View Full Version : Naming a character....

Well, I have been wondering what I want to name my Male Human Hunter...and want all of your opinions. I had a horrible experience in FFXI where I named my character (Salazar), and then got sooo tired of seeing the name over my character's head.

So I was thinking that I need a name that will be cool, and have a lasting coolness affect. lol

Tell me what you like of the following names:

Char
Lyre
Lockhart
Suliman
Heen
Io

I want a futuristic sounding name. Since, you know, this is a Sci-fi game. Just wondering what you all think. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

I like Lyre. It sounds cool... and it's one of the oldest intruments ever made. I also like Io.

I like Lyre, too. As for a sci-fi name, I'd like to see Lockhart or Lyre on there. I'm leaning towards Lockhart, but that's just me.

Io is nice. Short and sweet. When I read Lyre, I think Liar... doesn't bode well. Also, i see Sullyman and Lockhard every now and then, so not exactly one of a kind.

Io is a girl's name, also I hope you like being a cow.

while were on the topic, how does the name axel sound for a char?

Miyoko
Oct 18, 2006, 10:36 PM
Overused. >_> there're a lot of Axels out there (or Axls, or other variations). I personally wouldn't use it because of this, but eh... It sounds fine, sure, but like I said... Overused http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

"Io, who is one of the Three Main Ancestors, was turned into a cow after having been seduced by Zeus, and forced to wander over the whole world until she settled in Egypt."

No.

Edit: All my chars are named from greek myth. None are gods, because naming yourself after a god is somewhat cheesy.

So what exactly can we do with the character names? A-Z obviously, what about numbers? Dashes? Brackets? Parenthesis? Spaces? Underscores?

This'll give me an idea of what name to choose if I know what is allowed, instead of a last minute decision when I get the game and find out it's somewhat limited. I ask because i've never seen names other than with letters.

Is it true that People can have Characters the Same Name as other people, like Exactly?

Example:

If I had Lockheart (I am not going to name my char that but...)

Could someone else also have Lockheart....?

Thanks in Advance http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Origional doesn't really matter. It only matters if YOU like the name and can tolerate it for a long LONG time. That's why all of the names that I make end up being short and sweet... Because face it, even if you choose a long name, people will normally shorten it down to 1 syllable anyway.

I went from Sevyn to Sev.

My friend went from Robin to Ro.

I mean... Those aren't even long names to begin with, but hey... Whatever makes it easier. The less you have to type the better sometimes, and I also have a friend named Axel. So I can tell you there will at least be one other Axel around.

On Topic: Char is cool.

I have narrowed it down to 2 names (drumroll please http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif).....Char and Lyre. I like Char because it is just a cool name. And I like Lyre because it kinda has that futuristic sound to it, despite it being an ooooold word. Hmmm...decisions decisions...Sheesh >.<

Lyre [Nice, Hellenic, much like the feel of PS1/PS2]

Lockhart [Not futuristic, sounds like the main character from a 70s detective drama]

Suliman [A little too LotR]

Heen [I like this one]

Io [Another Hellenic idea, this one a bit darker]

I still have yet to meet another Drown, and it doesn't seem likely to come up.

You know what is a name that used to be seemingly everywhere videogamewise and now I haven't heard of in ages? "Buster." Buster was a solid name. Someone should use that one, maybe if I make a second char I will name him that.

Names, names..always a tricky thing to choose depending on the effort. I think I might just use my screen name on here..or something else..by the way, this is my first post here. I look forward to talking with you guys.

I really wish I could tell everyone what name I am using (or used with the beta version) but then it would ruin it's Originality http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif But if you ever see me online you'll know it's me http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif Because I am certain there will be very few people using the name http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Ha, it might be a little bit tougher to pick you out of a crowd with no info on your name whatsoever than you think.

Unfortunately it is a Cool Name to use which is why I am too shy to share it. It would end being another Sephiroth or Cloud situation......and it will probably end up that way anyway but at least I can try not to fan the fire http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Lockheart reminds me of Harry Potter, as does Salazar.

Well, maybe you'll let us know when you actually create the character.

Names always come naturally to me when making characters. What I usually do is just think of syllables that sound cool together and string them together to make a name with a fun and memorable rhythm. I usually like trying to balance out different sounds so that a name is easy to roll off the tongue (not some retarded amateurish elf name like Lylia'rylian'lithil'li) and easy to remember. I'll generate a few right now just to show you how simple it is:

Randomly conjured male names:
Divence Gederay
Wieling Bertrudo
Harenole Harnsway
Gerran Gisterani

Randomly conjured female names:
Mille Linnery
Ridian Mersay
Jordena Fauske
Sennli Haversaye

You also may notice that even the sound of one's name can invoke a hint towards their personality somewhat. Gerran Gisterani sounds like he could be a husky, bitter fellow, while Wieling Bertrudo might be a kind of snickering, shady kind of guy; Jordena Fauske might be a stern and strictly-business kind of woman, where Sennli Haversaye sounds like a free-spirited, upbeat gal.

Original names aren't that hard to conceive, just conjure up what feels natural to you when spoken. Of the names you have presented, I like Char, Lyre, Heen and Io.

Char is a very basic, but straight-to-the-point cool name that hints a sort of brash and reckless youth to your guy.

Lyre, naturally, has a sort of lyrical flow and has a kind of soothing effect; Lyre might be the name of a calm and easygoing fellow.

Heen is pretty unique, and it doesn't really have a suggested personality so you could take that character anywhere you want. (the only drawback I foresee is that people'd be prone to be going like "Heeen! Heeeeeeeeen!" =P).

Io has a sort of sophistication in its simplicity, setting aside the cultural reference; it has a kind of mysterious, exotic sound, and is likely to raise a lot of "So wait, is it Ee-yo or Ai-yo?" questions.

Out of you List , Io
out of your two tops picks , Lyre
That is my input , your ultimately the one who picks the name , for reasons no one can question once its in a party with them http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
Funfact : my name is the name of my old DC PSO HuCAST. stayed the same ever since.
