after the trial at the start and ethan says that maybe he should go to his room, how do you initiate the story from there?

Oh, that. Talk to your PM, go to the functions or whatever you want to call it, I forget. Ask him about Photon Sealing and The Maiden, then leave your room. At that point I believe you go talk to Headmaster Nav at the GUARDIAN's hq on the 4th floor. It goes a little something like that. When you leave your room Lumia talks to you. Then just take the elevator to 4th floor, enter go up the stairs/whatever there to the GUARDIAN's place and a then sit back and watch the movie.
