I am in Japanese 2, and I know I couldn't conversate with a Japanese person casually yet.

It takes more than a couple quick lessons >_>

I very much doubt that you'd be able to learn enough Japanese to get any farther than "Hello" without making a real effort to study it seriously. If you want to do that, enroll in a class; otherwise just learn to communicate through an elaborate system of cut-in chat prompts and responses.

I can read hirigana, but I sure as hell can't understand it! Yay school!

It's taken me years of independent study and collegiate instruction just to get to a point where I can read most written Japanese (still need some help from WWWJDIC every now and again), and still only have just above basic conversational skills.

From my experience back in the day with importing FFXI:
Make a cheat sheet.
Make it several pages long if you need to.
Get a dictionary.
Get a grammar primer.
Get a phrase book.

LOL, same here. Now I just have to get cracking on the Katakana and Kanji. Hurray for independent study!

I recently looked at a kanji book that i picked up from my local library and my head about 'asploded. Yeah, learning Japanese is going to take years. But hey, I can look at an untranslated copy of Shonen Jump and sound out the words now...even if I have no idea what the hell they mean.

10-20 years sounds about right. I been playing fighting games for like 15 years and I can say all the Japanese phrases on those, lol.
