View Full Version : You must be this tall to ride... (character creation stuff)

Uppermost line in the proportion box references 6 feet. Characters can be as high as 7 foot tall, going higher than what the pictured character shows (default human male avatar stands at 6'3"). For the rest of the world who doesn't believe in American metric bullcrap, 6 feet is just a bit over 182 centimeters. I know some of you like to go into detail with your characters and are nitpicky like myself. Maybe some of you intend to model your online character based off of your own appearance (which is what I usually do). Perhaps this'll aid things a bit.

Yeah, kind of an unusual post, but what the hey...

Edit: kassy made a much nicer looking height scaling chart than I did, so I've removed mine and put the better looking one in its place.

how'd you figure it out? either way, its pretty interesting to know. but I have my HUmar with his ears touching the line and he's still only slightly taller than Hyuga who is like 180 cm or like 5'10'' or so.

Dude, I *so* wanted a reference for this. I'm one of the nitpicky sorts, so this is incredibly useful (if unofficial; then again, the estimate really does make sense).

I noticed you can make older characters now (grey hair, beards, etc..), and now that I've seen the wee characters, I SOOO want to make my extra mode guy a little old man Force character.

Parn
Oct 2, 2006, 09:13 PM
Addendum: my estimates were based mostly upon American measurements, but in hindsight, it's probably more accurate to state that the uppermost line is 180 centimeters (approximately 5' 11") considering the game's made in Japan and things are more inclined to be based on the metric system, and the fact that whole numbers are nicer to work with, so this would put me off by about an inch. But you get the gist of things either way.

well, I like the height of my Human Hunter in extra mode as he is, like around 180-190 cm or so.

Parn
Oct 2, 2006, 09:52 PM
Well Stoic, consider that PSU's humans are more or less based off of real life humans to an extent, appearance-wise. The average human male, at least in the United States, is 5'10" while the average female is 5'5".

If you make a character at around the average male human height (read: near that top line), you stand at about the same height as most of the shopkeepers in the game, as well as around Hyuga's height, since Shiroryuu mentioned him earlier.

I always make my character midgets...not cause I want to look "chibi" or anything utterly retarded like that - I just like the feeling of having weapons as big or x2 the size of my character. My character will be a midget, like he is now - just like every other PSO character.

6 ft is 4 inches to short for me =/ do they still have race based height restrictions...like in pso the tallest female character was racaseal.i was under the impression that beasts were the tallest.

nice picture, Kassy, but I think most people will think the top visible line is "5 feet" for some reason and therefore think they are short, so they might raise it to the max thinking that's 6 ft. when it's in fact 7 ft. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

but whatever, it will still be hard to gauge what's really too short and too tall according to what one expect's their height to be.

if like their community is made up of mostly 4 ft 'hobbits', then their 5 ft. selves might as well feel like 7 ft. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Something else to keep in mind is that shoes actually change your height in PSU. If you go from regular shoes to boots with a heel it makes a noticeable difference in your effective height. I guess due to the way they orient your character in the creation screen you can't really tell, but if you change shoes in the dressing room you can see the difference.

Wow, thanks a lot, I just noticed that I made my character exactly the height I wanted.

I'll be 5'5" (1m66) in game, I hope there will not have too much giants on japanese servers, I feel so short actually ...

By the way, I took these info in a note pad, I was really hoping to have some comparison item put in game (like an average human shade in background when creating the char) but this is just greater.

Again, thanks a lot Parn and Kassy.

zofia

^well, you could make a 'stealth' bot designed to infilatrate enemy locations, unnoticed until the moment of attack!

Scirrocco
Oct 3, 2006, 11:06 AM
Size /= power. You could make a cast thats intentionally small so enemies underestimate him, giving him the advantage in any fight.

Mwabwetumba
Oct 3, 2006, 11:40 AM
Size = intimidation also. Casts in this game looks like full-time frontline warriors, and I think their size should reflect this. IMO ofcourse, I dont really care what other ppl do to their casts, but mine will be a tall and proud HUnter..with an afro. Hes a discobot, inspires his allys with his funky moves and smart one-liners...´

Hemhem, I guess my point in this is:

Knightly-looking = rather tall = more impressive-looking = cooler (IMO) + its always fun to tower over your allies..

Kano-Okami
Oct 3, 2006, 12:20 PM
In a way, height could be a disadvantage.
In PSO, an enemy was just another enemy to my 4'8 FOnewm (including platforms). Everything was bigger to him, so it didn't matter, eliminating the intimidation factor.
Although when I started to play with my 6'1 FOmar, anything taller then me was a bit intimidating (excluding bosses). Especially if they were a power house.
(IE Chaos Bringer)
but then again, who doesn't get spaz if a Centaur dashes at you like a madman with a Blade-arm with your name on it?..

Does this mean we kinda have to guess at the average heights on the 4 races?
I assumed the average height mentioned is only for the human male. So we kinda have to adjust our average height if we wanna stick to traditional races, right?
http://www.pso-world.com/media/psuartwork/roughsketch3.jpg
I still want my HUnewman to be slightly taller and thinner then the average human like the pic suggests.

I assume the imaginary average height bar isn't adjusted as you choose the different races and gender?

LOL @ Parn's last post. I'll be about 5'5". A little taller than before, but not by much, and still shorter than average. Napoleonic complexes FTW.

Taller =/= better. I am only ~3 inches (~7.62 centimeters) tall IRL from 7 feet and I can say there are many times I wish I were shorter. I know ingame playability isn't affected much, but IRL height has diminishing returns.

That said, I am gonna have taller ranged charaters with more average-short melee toons. This way I won't be blocking anyone ^_^

I bet there will be a lotta tall toons at first, but there will still be a diversity. That, or everybody goes 7ft and that becomes the new standard...
