About Partner Machinery

I've read that eventually you can take your PM into battle with you. Does anyone know any specific details about this (is it actually visible like a mag, does it aid in battle etc.)?

EDIT: After further reading it seems as if the PM gains some sort of human form...? The one in the guide looks like a female, but it came from a pinkish girly looking PM. Hopefully the cooler your mag looks the cooler it's "picque" is.

Also, is this just story mode or does this apply to network mode as well?
