View Full Version : Non-biased reviews of the Beta?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a non-biased review of the beta. I'm trying to figure out what a "non obsesses with PSO player thinks of it."

Most of the people here on PSO-world have loved it, but others have being saying they were most displeased. Thus, why I'm looking for a non-biased review.

Anyone?

You're asking for a non-biased review on a fan site for the game?

Oh that's rich. I hate to sound like a dick, but this really isn't the place to do that

Well I played through the beta, and there was some slow-down on the console, it was probably due to lag and the fact it was running off the HD. Graphics are top-notch, as well as sounds. If you have played PSO, be ready for the addiction, it comes back fast.

The 360 controller is the most coordinated and comfortable for the game IMO

This I will agree on. The 360 controller did feel great, and it just seemed like it was made for PSU XD

i had a friend get the beta that never played a phanasty star game ever and he enjoyed it, he may actually get it which is surprising because he doesnt even get downloadable content for games yet alone pay a monthly fee. so its pretty good.

Well, as psyched as I am there certainly were some issues to keep in mind.

There was slowdown, sometimes at times where it made absolutely no sense. Rotating a camera in a hallway, all alone, could give slowdown while an intense battle could see none.

I'd suggest getting a keyboard even if you're going 360, as voice-chat only applies to your party with a few exceptions.

The core gameplay is repetitive, just as it is for just about any game. The (in my opinion) greater degree of maneuverability over PSOs of old and the PA setup helps, but in the end there aren't really that many moves you'll be making use of in a given battle. Though enemy AI is improved, from the beta at least you could really cut it down to under 10 different AI routines, bosses not included. As many have stated, a number of the bosses are reskins, further increasing the repetitiveness.

At its core it's a slightly more actiony diablo hack n' slash... the lowdown camera angle and smooth flow of battle with no 'click and wait' setup give the more action.

In the end, I'd say it's decent if you like action-RPGs, better if you like the pursuit of loot and level. I happen to really like the setup of the PSO/PSU world in terms of character, technology, magitech, and whatnot. That's probably the greatest appeal for me personally, the world.

If it was the same engine but with a less appealing world, I'd probably buy sometime between release and christmas and enjoy the story mode (I happen to like action RPGs). Perhaps some online, but it wouldn't be the first thing I'd do. Keep in mind there's a bunch of great new releases this fall for just about every gaming platform covering most game genres, as well as two new platforms entering the market.

That's about as neutral as I could get.

I agree with that guy ^

I played PSO on the Xbox for a few months and it was a pretty fun game but I haven't played it in ages and just signed up for this forum yesterday. Found it from one of the nicer guys I played the beta with.

The beta could have looked better for a 360 game. Controls could have been laid out better. World could have been richer. Servers sometimes got laggy. $10/mo for a massive online text lobby and six player instances seems pricey. Seems like there is a lot of missed potential. Still it was a lot of fun for me and it is pretty well polished.

When I first heard that Sega was charging a monthly fee I was turned off and not going to buy it. After playing the demo for a couple hours I felt for sure I was not buying it.

After playing the demo for another day and getting to understand the game and controls the fun really grew on me.

After playing the demo for a week I thought $10 isn't too bad if sega releases ongoing content and it keeps me from buying a bunch of other games. I do love action RPGs and this one, even with all its shotcomings, is pretty darn fun.

After getting cut off cold turkey from the beta I am counting the hours until its release. Not in the mood to play anything else on my 360. I just want PSU back.

I was originally planning on going ps2, but decided to try the beta anyways.

Some slowdown, but that was never consistant. Sometimes there was none at all, even in large rooms with plenty of enemies. I'll agree with the above poster who said that it doesn't really look like a 360 game, but I think the artistic direction and color pallette more than makes up for that.

More people are using a keyboard than voice chat, though regardless of communication method, the majority of people have been friendly.

Seconded. I can't wait for the full release now. Before the beta, I wasn't even sure I was gonna get this game at all.

The beta was buggy. It seemed like I crashed everytime someone entered my party, or I entered someone else's. The lag was simply due to the fact that it is a stress test run on limited free server space and will improve for the paid full version. We pay the 9.99 a month for updates and content, and server consistency. Other than the bugs the game was spectacular, they took everything that PSO did wrong and made it better. ^_^
