The shimmering stars are, basically, your item finding bonuses. The better the star type, the more likely you will find more items.

The stars are what your luck is for the day. The shinier, the more luck. And yes, any keyboard will work for the PS2. I personally bought a $20 keyboard from BestBuy.

Gamestop has a tiny little number for 9.99. It's tiny, though. About the size of the slimline PS2. Maybe smaller.
