earlier today it was brought up that some router problems were causing people to be unable to hear others using the xbox 360 mic. At that time i had no problem, but when i logged on tonight i was having the same trouble. i was told by someone that the mics wont work again till 2morrow. Is this true, or is it my router/firewall settings?

my friend and I used our mics all day from 2pm till right now...

edit: and yes, we both have routers. a dlink and linksys. no crazy settings should be required. just hook up and go.

I can't figure out how to mke my mic work. Are there any options to turn it on in game, do you just talk to people you party with or anyone nearby?

it automatically works when you join/create a game.

Then I must also be having router issues, using a Dlink

Your router's NAT must be 'Open' and firmware must be supported as well:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm

I upgraded firmware on my router and voice chat worked fine.

I just looked and my router isn't supported supposedly by xbox live but no other game has any trouble with it. I get on to PSU sucessfully about a quarter of the time but voice chat doesn't seem to work. I really want to play this game but it looks like I'll be trading it in. Never had so much trouble with a console game in my life...

That would do it.

And you need to be in a PArty for Voice Chat to work.

Set your NAT to Open (I recommend just setting your 360's IP to DMZ Mode through your router).
Also, you can tell if your mic works by the little icon under your name. If there's a big red (/) on it, you can't talk,
but if there's nothing on it (it kind of looks like one of those old fashioned microphones), you can talk.

As FenixStryk suggested, set your XBox to a fixed IP in settings, then put that IP in a DMZ on your router, your routers guide or website can tell you how to do that. Also, I suggest http://www.portforward.com/ as there are some ports that should be open for Live. However, a DMZ should do it, but I had a cheapo router that never worked, despite the DMZ - so I upgraded to a D-Link 4100. Good luck!

Edit: Depending on your router, you may just have to reserve whatever IP it gives your XBox and leave the XBox on auto-detect. I remember now that it wouldn't work if it was set on my XBox, I just left that on auto and reserved the IP on my router.
