stressed to the point that it's needed to complete this purpose. People can just eat shit and play around in the lobby, and I think the freedom that PSU offers, while limited, is something you rarely see in games now adays.

Why don't they make games more like PSO/U? Makes no sense.

Tystys
Oct 3, 2006, 06:46 PM
Because the original MMORPG formula is already way to succesful. I think the main thing that PSU isn't so popular is because people don't usally pay for games like PSU.

The fact that these game's actually take movement skill to be good at, unlike the previously stated 'Point and click' online rpg's.

And come on, who could resist a HUnewearl?

WoW takes Movement Skill too. And for me it was mostly rare hunting. Always trying to be the first to pick up that little red box. And you don't even know what it is yet. Could it be ANOTHER M&A60 Vise? Or is it the once and a lifetime drop "Heavens Punisher" Who cares grab it anyway and give it to my lowbie character! Also, call me crazy but the hackers also made the game for me. IIRC, when I played on DC, I was there the first time a Hacker Deleted Servers. I saw the birth of Fsod and PK'ing. All of this, to me, established PSO as my first MMO. Unless you count Diablo, but that wasn't as fun.
