View Full Version : Wonderin' if it's worth it

So, over a year ago, when I first heard about PSU, I was pretty excited. Looking at the screenshots now, though, it looks like it might be a little disappointing (at least graphically). Just wondering what people's thoughts on it are.

Also, I'm likely going to pick up the PC version - does anyone have it? Are the controls horrible, or can I customize them to something nice and comfortable? Will I need to buy a gamepad for my PC in order to enjoy the game?

Any thoughts anyone has would be appreciated http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif.

To be honest I was thinking the same thing. i was wondering if it was going to be better than the original PSO... and it exceeds all of my expectations.

Well, mostly I was looking for criticism on the controls of the PC version, heh. PSU is my WoW killer, so I wanna be able to control my character comfortably http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

The words in your mind are blasphemy you shall soon be content on the day of arrival of the PSU NA. All our brothern will rejoice in the great times in this epic new 3d world adventure. I know i already have once over a month ago. I wish to do it again.

Though i would recommend getting a gamepad either usb or usb/psx converter with a psx pad. Personally i was too lazy to filter through the japanese before and try to figure out how to change strifing from left arrow to shift ^_^;;;

Eh? Personally I'd wanna be able to control with WASD style controls... is there mouselook? I honestly haven't researched anything about PSU's control scheme, heh.

NEWSFLASH!

You can get drivers to use your Xbox or PS2 controller with your PC and programs that can remap any PC controls to the gamepad.

Well considering i couldn't read ???? and ?????? i had difficult with the controls back with PSU JP so i just use my controller and it worked great. I tshould be alot easier when ?????? actually means Shoot left mouse click and what not :3nod:. I think the biggest drawback with the keyboard at least for myself was lack of controlling the camera aside from that it worked out well in terms of using pinky strafe WASD F1 Menu and so forth.

But of course its just i grew up with GC PSO and really couldn't shun myself away from it so with PSU i just used a usb-psx converter to just play on the PS2 controller works better than i thought http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.

Mm - do you figure they sell USB-PSX converters at EB or Best Buy/Future Shop any places like that? Or, do I need to order it from somewhere online?

Edit - I'd rather use a Dreamcast controller like I'm used to http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif heh

There is no mouselook, sadly, so you're gonna have to go controller on this one.

And you're gonna need one that has two sticks (camera is gonna be a bitch without it). So Dreamcast controller = no.

Well i mean you should be fine with just WASD if your use to playing PSO with a keyboard. I personally couldn't adapt due to my sheer bias in playing the GC for god knows how long. In either case the most recent one i got was from RadioShack and it's worked out well so far just one player converter though which is unfortunate for other games but still gets the job done. I have checked EB Best Buy or Future Shop for them because i've only bought 3 for myself one from six-level.com which i think was taken over or out of business, the second one from Ebay and the other from Radio Shack as i mention previously.

YAY, someone who remembers me, I figure everyone forgot by now. But seriously, you're gonna want to use a PS2/360 controller on this one.

Overall of course but in terms of MMOs that's debatable issue in itself which i won't start...someone else can...just not me.

Cool - I think we only played together once or twice, or chatted in a lobby a bunch or something. Just remember you as a PSO World regular, mostly http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

If you're looking for a game like EQ or WoW youll be a bit disapointed, if you're looking for something like diablo or guild wars with combat a million times better and a better crafting/economy PSU is for you

And PSO isent even in PSU"s league

Well, Cause_I, I'm from way way back, I played PSO starting from v1 on the Dreamcast, hehe. I'm quite familiar with the combat system and world... just yeah, got a little tired of it after like 3-4 years of playing http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif. Excited about a new world to explore, new items to hunt, etc!

Mag, who else would you say still plays / reads these forums from back in '01 - '02?

Actually, I have played the PC version, and I can answer the question. PSOBB used an awkward mouse, click'n'drag system. People complained about it. PSU uses WASD. Some people will find it preferable to using a game controller (some, not all).

As for how it compares to PSO, well, the short of it is that they seem to have addressed everything we complained about in the previous games. This is what 5 years' (nearly six, even) experience with PSO has brought us. There's more city to explore, more variation in enemies, more areas to visit, hell, more exploring in general, character creation and engineering has far more depth to it, and so on and so forth.

It's a fitting successor for the game we've loved so much.

Mag and Meira (if indeed I do remember you, hah, if not, still relevant), we should see who all we can bundle together from the old days and all play together. It'd be nice to get SnAPPLE and Breezblok and them back together too http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I had the same problem. But after playing the 360 demo, I got addicted >_>.

I am a big graphics whore.. and the 360 version didn't look bad at all. I really love the art-style of this game. Games don't have to look realistic, to give some nice graphics anyway.

Agreed, having played the japanese PC version, I must say it handled quite well, and combat was very enjoyable. The only thing that really annoys me is how braindead the NPC AI is. You'd seriously be better off fighting alone sometimes, but most of the time there isn't a difference. Obviously not a problem online.

I'm down with the idea. We'll have to start a thread in Player Match-up once we know how many Universes there will be, and arrange a meeting time on the Central Table in Clyez City. Friday night, perhaps?

Okay... I logged on for the first time today, and am sorta familiar with Clyez city, but am still figuring out the details of the game itself, with regards to levelling, controls, etc. I should be able to make it to some kinda meeting on friday http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif.

I use a Radio Shack USB PS2 controller adapter. It works great. Your question about whether the game is worth it is a tough one. IMHO, there is no online game that is a WoW killer.
If you really enjoyed PSO, you will really enjoy PSU. I see PSU as an upgrade os PSO. Switching weapons is easier, there are more places to hang out, and the graphics and animation are better.

Meh, after 2 straight years of WoW, it's luster wore off, and it was revealed to me by flawed design that in fact, the game sucks, and Blizzard's design team lacks creativity of any kind http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif.

I'm confident I'll love PSU at this point http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif.

After 6 months of WoW in as an officer in a 300 member guild, PSU's gameplay, graphics and sound is a relief. I can pick up and drop a game of PSU at a moment's notice. I could never do that with WoW... every time I logged in I spent 30 mins. just dealing with personality and loot issues.
Anyway, the two games are very different and are hard to compare.
