View Full Version : Relations between the first phantasy star.....and PSU

i recently dled the first PS game and was playing it on a sega genesis emulator.....and realized that sega is still using some of the same stuff from the very first game. for example....in the first PS, there are three main planets (i forget their names), one is of green, another is of ice, and the other of sand and desert.....doesnt tht kinda remind you of parum (green), neudaiz (ice) and moatoob? (desert) also another thing i noticed....for anyone tht played PSO, remember the mission where your client wanted you to find them something sweet? so you had to go down to Caves 3, and pick up a cake for her, then give it to her....well, oddly enough, theres a shortcake shop located deep inside a dungeon in the first PS. i just thought it was cool how they take stuff from their older games, and apply it to the newer ones.

Theres a lot of throwbacks in Phantasy Star, but then again, there tend to be in a lot of Japanese RPGs. I remember a while ago seeing a big list of shared connections, but I can't remember the link for it.

But yeh, perhaps it'll give an excuse to newer players to go back and play the older games. They're classic and still great games today.

Yes, in the first Phantasy Star series, the three planets were Parma, Dezolis and Motavia. In fact, there was three planets mentioned loosely in PSO... the seal MOOT DITTS POMME (or something like that http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif). Parma was also home to humans/casts, Dezolis to the green-skinned, religious and insular Dezolians, and Motavia to the blue haired bird-like, industrial Beast people (as potrayed fully in PS IV). So for old school fans there is a lot that is intact. Even in story mode, captain Tyler and the Landeel are from previous PS games too! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif The Crea weapons could almost be compared to the "Nei" weapons, too.

I also keep the spirit of the previous games alive by naming my PMs after PSIV special moves. My GH-450 fire user is Flaeli (fire magic of Rune), another armor PM is Tandle (for her shock guns), and a ranged one I'm working on is Hijammer (Wren's move to disable fellow bots).

yea, it also seems like games from the 80sish or early 90s are SO MUCH HARDER than todays games. probably because back then, there were tons of puzzles to solve in video games. i.e. the billion dungeons in PS. so much advil.......so many headaches......ow

Next, go through all the Star Wars correlations with Phantasy Star, especially that first one. From the 3 planets to Jawas. The main reason I loved PS as a kid.

Yep. I think in the first game there was even an enemy that looked like a Jawa! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif Motavians were like blue furred versions of them...

Let's also not forget that by looking at my sig, you can see that even SEED is not original. The name was not only Rika's creator computer in the Valley of Life, but also links up with Dark Falz/Phallus the "seed" of evil planted in everyone.

wow! youve been doing your work! lol, the first PS game ive ever played was PSO on GC, and i started playing it about....5 years ago?? its still the best game ive ever played to this day, something is very special about that game to me. so since ive only played PSO,PSCR epi 3, and PSU, i wanted to play more and learn more about PS in general, so i dl the genesis emulator and im beating the games now one by one, so far tho, the first PS is extremely awesome (but hard though because of the countless number of dungeons) but, its SO much easier now thanks to Xaos127 for the guide. w/o it, id never finish it, thanks again http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Good to see you're going back. I've been playing PS games since it was new on the Sega Master System in like '85. This is not "homework" for me, it is nostalgia! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

And just a word of warning, if you haven't played PSII yet. Prepare for very hard dungeons. I still think that one is among the most difficult games I've ever played in my 20+ years.

Speaking of similarities, I recently noticed that Lapuchas in Moatoob are like scaled down, cute versions of the classic Dezolian owl sprites.

does it still follow the story with Alis? or does it move on to a different character?

Alis is not really mentioned much in PSII. So don't hold your breath much for it. The hero is a guy named Rolf, along with his biomonster companion Nei, in charge of fixing some system malfunctions/monster outbreak that are occuring, which then turns into a whole conspiracy in regards to Mother Brain's dark origins...

You do get to visit a lot of planet locations and it does have a customizable party from available allies. For it's day it was really nifty.

