SEGA is proud to announce the start of the Open Beta for Xbox 360 on October 11th!. This will be the first chance to play the newest addition to the long running Phantasy Star series. The Beta test period is expected to run until October 18th and will allow participants to play through a portion of the online game. We encourage users interested in the Multiplayer aspects of Phantasy Star Universe to check out all there is to see in the Beta environment!

Getting started is extremely easy! If you want to participate you must have an active Xbox Live Gold account. The Beta will be available for download on the Xbox Marketplace between October 11th and October 12th. Once you have the beta downloaded, you'll be able to play immediately! Once online, we highly recommend the following activities to get the most out of this Open Beta period:

Create Your Character - Construct the perfect avatar with the robust Character Creation tool that enables players to change their character's body shape and dimensions, hairstyle and color, facial structure and features, and more!

Meet New People - Head out to the lobby and meet new people! Visit various shops for weapons, clothing and other items and then join or create a squad to embark on missions with new friends.

Explore the Universe - With three expansive planets to explore, discover the adventures that lie ahead on Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob.

My Room - Create your personal online space by adding items and elements from your adventures, and decorating your My Room with various themes and wallpaper. In here, your Partner Machinery is able to create new weapons and items for you to use in battle, trade with friends, or sell for a profit. Players can also exchange Partner Cards and visit friends in their My Room!

Customize Your Look - Head to one of the various Clothing or Parts shops located across the Universe and outfit your character with the newest styles.

Try Different Job Types - Speak to the Guardian Representative located on the fifth floor of the Guardian's Colony to freely change between the three class types: Hunter, Ranger, and Force.

Create and Sell Items - Craft items from the base materials you find during your adventures using your Partner Machinery. You can even sell these items within player-run Shops!

Chances are good that this'll be our "free" period of time and that we'll be able to rollover whatever we do, that all we do during the demo will be transferred once the full game is released. It's what they did with FFXI, perhaps it'll be the same here?

If the demo is restricted to the US Marketplace, you can create a US Gamertag by making a Hotmail account and inputting a US address there. You will need to grab an actual address to make it work, just find a random US shop's address on the web and use that.
Once you have the hotmail set up, go to your 360 and create a new profile. Click join Xbox Live and recover your MSN/Hotmail data for the fake US account. Tada! And you should have a free month of Gold included (each 360 includes 5 trial memberships of Xbox Live Gold).

Hmm... you made me feel slightly better about not being able to participate in the beta. There is something to be said about playing for the first time with the full retail release, rather than getting your first experience in a limited demo version.

How did that make you feel better? A demo is presented to get players interested and get experience early, thus prepares the player for the actual game. Do you know what a 'demo' is? Ha ha ha. There is a certain joy to be had when playing an online RPG upon it's release, without having played it before. Arguably the best time you will have when playing an online RPG is the time where you are completely clueless about anything in the game, just starting. A newbie, as we call it. I believe he is refering to this. If he plays the demo, it would be like sneaking a peek at your Christmas presents a week before Christmas.

lol yea this demo thing was somethign out of the blue. i think this is a good idea by sega though. since teh 360 is mainly a US system, who is better to test the severs than the US. sad thing is now im about to loose a week of my life because of this. im glad though im making a charcter that wont be my main. so just in case they wipe or data after teh beta i wont be dissapointed all the stuff i did will be lost.

you get a gold account when u sign up with xbox live....if u did that already then head into "your account" information, then you can purchase the gold account

I've been reading your site for a couple weeks to get ready for PSU as a complete newbie to the PS games. You've got tons of great information here!

Last night, after hearing the news about the upcoming 360 beta, I picked up a one-month Gold Live subscription. So I've never tried voice chat on the Xbox before.

On the PC, there are a lot of settings that you need to configure for voice chat on programs like Ventrillo and Teamspeak. You configure push to talk button or the hands-free threshold so no one has to hear you breathing, you configure mic gain so that your volume to others is appropriate, you have echo options to test out your mic and configuration, etc.

I've been looking through the Xbox 360 dashboard trying to find the mic/headset options and can't find anything. How do you set up your 360 mic to make sure you're coming through clear, at good volume and without sending background noises?

Basically for the x360, the headset plugs right into the bottom of your controller. From there you can adjust the volume of the headset and switch from mute to speaking. If any other optios would be in the dashboard, they probably would be about voice masking.

Side onte: The easiest way to tell if you have Gold or Silver is to check what colour the bar that hold your Gamertag in the Dashboard is. Yellow = Gold and Silver = Sillver. The only real difference between the two is that Silver can only play MMOs online, while genres like FPS and the like are restricted to Gold level users.
