Once you make it, it is that way. you do have four character slots however.
or you could delete and remake >.>

And as far as clans go, there is no need to have anything beyond a full friends list with a good number online, for PSO/U

Because i'll be damned if i'm gonna party with someone with clan initials in their name that nobody else in the party likes. It'll cause too much drama and tension for me to play this game as intended: For fun and enjoyment. Visible clans would ruin the experience eventually. I don't have a problem with clans. Think it would be a nice addition. Cool if you could pick a sysbol that appeared next to your name/party. Maybe make it a tattoo everyone in the clan could get as well.

Its a good idea for a game heavily invested in clan creating and maintaining. This is not one of them though.
