In the manual it says its L1, for the ps2. Thats also the same button to strife. When i am using a handgun i press R1 to get it out and L1 to strife but it is not locking onto the enemies. I have to manually strife left and right to be able to hit the mobs with the gun. Am i doing something wrong? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks.

That's weird mine works fine. Make sure you're close enough to the enemy.

Only melee weapons can lock on.

Yeah I was about to say, I had trouble at first too with the handgun/saber combo. When I got almost within melee range >< it picked them up and let me strafe around while locked on. Using the handgun though...

I don't think locking on was meant for ranged weapons. It's pretty easy to shoot while strafing around already, isn't it?

Yeah, there is a slight auto target with the straff but no full on lock.
I got used to it after a bit.