Oh yeah and just like American Express, never leave home without a clone! Teleport on!

This is kind of the very reason why I put the Phantasy Star Wiki up... and you can check out what's available through the link in my sig. I don't have a whole lot of content up right now because I've been busy with school, work, and of course - PSU. I also don't have any staff members to help out - and there is a lot of information to go through. The PSI & II pages are more-or-less complete - and at least I have the full scripts up for PSIV as well as mostly for PSIII and some of PSO. I am looking for assistance tho, if you're interested.

That's actually an even more obscure reference. In PSIV, Rika's Claws didn't look anything like the PSO weapon "Rika's Claw". That weapon is modeled after offical artwork and promotional materials (like live-action commercials) which featured that claw.

Ah, well, a thousand years does pass between each game in the series. One can usually write off translation errors as the Palman language simply modifying over the years.

Well it certanly has its charm don`t you think?
But funniest thing was when Noah was called a girl:)

If you want to get to know the series I would start with PSIV it can be played without having played any of the previous games, as well as It kinda tells mutch of the story behind the older games and at the end it really makes the PS serie shine:)
Many people would probably tell you to avoid nr3, becouse it`s kind of different, but make up your own opinion.

The relation between Rolf and Alis is slightly more than that.

*spoilers for those who haven't played so OMG DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU LOOK AND RUIN IT FOR YOURSELF*

Not only does Rolf dream about her fighting Dark Force, but when he meets the last esper in the Algo solar system, Lutz, it is revealed that he is the last living descendent of Alis.

So yeah, there are slight mentions of Alis in the game, but she doesn't take a major role in it like the first Phantasy Star. (At least that's what I remember...its been years since I played the games. And its true, the dungeons are a bitch. )

Question still is how does both pso and psu actually fit in the ps lore.

(btw rappies made their 1st apperance in ps3, there was even an android rappy)

*ZOMg Spoilers best stop reading now if your getting into the 1st 4 ps games*

There are a few things that been bothering me on how pso and psu fit into the ps lore, we do get some ideas from ps2, was the plamerians colonists from the sol system? about the end of the game you discover whos behind the mother brain. or where the humans from the sol system invaders? was it the humans from the sol system that started the newman project, did they make the androids that attacked you after downing nei first? or was all this done in palma?
In ps3 the palmerians were all flying in big ships containing parts of their world, are these the same ships that were finding a new home?

This is what comes up in my poor head as to how pso and psu fit in the ps lore. gonna play the ole games again and figure out more.

*end spoiler*

The De Ragan tune is a remixed version of the PSO Dragon tune "Growl from the Depths of the Earth." "Growl from the Digital Haze," PSO's Gol Dragon tune, is also a remix of this same thing.
I think.

PSIV's battle system gets really fun when you start setting up macros for combo attacks. and i loved the comic panel cutins during story sequences. As for the remixed music, its the same two tunes, The Air castle music plays in the VR temple.

I love the artwork that PS games had. They were so artistic while showing what was happening realistically. One of my regrets with newer games is that it no longer has art like this, and instead has live action scenes.

Also, I vote Nei as best female videogame character.

It just blows me away that someone would example Chrono Trigger as a more traditional RPG. The thing that made Chrono Trigger so awesome when it came out is it was so different from console RPGs to that point. Phantasy Star, was, and is great, with many very cool ideas to break the norm monotony of the time, with just Dragon Warrior and Ultima to choose from. However, it's one of the games that helped write the book of what a console RPG was supposed to be.

Besides the quests and visuals there is music too.
Listen to the shops, specific places, and sound effects. They share a lot of tunes and sounds in PSO and PSU. The music for the Temple and Space simulators for PSO EPII are remixes from the original Phatasy Star series.

It was the Manga/Comic Book effect...
The Phantasy Star design was originally a late 80's anime style, but you won't see that anymore now with current times.

I believe it's fairly obvious he was speaking of console RPGs specifically, not entertainment as a whole.
